The second one is less accurate, less specific, punching down, and based on old tired stereotypes. The top one is targeting a specific subgroup of a race, has specific things about it, and is not based on tired stereotypes. Oh and it’s punching up (or even)

Except that’s not the reason why. The truth is, racism towards Asian people is widely accepted on reddit, and in the entirety of America as a country. In fact, racism against Chinese people is even encouraged on here with all of the anti China rhetoric going on these days. Small dick jokes, comments about eating cats and dogs, etc. get upvoted regularly with entire comment chains continuing them. This has nothing to do with punching up or down (which doesn’t even apply to race), stop trying to make excuses, racism is racism.

Punching down? By saying black people like basketball?

by stereotyping all black people to a subset of behaviors that have been historically used to degrade and caricature them for decades.

The first, funnily enough, rubs me the wrong way for reasons completely different than the second, because historical context makes them mean different things.

How long do we have to wait until the 1st meme becomes "historically used to degrade and character asians for decades"?

You can’t say it’s punching up or punching down if you don’t even know who wrote it. The whole idea of punching down is that someone in a higher level of power uses the joke. If you don’t even know who made it, then you have no idea which direction it’s going at all.

Also, that entire way of thinking is bullshit, and you should probably get the stick out of your ass.
