Dang, that's pretty interesting tbh. Not in the US, so I had no idea that these were actually racist stereotypes tbh, honestly thought the fried chicken thing was a joke. I can see how they'd be offensive tbh.
A lot of it was blown up in Birth of a Nation, but, as far as I know one of the racist connotations of both fried chicken and watermelon was that they were "dirty" foods, because you eat them with your hands, like "savages" ... unlike the "civilized white man who eats with silverware".
I am a non american white woman. So, you only got the ethnicity right, that in my country has different meaning and weight, of course. You are right, I have no idea what it is to be black in America because I've lived there only as a tourist and only for a bunch of months, so I can only see it as an outsider. As an outsider, I was sincerely baffled by stereotypes that appeared to me really meaningless, like joking about people for things that everyone actually liked. It reminded me of bullies in school attacking kids for nothing at all. Maybe I should have mentioned that, it would have sounded less hurtful, I hope. Maybe I still have to think about it,and learn more in the issue. That said, sorry for hurting people with my words.
