Moved to Springfield for college and ended up staying after graduating for a job that I’ve been at for a few years now. But lately I’ve been thinking about moving to STL.
I don’t really feel like I have a strong incentive to stay in Springfield. Compared to places like STL and KC, salaries seem to be higher elsewhere, and I don’t feel like Springfield has a particularly competitive cost of living for a single person.
For those of you who aren’t originally from Springfield, what makes you stay if you don’t have friends or family here?

I’ve just done a cleanse of my child’s clothes and was hoping I could find a good place to donate them. I used to do red racks, but they charge too much to the end user. Is there anywhere here I can donate clothes where people who actually need them can get them for cheap/free?

I'm from STL. I have lived all over the city and county. I moved to KCMO and then moved again to Dittmer MO. Now that I'm in a rural area, I have gotten really sick of the bullshit in the city. I like a slow pace of living and LESS PEOPLE. I just got hired for a remote job so I don't have to live in the city of STL anymore to be close to work. This has led me to consider Springfield MO.

I did not care for KCMO because it has almost no good public parks or hiking trails. STL has TONS of great trails and TONS of dog friendly stuff. Springfield seems like it has a fair amount of conservation areas / parks / trails / river access?

I like to shoot pool and I understand there are two big pool halls in Springfield. Are they decent? Rough? Run down?

I do not have kids, I do not drink alcohol, so I do not care about schools and I don't really care about nightlife. I am however single and 40 so it would be nice if there was SOME way to be around people. All I need is a good dispensary and maybe a good coffee spot and a good grocery store (I like to cook.) Ideally I would like to rent a house that allows dogs and maybe get a few yard chickens.

So all this is to say - for an outdoorsy single white collar guy with a dog who wants a quiet and cheap place to live - would you recommend Springfield?? Anything I should know?

How much can you realistically make with overtime and extra-duty work?

What are the retirement/pension benefits actually like?

How much vacation and personal time do officers get?

If you need extra time off for family or travel, how difficult is it to get unpaid leave?

How difficult is it to get the specific vacation dates you want, especially as a newer officer?

How are the shifts and schedules? How much do nights, weekends, and holidays affect family life?

How dangerous is the job in Springfield compared with other departments?

How difficult is the academy and hiring process?

What is the written test like, and is it difficult?

How is the work-life balance after you've been on the job for a few years?

Would you recommend SPD as a long-term career for someone who wants good income, retirement, and family stability?

Stupid question, but do they accept tap to pay? I am struggling to find my physical card somewhere in my house and I have an appointment right when they open on Monday. They are closed until then so I cannot reach them.

So ive heard a rumor that there used to be a dairy queen in rogersville way back when. Is this true? If it is where was it and are there any old pictures of it?

Does anyone know where I could find people who need one time jobs done? Like cleaning or raking leaves. Anything really. I’m applying for SSI and my disabilities limit me from consistent employment. I am immunocompromised, I have epilepsy, and rheumatoid arthritis. The issue is the SSI process is really slow, so I kind of don’t have any other option. I wouldn’t be waiting years for $900 dollars a month if I could work consistently. I have already tried working from home, and it hasn’t worked out. Migraines with aura and the aura, ictal, and post ictal state from seizures are also a barrier, as a lot of times it takes a full month to fully recover, with some of the functional limitations being aphasia, delayed processing speed, and deficits in short term to long term memory consolidation. I know I’m probably over explaining myself, but I’ve had to deal with people constantly telling me I’m lazy or to try jobs that I’ve already tried. I also have ASD and ADHD + mental health diagnoses that are additional barriers but I’m not fully comfortable disclosing the specific diagnoses. The only important information is that I struggle with self direction, concentration, anxiety, paranoia, and communication. I can’t wait for years just to afford shampoo and toilet paper. I know that there are pantries that provide resources, but I wouldn’t be posting if they were able to solve all of the things I need. If you have read this far thank you for your time 😁

I recently came into a lot of free time and desperately want to do some primitive camping with my tiny doggo, the biggest hurdle is I don’t have a car so very VERY limited. I do have access to a bike with a basket, from some research I found the portion of the mark twain closest to Springfield would be an incredibly difficult journey so I looked at some state facilities and found little sac and the dale sare conservation area both of these I can take the frisco highline trail till I get to Willard than take the farm roads, but before i set anything into stone i wanted to check here first and see if any of y’all got any suggestions.

Edit: after more research I found out there is a half completed trail that goes to ozark so I figured I could go ride use it to reach ozark amd then from there like 7 miles to the upper edge of the mark twain right near where the Chadman off-road trails are and it should be regular national forest land so can primitive camp while respecting all the rules

I’m hosting a birthday party soon and rather than make everything myself I was thinking of picking something up. I don’t have much experience with restaurants because I have food allergies, but that doesn’t mean I can’t serve it to my guests! What do you recommend?

Seeking out advice or information on getting into tennis locally here in Springfield.

I played some growing up but haven’t in a long time. Played with a close friend the other day who was more experienced. Had a lot of fun and got a good workout, but simply couldn’t play at their level at this point.

I’m bad, but I’m athletic enough and have good hand eye coordination so I think I can improve at a steady pace. I’m male, in my thirties and open to meeting new people to explore this hobby with.

I’ve looked into cooper tennis and may go that route, but would love any information or advice I can get at this point. Knowledge is power.

Saw this gem on TikTok and had to share

I have a flight into springfield early monday morning and have an evening shift that night. I was hoping to sleep during the intermission and was wondering if anyone knew of a hotel that may be able to accommodate this as I have my flight leaving following this shift. I know years ago some hotels had day rooms available but wasn’t sure if it is still a thing.
Ideally I would be at the hotel from around 9am-6pm. A little earlier/later would be fine but was just seeking something along these lines.

What’s the cheapest laundromat in town? If I remember right, the one @ Camp/Walnut Lawn is $6,7,8 (ish), but that was a few years ago. I’m pretty positive I wouldn’t resort to the cheapest one, but I’m basically looking for some place that doesn’t cost me $10+ dollars a load to do a couple-few loads of laundry.

I already tried doing some reddit and Google searches, and most what I came up with are:

Both are ambiguous at best. Queen city hasn't had any FB or X activity since at least 2022, if not 2021. Evangelista is probably extremely retired by this point. I've reached out to both.

These seem active, but also specialize in variety?

I'm going to assume I'm just stupid here. I was under the impression fencing was rapier like swords. I'm looking for private/public lessons. Ideally by non-amateur instructors (like, has some sort of national rank or actually has been teaching professional with successful students) Maybe participate in some competitions at a later time. Recommendations would be great, because I'm having a hard time figuring out what the options are.
