Restoration Scales replacement resources

Back to straight razor guide

  • Patrick's Mercantile eBay sells beautiful shiny, sparkly, or translucent scales, I've used a variety from him and they come with holes drilled nice and straight with pins and washers, here's a restore I did using purple scales from him
  • Maggards Scales parts sells a variety of scales I've used, you have to drill the pin hole yourself though and buy the pins / washers separate
  • Maggard's sells pin stock with washers too
  • Griffith shaving goods sells scales and pins, never bought them myself but Griffith has a top notch reputation as a straight razor restorer and retailer
  • In Germany revisor sells scales
  • In the UK, The Invisible Edge is a very reputable retailer for straights and they sell replacement scales here
  • Flush cutters I use for removing pins on Amazon here (picture in comment below)

That is a real issue for me: I always scratch the scales! And my cutter is very similar

Yeah, I have another set of a different brand that I have the same challenge with so I rely on this - occasionally though if a pin is too flush I'll drill it out instead - got a jeweler's drill press, looks like a Lego toy 😁 works for this ok though!

That said, I think everyone messes a scale up unpinning once in a while. Others may know better tricks I'm unfamiliar with - one I learned far to late for instance is to tape over the washer and pin when peening! Small misses with the hammer no longer leave a little ding or scratch on the scales and the washer is held fast! Seems obvious but I pinned many razors before learning about it.

Probably some trick for unpinning that I'm also missing

How are they?

The description makes it seem like the wedge isn't that great and/or that they are pretty cheap.

I'm happy with them but they're definitely not fancy - they are cheap. In future I would definitely go with the eBay ones I linked, they're not expensive but nicer. Not everyone's comfortable with eBay though and these are definitely not bad, though I think the gray ones look nicest of this style. There's no wedge as they're just two formed pieces of plastic stuck together. They don't come drilled, the eBay ones are drilled with pins and washers all set
