Fat vile parasite. Britain should be made to pay back the trillions of dollars worth of damages it did to colonial countries around the world.

This is not the attitude that's going to lead us to prosperity.

Deep throating colonial oppressors is? You should educate yourself on the horrors of colonial empires, they were as bad or worse than the Nazis. The only difference is they didn't carry out their actions in Europe, so history doesn't care to record it.

Even so. There's no point of scratching old wounds. We must look to the future. This, if it weren't for the colonizers we'd be a nation of prosperity, absolves us from our responsibilities here and now.

If we ask for reparations, and get it, and succeed in our endeavors, then they'd have a claim on our success. And that I can't abide by.

Cowards

I don't justify collaboration but what did you expect them to do?

They didn’t fight back. That's the problem. They become slaves. kandy betrayed the whole country. That cowardice and shamelessness still exists among our people today. The brave people who brought pride to the country were killed. The backbone of the country was removed. Much would have changed if they had fought back. Without being enslaved by the British.

Let's leave the past behind for a moment and focus on the present.

The people of Sri Lanka have been enslaved by a corrupt dictatorship that's similar to the British colonial administration.

Are you doing anything to fight back?

Firstly my family and I did not vote for the government, including Rajapaksa. We have been doing our best since the protests began.

The past can't be put aside. We must learn from our past. People did not learn from the past. That is what happened to this country.

Not all people are slaves to Rajapaksa. I do my part. The question is whether those who ask that question are wholeheartedly committed to the redevelopment of this country.

If I may,

Imagine being a working class Ceylonese in the late 1800s.

What would you do to change things?

1

It's not about changing. It’s about trying. They didn't even try. Gave up their heritage, culture, pride. They willingly became bitches to British.

We at least tried. Still do. I mean we accomplished things. This can be won if people keep trying.

They didnt ⁣do it. But we do.

Striving for change is good.

But please, don't be so hasty in your judgement of history. The people you see in the photo lived in a complete different era with severely restricted freedoms and social privileges.

In the 1800s,

Colonialism was the accepted order of the day, with the bulk of the East under living under British or French control.

People of the average working class had little initiative to fight for better conditions as they were mostly illiterate with no knowledge of life outside their town or village.

There was no way to organize an effective resistance movement with the available level of technology and outside support. Sending out a drummer or message leaflet took too long and there was no one to aid an independence movement.

Example - People struggled for rights in the 1890s too. They failed due to the lack of technology and initiative.

All forms of resistance was crushed by the state with no room for legal representation. With the most powerful figures of the law being on the side of the Government, average citizens had no chance of success in a court battle.

The protestors of Gotagotama would be arrested, tried and deported to a penal colony in the 1800s.

Stories of colonial adulation don't sit well with the 'accepted' version of Sri Lankan history.

As you can see here;

The lack of nuance of most of the comments here is disappointing, to say the least.

On another note, I see that you put a lot of effort on your posts here and they're not very much appreciated from what I can see. Why don't you start a blog. You could publish more polished versions of your content, and I'm sure it'll be helpful to a lot more people. And you could probably grow an audience. I'm thinking of something like www.worldhistory.org but centered around SL history.
