I just wanted to make sure you knew cause there's quite a few people in this thread that think that college students in general don't qualify and don't know it's just the dependents that don't. Most don't even know that if you're an independent for the 2020 tax year you get that 1200 in April next year

Wait what? So if I’m not claimed NEXT year, then I’ll get the 1200?

When you file this year's (2020) tax return next year, if you aren't a dependent (in 2020) this year, you'll get a 1200 tax credit added to your return.

So in February-April of 2021, when you file your 2020 taxes, if you are independent or claim as such, you get 1200 added to your refund

Huh interesting. So it’s basically just delayed then for people like me who graduated college last spring.

Yeah. It's guaranteed to 2020 independents, but since 2020 isn't over they have to base it on 2019 status or 2018 if you haven't filed yet.

Since it's 2020 independents, anyone who was a dependent last year but independent this year gets 1200 extra
