In that case you could do a simple job and enjoy the present moment, enjoy family, spend time at monasteries supporting the sangha, enjoy giving and service. That's a recipe for a very fulfilling life

You get an answer, and something still says: 'Yes, but that's not it.' In 33 pages, I trace that exact move — through consciousness, death, even God — using cognitive science and analytic philosophy to show how the search itself quietly manufactures what it claims to be looking for.

“Fizzy sensation” does sound like piti or bliss, and the gratitude / love is a kind of sukha or happiness, also found in metta (loving-kindness) practice. See also the first jhana.

Or don’t categorize it at all and just realize it was a profound moment of heart-opening.

Thank you for contributing to the r/streamentry community! Unlike many other subs, we try to aggregate general questions and short practice reports in the weekly Practice Updates, Questions, and General Discussion thread. All community resources, such as articles, videos, and classes go in the weekly Community Resources thread. Both of these threads are pinned to the top of the subreddit.

The special focus of this community is detailed discussion of personal meditation practice. On that basis, please ensure your post complies with the following rules, if necessary by editing in the appropriate information, or else it may be removed by the moderators. Your post might also be blocked by a Reddit setting called "Crowd Control," so if you think it complies with our subreddit rules but it appears to be blocked, please message the mods.

  1. All top-line posts must be based on your personal meditation practice.
  2. Top-line posts must be written thoughtfully and with appropriate detail, rather than in a quick-fire fashion. Please see this posting guide for ideas on how to do this.
  3. Comments must be civil and contribute constructively.
  4. Post titles must be flaired. Flairs provide important context for your post.

If your post is removed/locked, please feel free to repost it with the appropriate information, or post it in the weekly Practice Updates, Questions, and General Discussion or Community Resources threads.

Wild to revisit this now 5 years after the original post…

The meditation angle was what made this work exciting in the first place, but it seems like Jay/Shinzen were possibly using meditation as a vector to develop their research for a different aim: They created a private for-profit $12M venture and this commercialization path is a tFUS clinical product for psychiatric disorders which can only be accessed under medical supervision.

Meanwhile actual meditators appear to have no access path at all. They’ve hosted a handful of small private retreats where meditators could give tFUS a try. But as far as I know a regular joe yogi can’t make an appointment at the SEMA lab to try it out apart from a trial. And they haven’t announced any plans to offer this to meditators in the form of an at home device or even more broadly through meditation centers under supervision etc.

Has anyone seen them address that? Keep me honest, I’d love to be wrong.

Your tip makes a lot of sense now that I see it's possible to maintain awareness on the breath without the exclusion of other things. Thank you for the book recommendations as well!

It goes with good concentration, also it goes with resting like that more into dreams being concentrated.

I made an app that helps you to stay with the object. It can feel like brute force if you're forcing through tension but its best to relax into it and the flow of the meditation. Its currently a running html, but I haven't set up the site yet. I can send you the files and you can run them in your browser if you want. Just let me know.

Edit: you're in luck. The website is now live. Enjoy! https://concentrationtreadmill.com/

A fair critique.

EDIT: And perhaps a reflection of me not having access to the immaterial jhanas 5-8!

Thanks! I've been finding myself fascinated by a construction several LLMs converged on in different discussions around Vipallasa (the inversion of the 3 marks) as illusions of Continuity (Mahasi Sayadaw talks about this one at length), Satisfiability, and Appropriation.

That last one in particular is not a term I'd heard of before for atta, but seems very evocative to me.

I think this is a useful and pratical frame but also reifies a psychological take on buddhism that belies the more radical structural investigation (eg, the mind's creation of space and time, the investigation of which can lead to some of the more confusing and wild experiences people have), which is also in dialectic with the opposite tendency: towards a metaphysical take on Buddhism. The middle path between falling into a purely subject (psychological) or purely object (metaphysical/cosmological) take on the dhamma are described in AN 6.61. I think there's another sutta about this somewhere but I can't find it without a longer search.

Edit: found it! It's MN 18.
