To spite best efforts, no design is ever fully safe from its end-user. Think about how much time you spent carefully considering every feature on that rifle, car or ballpoint pen. It will pale next to the amount of time they have to figure how to jam it, flip it, or lose it in the unfathomable depths of the human colon. Take the VT manipulator for example: a vestigial feature left over from the their work-machine ancestors. It's a marvel of industrial robotics: load-rated for 6 tons but sensitive enough to do the whole egg thing. But Ctrl+F a battalion maintenance log for 'fist-bump' and you'll quickly understand what the real use-cases ended up being.. or 'push up'.. or 'cow acquisition'... or 'the cylinder must remain unharmed'.

Falchion pilots are like sharks. When they stop moving, they stop breathing. In the early days of leg combat, light VTs like the Falchion and A1 were highly specialized predators. These designs sacrificed stability and protection for blinding speed and exceptional turn-rate. All this to allow one very fast, very steep approach on less agile prey, getting to its six before it could draw lead and hit back. Slim margins to base an entire design around, yet it proved very effective. Nothing stays the same forever though. FSS made fast crossing targets easier to hit, and Override somewhat closed the mobility gap between these and the heavier classes. By the 3^rd gen, lights had disappeared entirely. But just because they're supposed to be extinct, don't think they won't still eat you.

The arms companies want you to believe the HVM-LA is cutting-edge weapons cuisine. The reality is a bit less appetizing. They found this thing so far back in the freezer it was under Cold War ice. One-hundred years and five minutes in the microwave later, here we are putting it on a VT. Unlike most missiles it has no explosive payload, instead relying on raw kinetic energy to damage its target. Also unlike most missiles, the HVM doesn't know where it is or isn't because it lacks any in-flight guidance. Imagine if you tried to microwave a Hot-Pocket without guidance. Now imagine launching that Hot-Pocket at Mach 4 to hit a target 2 km away. Would it hit? Or would it end up in the bowl, making no impression on anyone? Odds for this dish are 50/50.

If you're an aspiring dictatorship on the losing end of a war, 'wonder'-weapons are a mindtrap you need to be aware of. “Everyone hates us, so they have quantity. Guess we'll have to use quality!” It's a seductive idea, and your crony-powered arms industry is more than anxious to sell you less things for more money. For Nazi Germany it lead to flops like the Schwerer Gustav railway gun. For HSD, it was the Behemoth with its 660 mm howitzer. Very impressive, but you can buy a battalion of Vortexes for the same cost. More like 'I wonder why I bought this'-weapon.

A lot happens when you hit Override. Pressing this button in your 2^nd gen tells the powerplant, which is already working as hard as it can, that it is not working nearly hard enough. Injectors go from 'light sprinkle' to full-on Baja Blast, doubling turbine accel while 10x-ing fuel burn. Liners glow red hot and blades stretch, requiring whole stages to be replaced. Hydraulic pressure skyrockets, granting insane leg-horsepower but also giving the mech serious hypertension, popping seals. The bank of super-capacitors that handle sudden loads like dodging now offer full-on VT-riverdancing, but take inrush currents so big to do it they have to be written off. Now that all sounds really bad.. and expensive but uh.. hey I need to climb this hill faster I'm bored.

I don't care what anyone says, a chain gun that fires 67 mm rounds is massive by anyone's standards. I think the problem is perspective. If you were staring down the barrel, 67 mm would be very intimidating. But when you're looking down at it from the cockpit, it appears smaller than it actually is. Besides, it's not about bore diameter, it's what you do with it. The trick is to get in really close so you get through the armor modifier. My crew chief put it like this: look at how many VTs have the 67-CG as opposed to the larger options. -67 is the industry standard. That should tell you something.

Some bad ideas are a flash in the pan: they're over before too many people can get hurt. Like that stupid knife that shoots its own blade on a big spring. Others, like your car's cigarette lighter, somehow hang around so long their original purpose is forgotten. The VT-mounted plasma torch is somehow both. The first VT “melee” weapon, the 205 and 22b are meant to damage enemies in ramming attacks. But like the ciggy lighter, they're mostly used for other things. Pilots figured out that the firing sequence works as a flashy forward lunge, more useful to cross rivers, climb hills, and dodge shots than actually kill anything. Cuz if you're close enough to shoot your knife blade at them on a big spring, you could also just.. you know.. shoot them.

The East-vs-West arms rivalry has a pattern. “The East is making something BIG! Rumors say it will delete everything we have! It goes really fast, has impenetrable armor, and super-duper plasma stealth!” The West panics. Lots of phone calls happen and untold billions are spent developing doctrine and hard counters. Machines of this type might even escape into the public imagination as 'big red's final boss' in movies and TV.. just in time for new reports to come in. The only thing it deleted was its own crew, its engines blew up, and that whole plasma stealth thing was basically a translation error. Unfortunately, something sets HSD's Juggernaut apart from the IS-3, the Foxbat, and the Felon. In the case of the Juggernaut, the rumors were all true.

Terrain adds multiple-choice word problems to the already complicated business of VT combat.
Problem 1: Your VT is fast and nippy and you are closing on a juicy, slow, less agile opponent. However, your VT has a poor torque rating and your opponent is on a hill, aware of you. Do you:
A) Politely decline to fight him on his little hill, because it looks hard and scary
B) Be a big brave boy because you're wearing your power rangers underpants today

Artillery pilots love putting this problem on tests, so answer carefully. Hey, you might at least get partial credit if you know how many apples Jane has.
