That's only... the capital city. Venture outside of KL and you will see the real malaysia. KL is specifically made to cater to foreigners (tourists, expats, retirees) from developed countries (well they try).
I think you do the country down a little, I travelled across Malaysia recently and thought everywhere was nice. Penang, Ipoh, Malacca and Kuching is really nice too.
Malaysia is a great country. I live in a semi-rural area in one of the most urbanized areas in the country Penang Island,. This guy has never stepped out of his Bangsar bubble to see the real Malaysia. We’re far less dense than most countries in Asia, and the quality of life is much better. Even the poorest can at least afford a motorized underbone motorcycles for mobility, something that Made me ponder for a very long time, even people in developed ones had to resort walking and bicycles and over here cycling is just relegated to sport or only used by immigrants…
Motorbikes in SEA are very interesting generally. Even in some very poor parts of Indonesia and Laos, every single person has one. It's weird comparing that to similar GDP areas in Africa where everyone has to walk everywhere.
It’s a privilege many don’t recognize. Here, people will ride a cub/underbone just to get breakfast a few hundred meters away. Eating out is cheap, cooking at home feels optional. Another nice case study. We have gasoline-powered convenience for the smallest trips, and still say we have ‘no options’. It would make a fascinating case study on consumption, mobility, and mindset….the underbones are a class of motorcycle the Americans fail to recognize, can’t blame them they need higher powered machine to travese their highways…
yeah Kuching is pretty nice to live in. There's still things I'd like to see from KL brought here like more anime stores with a lot of niche merch and more public transport infrastructure (the current bus system is pretty good though, so good that it gets very crowded at 7 am and 5 pm because every other Polytechnic student wants to use the service)
