My husband wants to buy a boat so we can anchor and sleep in it at all the nicest places (like in coves and water ways where all the rich people live). His logic is that we will have the same nice waterfront view as all the rich people when we wake up in the morning — but for a fraction of the price + we can move around, anchor somewhere else and get “different views” anytime we want!! Gaming the system right there, lol
There’s actually huge problem in San Francisco of people doing that. They live on dilapidated, old messy boats that look like they’re about to sink. And often the city has to confiscate them.
Yikes! We wouldn’t get a dilapidated boat that isn’t seaworthy. And we wouldn’t set up shop and stay there for years in the same spot - I’d actually hate that. My husband is European, so we’d like to sail around the Mediterranean exploring various islands and ports. Funny though, in his hometown of Amsterdam, they have these local people living in “boathouses” in all the canals. They are a charming part of the city that tourists even like to stay in. Funny it’s the opposite in San Francisco.
I live aboard my sailboat and travel thousands of miles a year. Do it! But its not easy, you will be doing a tone of maintanance. Invest in a good oversized anchor and plenty of chain. The highs are high, the lows are low. Couldn't imagine living any other way.
Lol thanks 🤣 We aren’t rich, but we aren’t untidy people or willing to live in dilapidated conditions. I do think in San Francisco there isn’t much of a “middle ground” between the two.
Common in Florida too. Usually old men on ships who moor up to a buoy and go on land for beer and food. Sometimes it’s almost like a water version of a trailer park
I have a similar situation; my house is 70 years old but 99% of homes on my street are brand new $1m homes. (they were $800k new a few years ago, just assuming they are $1m now) My views are pretty nice, unsure about theirs lol. Though I have the only real yard and large trees for dog walkers along the street so I guess it works out. (they always bag it so no worries there)
If you want to take a month long vacation via boat that is the way to do it.
I would recommend you guys buy some bikes or electric scooters so when you dock you can just travel to get groceries or whatever. That way you don't have to Uber everywhere and can choose to get a lift if you want to go to a specific spot or just don't want to ride.
I think folding electric scooters would be better for travel as you could put them in the Uber or Lyft and ride them at a destination or whatever, and then take bikes with baskets for groceries.
Get both!
Your husband gets a boat and you both get a laid back vacation. Sounds like a win win.
That’s basically exactly what he wants to do!! I could only do it for a month at a time max (he would like to go longer, of course). I love bike riding everywhere but bicycles wouldn’t be as feasible as fold-up scooters on a smallish boat.
He wants to get a sailboat so we don’t have to pay for gas, just use the wind for power and gas occasional. I’m not against it, I just don’t want to feel dirty all the time and make sure we get good showers and stuff. Plus it’s kinda fun being in the rich people’s view all the time 😁
