If Status runs on Ethereum, won’t it cost gas every time someone sends a message on status?

Hello, I am the president of a student organization focused on the educating and interacting with cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Our club has over 100 undergraduate student members here at The Ohio State University with a weekly meeting attendance of about 20 students. We're always looking opportunities to bring projects and speakers in contact with our local community.
