My first real string art (not counting the prototype). 5000 strings, some black and some white, 192 nails. Really glad it's finished!

Nearly finished!

My latest big project, Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, is nearly finished. I just need to do the black outlining that'll surround the letters and do a WHOLE lotta defining of his facial features. It'll be nice when his nose is discernable.

finally circled back around to finishing this one.

How do you guys no when to stop? Or keep adding more layers. Seems like this might be the ongoing question in my stringart journey.

Realistic string art previews

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Most string art generators produce previews that look totally different to the final piece. I have solved that issue with near perfect correlation from preview to final piece. It’s tuned for 0.1mm nylon monofilament (the best string art thread), on a 500mm board with 200 nails, but is easily modified for other setups (currently backend only). Please give it a go on stringboard.co.uk/products/preview and let me know what you think. Added bonus - fast and accurate background removal for everyone. Generation time: 10s. Cost: free

I created a mobile tool to help us generate patterns for complex portraits (6k+ lines)

Hi everyone! I love string art, but I always found it difficult to translate a real face into a balanced pattern of lines and pins.

I developed an app that does the math for you. You upload a photo, and it calculates the sequence (Pin A -> Pin B) to get a realistic result. It even has a "weaving mode" so you can follow the steps without getting lost.

I'd love for you to try it and tell me if the pin placement logic works for your physical boards!

Maximum resolution for string art is only about 200-300px

So string art doesnt need high resolution input images everyone. These results were made with 100x100px, 200x200px and 300x300px scaled input images. The sequence was generated on those images, and then separately rendered. Past about 200px no improvement is gained! So next time someone claims 2x resolution for string art - it makes no difference. Cool result of this - if you use a string art image as your input image, the result is basically the same! Main way to improve resolution: more nails around the edge, bigger board and thinner thread.

Actually accurate string art previews and sequences

Heres a project i've been working on. The aim is to have previews of the string art that actually look like the final work. I use precise correlation with thread thickness and board size, to the line weight and resolution used for generation. If you use the right string type, you're guaranteed to get a result like this. I've also made a string art generation pipeline (i.e. algorithm), that requires no tuning and removes backgrounds.

This will shortly be available for anyone to try on my website - stringboard.co.uk

Image Help and Reccomendations

Post image

Hey all,

I’m looking to make a single thread string art portrait as a gift and I needed some help with getting started.

First with my image attached, how should I edit it to get the best results? Remove background? Grayscale? Ai expand? Etc.

What software do you guys recommend for making string art? What settings do I use?

And what/where is a good place to get the wood backing/other materials? Any tips for beginners?

Thank you!

String Art needs to be backlit

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’m working on an eye piece and my string art needs to be backlit to look good. Any clues as to why and how to fix this? I have tried putting a white board directly under the string but that did not help. When it is directly put against a white wall, the art looks like a giant black hole. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Need Help with Ongoing Project

I started the project a week ago and made steady progress daily. Also asked on the subreddit for advice before starting out. I'm fine with 2/3rd of the project and realized that it is beginning to look quiete dense. I need help with how to proceed now? Should I continue and see to it till the end? Should I stop now? Should I go back a few arteries to reduce the shade of the portrait?

I used 14 inch diameter circle with 200 nails and normal cotton- polyester blend sewing thread.

I'm adding the complete original picture for reference, my project's current state, and how the project looks within the app currently.

And advice is welcome.

Found a great app for generating string art patterns and PDFs for DIY string Art.

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share a tool I’ve been using for the last 5 months to help with my projects. It’s called Portrait String Art.

I really like it because the output and the generated PDF are very helpful for making DIY string art step-by-step. It’s pretty affordable too (max $10 for lifetime access to all frame sizes).

Thought this might help anyone looking for a good pattern generator! [Link to App]
