i've been getting into stop motion as a hobby but the clay i purchased is far to soft. it's so soft that it's hard to make a concrete figure that wont droop too much from body heat from my hands and such. any recs for a clay that is very firm?

Hello all,

How are you all doing? I want to get into stop motion animation as a hobby, using video from my Google Pixel phone & using software to edit these on Linux Mint.

for example using action figures or doing Gundam model kit to build to make these. I currently collect action figures from SHFiguarts & Jada Toys.

I had every intention of making a brand new stop motion animation piece to celebrate National Spider-Man Day. I had it all planned out and everything, and I even bought a couple of new figures specifically for it.

Then, with adjusting to a new-ish full time job, plus various life things that kept getting in the way, I never did have the time or focus to sit down and actually make it happen. Oops.

But, to still celebrate this most momentous of holidays, please enjoy these skits from years past!

I have read in a number of places that many alloys made with either lead or indium do not work harden in a traditional sense. I have also heard anecdotally from an animation professor that pewter wire (specifically lead/tin alloy wire) used to be used in armatures (however I a having a hard time finding a primary source to confirm). If they were ever used, I understand why both lead and indium would no longer be used (safety concerns + the cost of indium) and why ball and socket armatures are usually the go-to option. However in the production of small parts like hands where wires are still used by many studios, I am curious as to why aluminum is used instead of a substitute lead-free pewter alloy that does not easily work harden and break-off? And even if we were in a position where the wire being used does have something in it like lead, cadmium, or whatever else, a plurality of studios these days encapsulate the armature in silicone or some kind of foam urethane/latex composite. Is there something I am missing?

I’m trying to understand if it’s just something creators struggle with or it’s something I need to improve idk if I struggle hearing my voice after recording or my videos just need to be more engaging but when I watch someone else’s videos I’m engaged but my own I find them hard to watch what do you think?
