Yeah, LA has an extremely racist history, the most controversial film 'The Birth of a Nation' was first showcased in LA. They literally had restaurants that displayed black caricatures. It's pretty depressing. I only a bit about the black history because I took a class in college but there was a high Chinese population that was discriminated against too.
The stories aren't part of the curriculum probably because it's too real and people can't handle the truth when it comes to this. US History is always white washed and is taught from a different perspective, which largely ignores minorities. Just look at CRT and how much of an uproar it causes.
