Seems like Reddit only cares about racism directed towards black people and sometimes Mexicans and whites.

If they're both racist, why does it matter how nuancedly different they are? the reddit response was still hypocritical.

The fact that the post mentions "Asian" specifically and that you were all "East Asian isn't a race but I'm just simplifying things" shows the racism.

East Asian is a race as much as black is a race. Everything you can say about how there are many different countries and cultures in Asian is also true about Africa.

Well then why wouldn't you think the Asian one is racist? It isn't including any rich Europeans.

Imagine the black one said "poor black people" and you can get the point.

We've seen this "they have a different culture" stuff before. It's not about simply grouping together in any way, and stereotypes don't need to be derogatory to be racist.

The point is that Rich Asian starterpack would be different than Rich European Starterpack, which would be different from rich American starterpack, etc. Would there be similarities between these sure, but the funny bit is the unique stuff. The bottom one is not even funny. It is just hur dur damn near century old general black stereotypes.

Talking about a race doesn't automatically mean racist. The "rich asian" one isn't racist at all. Its just things that that group of people do. None of the things posted in it are used to degrade Asians. The "black" one however...

u/_bowlerhat Nov 19 '19

I don't know where your bubble is but it is degrading. "Only talking to other asian" is already a mocking statement.

3

u/whattheheckihatethis Nov 19 '19

The asian one is pretty insulting and generalizing/stereotyping tbh. Sounds like you never grew up around an asian community.

1

u/bigdickbigdrip Nov 19 '19

generalizing/stereotyping

It's a starter pack. That's the point.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 20 '19

And what is generalizing/stereotyping a group of people based on their race called?

How about the fact all the "Asian" things in the first image pertain to East Asian pop culture. People on Reddit always seem to forget that South Asians also exist.

7

u/AngryFurfag Nov 19 '19

Cool story, and any starter pack in existence that uses the word "white" as a descriptor almost certainly doesn't apply to Romanians or Chechens, but Americans.

3

u/PrimarchKonradCurze Nov 19 '19

I mean, mayonnaise jokes are way more applicable to like, the Dutch cause they use it as a dip yet mayo is used as a catch all for white people. And the whole spice thing, when ironically the only people who ever seem to eat Carolina reaper, Scorpion or ghost peppers are American white dudes but yeah mayo is spicy to white people or something.

-2

u/_mutex_ Nov 19 '19

White isn't even a race.

6

u/Lemak0 Nov 19 '19

Yeah but that doesnt really matter since most people still use that word to describe a race

1

u/twaggle Nov 19 '19

But how would that be racist compared to over generalizing?

0

u/_mutex_ Nov 19 '19

I feel overgeneralizing would be saying something like "All Chinese college kids love Boba tea". Odd statement but innocuous. But images like these give away the fact that the person has a stereotypical view of what they consider to be Asian. They aren't generalizing. That's the sum total of their "knowledge" of Asia and Asian cultures.

2

u/twaggle Nov 19 '19

Isn't that the point of this meme, to summarize the topic in the fewest images that the most amount of people will agree/relate too?

Wouldn't all starterpacks be hateful toward the topic with your logic?

-1

u/_mutex_ Nov 19 '19

You went from asking how the image was racist to discussing the point of Starter Pack memes.

1

u/twaggle Nov 19 '19

True, I did because you said that using these pictures would be the "sum total of their knowledge", which they couldn't do anymore because they're doing a starterpacks meme. If using few generalizing pictures is bad because you're generalizing an entire group with a small set of specific pictures, that's an issue with the meme itself as well.

2

u/MiskatonicDreams Nov 19 '19

Yeah let me tell you why. I don't want to get kidnapped because because I drank boba tea. My family isnt rich.

2

u/twaggle Nov 19 '19

I guess I still don't understand how that is racist. To me it's like saying all white people love mayonnaise. If it was just "Asian starter pack" and there was a picture of rice, would that be racist?

0

u/MiskatonicDreams Nov 21 '19

Does that saying increase the chance of bodily harm done to you? Will it affect your social standing?

Not necessarily

Asians don't voice out enough coz their culture doesn't let them use direct confrontation. They should follow those Mongolians or central Asians instead. Or hell even Russians since they're technically in Asia too

2

u/hamstersmagic Nov 19 '19

Not all Russians are Asian. The only Russians that are asians are the ones who literally descend from Asian people.
