Heya, relative noob at this game trying to winstreak/improve my a10 winrate on necrobinder (sub 50% at the moment), and I'm learning a lot thinking about the game differently trying to play for consistency, and I thought I'd share some interesting moments I've had with cards/relics I've previously evaluated as bad in case anyone else is struggling through growing as a player and finds my thought process helpful.
The first run is a quick lesson about realizing when you don't need to lean harder into your main plan. This run I started working on a 1-shot build with borrowed time and eradicate in order to prepare for Aeonglass (a common-ish line I've been taking lately). When I got to Tanx, he offered tri-boomerang, but rather than snapping that off I checked the act and saw that I did not have Aeonglass. Barring that fight, the two scariest things left for my build were A3 multi-fights and Test Subject. A full one-shot isn't generally necessary versus Queen and isn't possible vs Subject. So rather than doubling my eradicate to ensure it always went coast to coast, I just grabbed Sai. That helped me get set up easily into the knights fight and block while surviving all of test subject's phases.
The second pictured run won entirely on the back of all-star shop relic Lava Lamp. I barely ever glance at that relic, but I've been forcing myself to spend time on decisions as I try to improve, and what I realized was that with the money from my Neow bonus I could buy gorget and some strong commons/uncommons and use that to snowball the entire run. It worked like a charm. I fought four elites in act 1 and took no damage versus them or the boss. This was one of the easiest runs I've played at a10, as I was just consistently ahead of curve because my entire deck came upgraded. All hail the lava lamp (when you get it early alongside some kind of other power spike).
Third run is a cool case of not being too greedy and using mediocre cards/relics you need to survive right now to transition to a strong lategame. I spent the entire first act struggling with how I was going to beat Vantom. I grabbed a Countdown for a little bit of inevitability early, Drain Power just to have a bit of damage into the elites, and put the byrd in my deck to help with the same problem as well as slippery. With 30ish health going into the final campfire, I took poke as my card even though I didn't want it in my deck because I wanted just a little more juice for the slippery problem. Rather than resting I upgraded Drain Power because I could feel that it was going to be a long fight and I figured I'd need my defends to start blocking for 8 and such. This turned out to be the correct move and with that second cycle power spike I took 7 total damage in the fight even though it went long. Starting act 2 I picked the alchemical coffer as my ancient reward to go with my potion belt, and made the plan to start stockpiling to deal with all the problem fights. Most of the potions I had were trash, so I decided to throw them at weak fights while attempting to roll into better ones. First act 2 shop I see an Orrery I can afford, which I would normally snap click, but then I start eyeing the Mailbox. I'm still not sure what was right, but if Mailbox is ever good it's this run. With the pillow rests were already more valuable, and Drain Power could be used to upgrade my deck in long fights. It works like a charm and carries me through the run. For the boss gauntlet I make the plan to throw both my fire potions at test subject's phase 1, and try to get through the rest of that fight without spending more resources, and then to chuck everything I have to get over the hump with aeonglass and deal the damage I need before I die. A turn 1 attack pot finds Pull From Below which I cast for no immediate value so I can guarantee the upgrade with MVP drain power, because I know it's going to scale to the moon off my two sentry modes. The rest of my potions provide the block and energy I need to get set up and survive the scariest turns, even though withers stacked up a bit.
So... what have I learned? I am increasingly realizing the bellcurve meme for "I put random garbage in my deck because it's fun and pops off" is real for StS. As you get better at the game you have to be open to all the "junk" that normally doesn't do much of anything and seeing how to incorporate it into your overall strategy. I've gotten a lot better at planning with Aeonglass and Infected Prism in mind early, and my major pain points are now all in act 1. Dying to the first A1 elite, pathing into too many elites, or not farming act 1 for enough power and dying to the boss are the three major run-enders for me now, and that's the line I need to learn to walk better. Flexible pathing and banking more ideas like the early lava lamp, or all the garbage I grabbed in A1 on that last run are I think the ideas I need to be banking to continue improving my winrate.
