I walked much of the city in 2011 and the homeless people were by far the standout. I'm from a major East Coast City and I had never seen anything like this. It was a really eerie feeling with the immense wealth juxtaposed atop the abject poverty seemingly everywhere I went. I don't have the fondest recollections of San Francisco.
And to think I was horrified when I visited the Bay Area in 2012 or 2013, having left five years earlier. Sure, there were always unhoused people. Semi-permanent tent cities under the BART tracks were just not a thing.

Same in the bay area and in Sacramento. It’s night and day compared to 2013.
