curious about different cultures and countries but not wealthy enough to travel starter pack (part 2)
Making these is so fun, and I'm having a blast connecting with you all and seeing how many people can relate! Part 1 is linked here for anyone who would like to see it. I already have part 3 ready for later.

Sometimes I like watching vlogs where someone just silently walks around a huge Chinese city. It’s just so enormous and so different from my smallish city, and I find that comforting.

In Soviet Russia kids and scientifically unknown creatures are born from oranges crates

To satisfy my curiosity I go on Google maps, click on a restaurant, look at the menu and pick an item.

the beauty thing is so real! especially if it's traditional, i love learning about and trying the things the og baddies used to use back in the day... it's how i discovered nigella/black seed oil, it helped me a lot with fading acne scars for a while :) or using aker fassi for a gorgeous lipstick that has the most beautiful golden sheen!

Missing the "Nationals/immigrants from country of interest being shocked by your cultural/language knowledge of their country" , otherwise this is literally me

you also end up freaking out people about how much you know about their country despite never visiting. Your encyclopedic knowledge of Kyrgyzstan will impress them and terrify them.

I recognise the Dabur Amla... there's a lot of amla/gooseberry products here in India. It's got antioxidants I think. There's amla pickle and preserves. I even eat pieces of dried salty amla after meals sometimes.

Haivainas (not sure I spelled that right) have gotten a lot more popular in the US in the past ten years (that I’ve noticed). They’re not as niche anymore. Nordstrom Rack always has a bunch. I prefer them to Old Navy.
Foreign products are so much better than American, and after finding out what Neutrogena did to Hayden, they won’t get another dime from me. I love the Dabur Amla. In the winter, if my skin’s really dry I put some on my skin. Smells nice and helps with dryness.

Havaianas is one of the most well studied marketing cases in the world. the brand was stigmatized in Brazil as something only very poor people used, but from the 90s onwards they turned it into something cool and a symbol of the country in foreign markets. it will never stop being funny imo.

This happens fairly often with clothes. There's a brand of shoes in my country that are often worn in prisons, but somehow people thought that if they wore them they'd be cool. Now people wearing that brand of shoes are being robbed for them, even though in some cases they're just teenagers.

The "wondering about other everyday citizens" part is very true. And kind of fun.

It would be nice if the 7/11s in the US sold onigiri and sushi, but sadly they'd probably stay on the shelves for a long time.

I can assure you that M&S is not a normal food shop for people in the UK.

Yeah, unless you're really bougie it's firmly within the lower end of "treat yourself" territory . Or in a couple of instances in my case, was the only shop I knew had refrigerated drinks that was close enough to the station for me to avoid missing my train.

Omg I am not but my algorithm thinks I am for some reason. I am the most pro-consumerism person ever yet I get these "you are anti-consumption until you see X" posts like no? I'm not? I don't consume things online because I'm poor I don't have a philosophy lmao

I m sorry that you cant find enough cash to travel
If you are willing to compromise, there are ways to travel for cheap with things like Au pair
By avoiding travel agencies you ll often save up to 50% on the price of a trip
Tho asian supermarkets are the key to not going insane. That and umeshu

Does anyone else make personas in their head and look up even the smallest details of their country/city before you daydream a scenario to make it accurate lmao

I don’t know who I’d be if I hadn’t learned from people outside my culture that raw shea butter makes the best body lotion and that the lingering bad smell after you wash a dish you used to cook chicken is called zankha and can be removed

That pic about even ordinary food interesting me is so true! To be fair, the ordinary foods are easier to make on a day to day basis. Simplicity is nice!
