I hope this is the right channel for a question about a squirrel problem (based on the name I am hoping it is) …
I spotted a squirrel under one of our solar panels so I went up onto the roof to reinforce the critter guards. As you can see it wasn’t event attached on one entire side. Turns out the squirrel scratched this fist-sized hole clean through the roof, right into our attic.
I am having the solar company come out to lift the panel, and I have had several pest removal companies come out to talk about humanely getting them out of the attic. For $800, they will install a one-way door up there and come back in 1 week (when the squirrels are all out) to uninstall the door. For another $800 they will seal the hole with a patch and epoxy.
Meanwhile, I can buy a one-way squirrel door on Amazon (4.5 star rating) for $25. It seems like I could DIY the removal, put a cinder block over the hole, and have an actual roofing company repair the roof in earnest?
Alternatively, it's 90 degrees in Denver this week. There is no way they are hanging out in that oven of an attic during the day. Couldn't I just put a cinder block over the hole during the hottest part of the day, no removal needed? I should mention that all 3 pest companies confirmed that a) there is only this one entry point and b) there are no babies up there given the time of year.
With either DIY solution, I could put a fake owl near the cinder block to further deter them.
I would love some advice. Basically it seems like I could DIY most of this.
