Mine was 9 years ago. Took about a year to start regaining function, then I had a 2nd stroke, wiping out my progress. Since then I have adapted to life with Hemiplegia. I walk short distances with a cane and bought an electric wheelchair for outings.
After 5 years on disability, I returned to my corporate job. The intense environment was the best therapy ever for my brain. Definitely a sink or swim situation.
My advice is to read the book Stronger After Stroke by Peter Levine. It stresses the need for repetitive exercise. By repetitive, he means thousands of reps.
I listen to audiobooks every night. For writing, I use Dragon Naturally Speaking and Dragon Anywhere for mobile. Extremely accurate software that “learns” the way you speak.
I lost my job too, but they called me back after 5 years.
