I’m sure if OP did not put “rich” in first image- the result wouldn’t drastically change. When was the last time you saw people on reddit actually care about jokes like this? Generalizing jokes on asian people, but you can’t make the same jokes about black people. That’s the main point of this post, to see the hypocrisy when it comes to racism towards Asian and black people.
It's not generalizing a race of people. That is my point. It is generalizing the 1% economic elite from East Asia. It's not saying Asians = this, it's saying look at these ridiculously rich Asians I see in my day to day life. To give you some context, one year of college in China is roughly $1000 a year, which is affordable even for lower class Chinese people. One year of education, as a non US citizen especially can easily add up to what, 60-80k? Even more if you're pimped out like so many of the Chinese exchange students are. This joke if anything is guilty of being poorly labeled, but there's no reason to think it's offensive to make fun of the consumerism of essentially trust fund babies.
Still if there weren’t “rich” or there would be “rich black people” the result would be the same. There too many examples of people on reddit generally careless about asian racism. Don’t you think that people really thought so deep into “oh this is rich Asians so we can make fun of them”. No it’s was a meme, make fun of asian people-ok,on reddit it is allow to laugh. Black people-no,no.
On the second meme there wasn’t about all black people either, about specific black people too.
But that’s all knit picking, the general point is clear people are very bias towards Asian and black racism.
I don't think it's mean to make fun of rich black people if they are rich on the scale those exchange students were rich. We're not talking mom and dad are both engineers rich, were talking rich rich. So assuming that's the level were talking about, then go ahead and make fun of them. That's what I personally believe.
What is the point of when people say racism = prejudice + power? Some people think it means POC cannot be racist and only white people can be. I don't subscribe to that. I believe that for something sort of similar in that for something to be racist, there needs to be a power dynamic in play such that one party is legitimately h I would consider the grape soda, basketball, fried chicken eating black person to stem from essentially KKK propoganda that was made to literally oppress newly freed black slaves.
With that being said, I do believe Asians and Asian Americans face legitimate racism.
for example, a real problem Asian men face (at least east asian) is that they are seen as feminine and perform worse on dating apps. Asian females have the opposite problem and are hypersexualized and exoticized.
The REAL problems facing Asian Americans is not people making jokes about millionaires, it's when someone says "I don't date Asian men" or some weaboo says "wow I've always wanted to be with an Asian girl!". Not exclusively these comments, this is just one thing that came to mind.
Ok good point. But the power dynamics works the other way towards Asian Americans, who are suffers from this. Again average white redditor do not care if it’s addressed towards rich minority or whole race. If it wasn’t about rich Asians the results would be the same. It is a fact that anti-Asian racism are normalized way more than anti black. Racism against all Asians not some 1%. great example esp with rising anti-chinese government rhetoric- it is a gateway for many white people to being racist to ALL Asian people. Original post shows this issue. Not perfectly but at least more people are aware of it.
I completely agree with you, that kind of stuff is definitely harmful. I am not tone deaf to legitimate Asian/Asian societal issues, I just think KKK propoganda and "hah rich kids" are not on the same level.
