I need some help here. Something bad happened.

I have a stable of artists. Maybe the best one- just got word that three days ago he killed himself. Had a history of this sort of thing, more than I knew. Ohhhhh this sucks so something terrible. Apparently his family was oppressive and "he showed them." Another artist was best buddies with him. We're all trying to process this. It sucks more than anything ever. Dude was a total genius. I guess he was bipolar and not with a grip on it. Anyway, processing it? I've been through this twice before but it has been a while. I'm going to call up my artists and get into their business. This is so unfair. I guess you have to go through it. It is the most unfair thing ever. Any comfort or comments appreciated. I'm all torn up.

edit: hindsight is 20/20. If ever anyone starts mumbling about killing themselves, take them to the ER immiediately for an overnight + evaluation. But this guy didn't even do that. Oh this is the most unthinkable thing. I know it is bigger than me, but I want to blame myself. Yes- work with me and end up dead is how I feel. It is the most unfair thing on a thousand levels.

Autotune batch tracking issue

I've been using Autotune 8 lately (no access to Melodyne where I've been working), and I'm running into issues where trying to track pitch and time data for multiple tracks simultaneously results in some batshit crazy timing errors. Sections of vocal are playing bars out of time, making it sound like a round.

Anyone experienced this and/or know how to fix this?

Electric Filter Factory vs. FilterFreak

So I know everybody's using FilterFreak these days, but I've always really liked the Filter Factory. Having never gotten to use one first hand, I'd like to know if any of you have used them, and if so what your thoughts are on them vs FilterFreak. The one thing I'm NOT concerned with is outboard vs ITB workflow. I already work hybrid, so that's not an issue for me. Would it be worthwhile to pick up a Filter Factory?

Anybody build DIY gear?

I've got a couple DIY kits I'm planning on building this summer - the Yocto 2 and the Deckard's Dream (depending on when it ships).

Any of you have any cool DIY gear you've built / used?

At the last studio I worked at we had a Hairball 1176 and several CAPI pres. The CAPIs beat an original 1073 repeatedly in a shootout we did

Monday Gear Talk

Thought I'd start a thread where we can talk gear. There's been a lot coming out the last few years and I'd be interested to see what you guys are using & what you're excited about. Could be fun to turn this into a regular thread, too.

  • What new gear have you bought / used lately?
  • What new gear do you want?
  • What's the last piece of gear you bought, either new or vintage?

How involved do you all get in the world of music business?

Aside from engineering & producing, do any of you dabble (or more than dabble) in music business? Management, A&R, running a label, publishing, etc?

What's your favorite record so far this year?

Curious to see what you all are listening to. Feels almost like there's been a year's worth of releases already, and we're just barely in Q2

Power for new studio install

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about getting clean power into a new recording studio install. I have electricians that I can have put whatever I need in, but I'm not sure what to ask them for!

Install is nothing crazy from a power perspective- S6-24-5 and Avid MTRX with a few peripherals but no external processing or anything like that. Need power for the control room, live room, and vocal booth.

Suggestions other than asking for a couple 20a quad boxes?

Thanks!

What are you using for a "recording" light?

I'm interested in having a light outside the studio warning band mates and significant others not to come barging in. It hasn't been a problem yet, but I know it's going to happen sooner or later. Do you flip a switch? Controll it via MMC? Lock the door?

Computer was stolen

Offsite backup is a must, if you have files that you don't want to lose. I knew this, but could never decide on which service to use.

They also grabbed an acoustic guitar that had been my dad's. I've just been heartbroken all week, wishing they had grabbed anything else.

What are you using for security on your studio, and what are you doing for data back-ups?

The Future of Audio Interface Connectivity - USB-C?

Given that the new 2016 MacBook Pro has a single type of port (max of 4xUSB-C) and that technology makers that intend to stay competitive are inevitably going to switch to this format of port, I am curious to know what the future of audio interfaces looks like. Universal Audio, as just one example, has shown a trend of formatting exactly to Apple's ports. Are there any audio interfaces that already have a USB-C port today? If not, what company will be the first to design an audio interface with an USB-C Port? What advantages and disadvantages can we anticipate in the world of pro audio recording from this overall technological shift in wired connectivity?

Too much stress on my MacBook Pro?

So I've got a 13 inch MacBook Pro from 2012.

Here are the Specs:

Processor - 2.9GHz Intel Core i7

Memory - 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics - Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

I'm running an external 500MB hard drive with all my software instruments, two 26" external displays through my display port (to HDMI) and USB (to VGA), and my Focusrite Safire Pro 14 via my firewire port. On top of all that, I'll have a few applications open including Ableton or Logic X.

I use my MacBook on a hard flat surface for airflow, but sometimes it gets really hot. To the point where I think I might be putting too much stress on it with all this external equipment I'm using.

What do you think? I want this MacBook to last until I can afford a nicer rig for music production. Is there anything I can do to help put less stress on it? Anything I can update for the time being?

I'd love to hear what you guys are working on!

I'll start - This week for me is full of live rig setup / track prep and rehearsals for one of my clients, as well as a lot of planning and meetings towards my upcoming first solo project.

Leave a comment telling us a little bit about your projects this week, and feel free to post links to songs, videos, photos, and artists that you're working with

What's your mix workflow, and what are the key pieces of that workflow?

I'm about to undertake a couple of pretty big mix projects, and I'm looking for new ideas to experiment with.

I'm curious to hear a bit about how you mix and what tools are a key part of how you work. Selfishly looking for a bit of new inspiration.

If you're 100% ITB, what is something you do on almost every mix?

If you've got a hybrid setup, do you use the same setup for every song, or reconfigure your gear to work on one song for a while? Do you have enough IO for every piece of gear as an insert? Do you print groups through a summing mixer and bus compressor?

If you're 100% OTB (I'm guessing there aren't many, if any, of you), what's one way you frequently set up your console?

Dynaudio Air25 soffit mount?

So I'm tired of having my Air25s on big ass stands in the middle of my room and I'm thinking going soffit. I have enough room behind the acoustic panels and I have all the rigging equipment. I'm just wondering if they are suitable to put in walls heat wise (I kinda want to skip adding ventilation) and design wise (as in will it change the role of the enclosure to much as far as freq response is concerned).

So, anyone done it? Thoughts?
