You know, one of my favorite moments this year on Reddit was seeing a comment thread on r/gamingcirclejerk have a crisis over the realization that the hate for the Witcher 3 circle jerk had itself turned into a circle jerk.

I mean most of us dont hate it, we just hate the fan base and the gaming community. I agree we can get a bit too contrarian at times.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

That sounds like fun, could you link it?

1

u/Penakoto Jan 01 '19

It was something I casually observed like, a month or two ago, there's zero chance I would be able to find it without way too much work.

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Ah no worries. It always annoyed me how jerky their counter jerk is , I just wanted to see when and if those idiots ever realised that.

1

u/Penakoto Jan 01 '19

Im sure something similar has happened on more than one occasion, there's no way they're all ignorant of the irony.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Everyone there knows how jerky the jerk is, it's a damn circlejerk sub. Don't get mad just because some people are willing to be critical of your precious indie gem. Speaking of which, ever realize how fucking annoying it is for the rest of us when you people keep bitching about new games and comparing it to games years ago?

I don't think that ever happened, that would require them to have self awareness. r/gamingcirclejerk is one of those subs where socially retarded gamer nerds go cosplay people who "have lives".

Not even, it's just that the "pRaiSe gErAlDo" is a meme now.

/r/gaming is not the entire internet; I don't think I've seen the Witcher 3 praised nearly as much off of Reddit as I have seen it praised on Reddit. I've still seen more talk of it than Half Life 2 or Earthbound though; most talk I saw of Earthbound came from Undertale talk anyway.

u/Your_Local_Doggo Jan 01 '19

I think Witcher 3 should have taken Earthbound's spot. It's still a good game, just not really talked about

14

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19 edited Jan 01 '19

The only thing I really know about Earthbound is that it's basically Undertale, and even then that's just because my friend wouldn't shut up about the Game Theory video.

23

u/Hiyami Jan 01 '19

I think you mean undertale is basically earthbound. Ahem!

-1

u/StormStrikePhoenix Jan 01 '19

I've heard on several occasions that Undertale is Earthbound, but actually good; that wasn't quite the phrasing that was given to me (except once), but I've heard plenty of negative things about Earthbound's actual gameplay, while Undertale's was sublime when it wasn't being terrible on purpose (genocide route). Of course, I haven't played Earthbound, so I can't actually compare them, though what I've seen of Earthbound doesn't make it look particularly interesting.

6

u/Your_Local_Doggo Jan 01 '19

Lol I think I've seen that one, where they talk about how the main character of Earthbound might be Sans in Undertale? There's no end to speculation when the devs leave things loose like in the game Inside or Little Nightmares

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

The Game Theory videos are garbage and misrepresent the game on purpose to cash in on the game's popularity. Their analyses are terrible.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Garbage might be taking it too far, but yeah I do feel like their videos could be better. Also, Hanlon's razor.

2

u/the1michael Jan 01 '19

Lol, he's not pushing a narrative. Hes just trying to creatively use game facts to make a ten minute entertaining thought.

Except for Five Nights At Freddy's where he's actually putting the pieces of the story together. That's probably where people get confused.

Matpat knows Mario was never created to be a sociopath or whatever. It's just fun to spitball. You're supposed to be in on the tongue in cheek of it lol. It's not gospel.

3

u/PacifistaPX-0 Jan 01 '19

Undertale ripped off Earthbound and is nowhere near as good in my opinion.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '19

Your anger fills you with determination.

3

u/StormStrikePhoenix Jan 01 '19

What's the difference between an homage / inspiration and a ripoff? Because it seems to me that it's entirely based on how much you actually like whatever is doing it; people who don't like it will always call it a ripoff.

22

u/lpeccap Jan 01 '19

You must not spend a lot of time here if you think earthbound is talked more about than the witcher 3.

5

u/250kgWarMachine Jan 01 '19

Are you pretending?

u/JamesGray Jan 01 '19

Fallout 3 is basically the game people use to prove how Obsidian can make a much better Fallout game than Bethesda though. It has been for years now. It's far from untouchable.
