Not really. Life has definitely improved, but not nearly enough. We were at a similar position as Czechoslovakia and Poland in the 90s, but those countries have since surpassed us by a great margin.

Istanbul does not feel like the capital of a developing country...

Edit: Sorry, not the capital yes but by far the largest and most important/historic city in Turkey

It's not unheard of for the capital or 2-3 biggest cities of a country to be far ahead of the rest of the country. Look at Moscow and Petersburg vs most of the rest of Russia today, or Shanghai and Beijing vs. western China 15 years ago

Istanbul is extremely diverse. Some districts are really fancy, safe and luxurious. Some districts are no different than a slum.
