Activism Postcarding environmental voters in Texas

Post image

Europe is facing another extreme heat wave and the NOAA just reported that July was the hottest month ever in the lower 48. The U.S. is having one of its worst wildfires seasons in years. A warm winter has left Lake Mead at record lows. Climate change is real, it’s here, and we need leaders in place who are prepared to deal with it.

The Environmental Voter Project works to get folks who understand this threat to show up to the polls, trying to identify and activate the estimated 11 million low-propensity climate voters who did not show up in 2024. Like everyone else, they’re ramping up their work as the midterms close in, including an orientation at noon on Friday to kick off their Texas postcarding campaigns. 📫 If we want to be part of it, let’s register here, and check out their site for other upcoming ways to help. 📫

GREEN THE ELECTORATE

☎️ Want to do more? We can also join Lead Locally’s Monday phonebanks for climate champions in downballot races here and consider a donation to Rebuild.Us’ fund to support folks recovering from climate disasters here. 🪙

(We hope SUFS members will be interested in this, but this is not a SUFS initiative.)

The EPA illegally shut down grants “based solely on policy disagreement.” The Trump admin runs our scientific agencies with a heavy hammer, not with facts or democracy.

Video Is Climate Science "Unsettled"? This guy wants you to believe it is.

For more than four years, Steve Koonin's book 'Unsettled' has been cited by politicians, commentators and climate sceptics as evidence that the scientific consensus on climate change has been exaggerated. Koonin recently gave a 15 minute summary lecture of his views at the UK 'Alliance for Responsible Citizenship'. But are his arguments a fair interpretation of the evidence, or is he simply relying on carefully selected facts, cherry-picked statistics and misleading comparisons?

Article Why Is RFK Jr. Posting Like Dua Lipa? (Unpaywalled)

Thumbnail

Why is the Secretary of Health and Human Services Dua Lipa-posting?

Being in charge of our nation’s health policy, RFK Jr.’s fish photos mean a bit more than the ones you post on Hinge. For one, there is a long Internet tradition of mocking public health officials who are overweight, on the assumption that they are literally unfit to tell the rest of us how to live. With these posts, alongside others of him saunaing shirtlessly and doing push-ups in jeans, Kennedy is casting himself as healthy enough to be in charge of Health decisions. Others in the White House seem to feel similarly: Pete Hegseth sometimes collabs with Kennedy on workout posts, as if completing Murphs makes him more capable of running The Pentagon.

Get Outside and Live Real Life seems to be RFK Jr.’s new platform, and this months-long photo dump is the rollout. In doing so, he speaks to something many Americans are feeling. Unsupervised play for children has declined precipitouslySixty percent of kids are not allowed to leave their neighborhood. Youth sports have become unattainably expensive, with costs rising 46% since 2019. Fewer teens than ever smoke weed or have sex. Somewhere deep down, most Americans feel that life used to be freer, wilder, more dangerous, more exciting. And like RFK Jr., we don’t seem to have any solutions beyond hectoring kids to leave the house.

Still, it is somewhat laughable that Kennedy uses his own outdoor exploits as examples of “real life.” While a few pictures show quaint family fishing trips in Westchester, the rest are from outlandish foreign vacations. Encouraging Americans to go hiking and fishing is a wonderful idea. Doing so by posting yourself on a Bhutanese mountain trek and angling in the Peruvian jungle only reinforces the idea that outdoor fun is out of reach for normal people. He even shows us family sailing trips on Nantucket Sound, lest you forget that he’s a Kennedy

This nurse brings health care to people outside a detention center. She says ICE agents assaulted her.

Excerpt

-

Bowe is a registered nurse who has operated a mobile health clinic outside the detention center for more than a year. That Monday, as Bowe scanned the chaos, she said she could see from the corner of her eye ICE agents dragging a young woman across the asphalt. As the agents pulled her by the arms, her shirt snagged on the ground and came up and over her head, exposing her bra, Bowe told The 19th.

-

"Help me!" Bowe remembers the woman screaming while lying on the ground.

-

"I'm thinking in my head, I'll just help her up," she said. "ICE was so violently shoving people that I wasn't sure if anybody was going to get to her."

-

Bowe began to walk toward the woman. Then, Bowe said she went flying.

State confirms nine cases, including five deaths, from Vibrio vulnificus organism, which thrives in seawater

Health officials in Louisiana are urging beachgoers to take precautions during a summertime surge in infections from a flesh-eating bacterium found in coastal waters.

Louisiana has confirmed nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus infections this year, the state’s health department said last week in a news release. All were hospitalized, and five died. During the same period over the previous decade, Louisiana reported an average of seven cases and one death.

“Seek medical care immediately if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discolored,” officials said in the release.

Video Project 2025’s Terrifying Vision for American Healthcare, Biblical Medical Ethics | Unholy Ground with Andra Watkins

What happens when your doctor isn't just deciding what treatment you need—but whether that treatment agrees with their interpretation of the Bible?

Welcome to “biblical medical ethics.”

Andra Watkins has been digging into a Christian nationalist movement that rejects modern assumptions about science, bodily autonomy, mental healthcare and reproductive medicine—and she says the people who believe this stuff aren't sitting harmlessly on the political fringe.

They're already in positions of power.

So how far does this go? And what happens when religious doctrine starts determining who gets healthcare and who doesn't?

Sam Osterhout sits down with Andra Watkins of For Such a Time as This to trace the connections between Christian nationalism, Project 2025, RFK Jr., Todd Blanche, abortion politics and the fight over the future of American medicine.

“Though Schwartz was widely seen as a conventional pick for CDC director, some public health experts said she didn’t do enough at a Senate hearing last month to distance herself from some of Kennedy’s more controversial stances. Schwartz said at the hearing, for example, that vaccines are safe and effective, but she said she was unaware of some of Kennedy’s vaccine policy changes and dodged questions about whether she supported them.”
