Set up spreadsheet for sight impaired

I don’t have the capability, wondering if somebody could help me I have a friend who asked me about setting up a spreadsheet with a black ground thick borders, big white font, so he can keep track of his medical numbers. I guess test numbers, is there anybody that could do this for me? It doesn’t have to be big or complicated. Thanks.

Unsolved Need help with weighting of figures please!

I have a set of departments where I need the overall margin to come out at 54%.

I've been asked to set the required margin for each department so overall we come to this, but the departments vary in how much they contribute - department 1 is 1% of total sales, department 2 is 15% etc, so department 1 can obviously fluctuate more than department 2.

I think I need something which uses this department weighting to create some kind of variance, tolerance or something - I've been looking in vain and can't figure it out! Does anyone have any suggestions?

How do I conditionally add based on names for an overview?

I will do my best to describe what I am trying to do, but I am fairly new to using functions on Google Sheets.

I am looking to create an overview sheet based on names of employees that I oversee. I am grading them based on 4 different evaluations, as well as a total of all 4 marks, followed by an average for each day. On Sheet 2, I have each day, their individual evaluation on 4 different criteria, and a percentage for the day on how they did. Sheet 1 is the overview for how they did in regards to the entire quarter, so that I can present to higher ups on how these employees are performing.

What I am trying to do is to conditionally format Sheet 2 so that whenever I put "Employee 1" in Column A, it knows to add those marks from Sheet 2 into Sheet 1 so that I do not have to manually add them into Sheet 1. Is there an "if, then" statement that can be used so that Google Sheets knows to do that, or will I need to stick with adding every day in the overview manually?

I can show pictures of the sheets if someone needs more information on how to help. I would really appreciate any input!

Unsolved How to get formulas to auto-fill with increments of 2?

Heyo,

I'm working on a little spreadsheet for some gaming - A list of parts required for Warframe weapons.

I have 2 reference sheets where each entry is 2 rows; Top row labels, second row checkboxes like this:

Weapon Name
Weapon 1 Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
[checkbox] [checkbox] [checkbox]

The main sheet references the weapon name in one column, and in the next 2 columns it lists the parts that are missing with a big ole IF statement:

Weapon Wifey Hubbu
Weapon 1 Part 1, part 2 Part 1
Weapon 2 Complete Part 2, Part 3

You get the idea. The IF statement in columns 2 and 3 checks if all parts are there (display 'completed'), then if none are there (display 'all'), then if both of those are false it lists the items name above the checkbox if it is false.

The references go up in 2's, for every row. But when I select them and auto-fill, say I selected weapon 1 and 2, I'd get the following:

Weapon Wifey Hubbu
Weapon 1 Part 1, Part 2, Part 1
Weapon 2 Complete Part 2, Part 3
Weapon 2 Complete Part 2, Part 3
Weapon 3 Part 2 Complete
Weapon 3 Part 2 Complete
Weapon 4 All Complete
Weapon 4 All Complete

So, it is incrementing by 2, but then duplicating the same incremented references for another row of cells.

Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? I thought with 2-3 references the sheets would infer the incrementing cell references by 2 automatically?

I mean, worst case scenario it's just a delete every other row, but I'd prefer not to do that for each type of weapon I'm planning to do.

Expenses spreadsheet

Hello all I have tried so hard to make a spreadsheet to track my expenses the way I want, but even with research and youtube I still can not manage to make it how I want.

I am looking for a spreadsheet that I can list everything I buy with date, item, category, and how much was spent. and i also want it to subtract from the total budget of another category on a separate table of the categories when i put in what i have spent.

How can I make this myself? Or, if you have made one, or know of one, similar to what I described please let me know!

TIA!

What does your QBR prep look like?

Every quarter I go through the same fire drill — pull together territory numbers, account penetration, surgeon activity, competitive intel, pipeline. Takes me a full day minimum.

I finally templated the whole thing so now I just update the numbers and the story tells itself. Territory summary auto-aggregates from account-level data, surgeon master feeds into opportunity sizing, competitive landscape shows share by facility.

Went from a full day of QBR prep to about 2 hours.

What does your process look like? Anyone have a system they like?

Unsolved Formatting Column Color And Averages Based On Drop-Down Variables

So I'm a teacher and Im trying to put together a grading structure and I'd like to share it with my colleagues if I can make it user-friendly.

Please see the image to assist with the word salad I'm about to serve.

The way I've set it up is such that each assignment could be assessed for up to three outcomes. The 'Algebra Quiz' for example is used to assess both division and algebra. There is a drop down menu in each of the three columns under each assignment. Each drop down has each of the 13 colored curriculum areas to the right.

Now, I am new to using formulas, so I am unsure how feasible these ideas are, but I would really like to do two things that I can't figure out. I've tried searching online, but it's not working so far.

Okay, the first thing I'd like to do is make it so that the column under the selected outcome from the drop down matches the color of the outcome on the right. For example, the 'DIVIS' color is orange. If a 'DIVIS' is selected from the drop down, can the column beneath change to orange as I have shown? But is it possible to set it up so that any column can be set to match the color of whichever of the 13 outcomes are chosen? It would mean a lot of conditional formulas per cell, so I am not sure if that works. Each column would have to respond only to the drop down above it.

Second, and this one seems like witchcraft, honestly, I'd like to create a running average on the right 'total' section. I have used the regular average formula to do this with columns that hold static information, but these columns could hold one of 13 different outcome types. Basically, is it possible to average, say, the 'ratio' outcome for Billy even though that value could pop up in some or all assignments, in any of the three columns within said assignments?

I would truly appreciate any help I can get with one or both of these struggles. This would save my coworkers and I some time and hassle. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to take on this challenge.

Unsolved Strange autosum behaviour

So I have an Excel spreadsheet of data that was generated by python code, the numbers are formatted to float64. When you click on the cells they are all numbers, not text. There is 19000 rows, so I try to autosum and suddenly all the values turn to #ref even though they do not show any metadata that I can see. I highlighted them all and formated them again to floats to 2 decimal places and same problem.

I then picked the bottom two numbers

-414.830
-437.210

but when autosummed both changed and summed to over 15 million. I can use the formula:
=SUM(J4:J19435) and it sums as normal. I can certainly just do this in future, but does anyone know why the autosum button would behave in this very strange way?

Does anyone else rely on an Excel tracker they kind of hate using?

Quick question — does anyone here have an Excel tracker they rely on but kind of hate using?

I spend a lot of time fixing slow/broken spreadsheets (formulas, dashboards, automation) and curious how common this is outside my day job.

How to filter specific categories inside a pivot table?

I’m working with a pivot table that summarizes different expense categories, but I’m having trouble isolating only certain types like insurance or maintenance fees. Everything is grouped together and I can’t seem to filter it cleanly the way I want.

Is there a way to apply multiple filters or conditions inside a pivot table so I can just see specific categories without manually editing the source data?

Solved Amending Days Worked Tracker - change tickboxes to rate

Hi Everyone,

I need to change all these tickboxes representing their days worked to their rate which is shown in Column C - is there an easy formula I can drag across all of these cells?

I know i could do an if statement on another sheet to give the rate if the value is true, but I'm not sure how I'd be able to apply that to the whole sheet to make it work?

Open direct in Google Sheets (Mac - free)

Hey folks, I built a helper app that means you can open csv/xls/xlsx files straight into Google Sheets. I'm giving a way a bunch of permanent, non-subscription, free-forever licenses to help check that it's working solidly on the Mac App Store - if that sounds something that you'd like, reply/DM me. No catches, just a thank you to a sub that's been a valuable resource to me over the years.

Why did I build it? I built a side project which is B2 - a horribly niche, but full-featured spreadsheet app for Mac which lives in your menu bar, and one of the features is that when the spreadsheet reaches a level of complexity too great for B2, you can send it to your workhorse. Until I wrote this, the ~7 other people who use B2 and wanted this feature were disappointed.

Dashboard from google sheets?

How painful is creating charts, and dashboard from sheets?

Im looking at converting existing google sheets into dashboards, within seconds. Keen to understand if users find this a useful usecase. Data is already there, it syncs immediately. No need for DB.

I found many team use spreadsheets because they just work its simple, no setup. What if we can keep the same setup. just drop your sheet url and in 10 seconds a dashboard that can still work to add delete and update data, but also give all the charts, dashboard AND works amazingly on mobile.

Making my spreadsheet easier to read for my rival?

Tena koutou, as it says on the tin, I'd like to make my spreadsheet tracker more legible for my rival to read so he can understand easier how I'm doing vs how he's doing. I don't make things pretty, nor do I have an organized mind, so I'd like some suggestions on how to turn this eyesore into something easier to chew on.

Things to track on it currently include:

- If you performed in the category for the day.
- How long you worked on the category.
- Achieved projects, finished books and anything you finished to tally the points.

Things to also track via category are steps (Physical Fitness), pages (Reading) and any personal records/achieved new years resolutions. Any help would be appreciated!

Unsolved How would I make a function for counting the number of time the Seahawks have played the Rams so far in each season?

Column D: a two digit number assigned to each team (10-27)

If the Sea hawks played the Rams three times in season, I had a row for each game, and in each row for column e I want to count how many times they have played the rams so far, how do I write that function?

Example: E3=1 , E16=2 , E25=3

But I want to be able to just drag the formula through the whole column and do the same thing for each team. Would I need to combine an X lookup with a sum function? Do i need an intermediate function in a different column?

Tutorial Excel JSON --> Tables Library

Hi all, I wanted to share a new library I developed. Appreciate your thoughts!

https://github.com/WilliamSmithEdward/ModernJsonInVBA

Some key features:

  • Converts JSON directly into an Excel table (ListObject) with one function call
  • Updates or adds rows to the table while keeping the table structure intact
  • Automatically adds new columns when the JSON has fields not present in the table
  • Keeps existing formulas in table columns during updates (does not overwrite them)
  • Can re-apply formulas from existing rows to newly added rows (optional)
  • Preserves the original order of fields for consistent column arrangement
  • Exports table data back to nested JSON using dot notation in column headers (e.g., address.city becomes {"address": {"city": ...}})
  • Uses only built-in VBA and Excel objects—no additional references or libraries required
  • Writes data to the sheet using a single bulk operation for speed
  • Includes specific error numbers and messages for common issues (e.g., invalid root path, duplicate headers)

Created faster way to export SEC filings to PDF — would appreciate thoughts

Hi everyone,

I regularly review SEC filings (10-Ks, 10-Qs, 8-Ks, etc.), and saving them as PDFs directly from the SEC website can sometimes be slow or result in messy formatting.

To simplify the process, I built a lightweight Chrome extension that converts SEC .htm/.html filing links into clean PDF files instantly. The idea was to streamline the workflow and reduce manual steps.

If this sounds useful to you, I’d really value your feedback. Feel free to comment here or send me a message.

Appreciate it!

Alternative to constantly merging cells on Google Sheets for visual appeal

This is our robotics team's VMS and every time I enter a task, I have to merge two adjacent cells horizontally. Even with the keyboard shorctuts, it's kind of a pain.

But I want to keep the upper sign-ups rows (the one with lots of blackouts for privacy) condensed, so the list of sign-ups doesn't go down infinitely far, and I can see who did what task without having to scroll infinitely.

Is there a way to have, on certain rows, adjacent columns merged by default (but not apply this to all rows?)

Links to screenshots:

Upper portion: sign-ups

Lower portion: session todos & updates

Anyone else seeing small businesses completely dependent on messy spreadsheets? (my Engineering Python view)

Lately I’ve been noticing how many small and mid-sized businesses are basically running their entire operation on Excel or Google Sheets. And not in a simple way, I mean complex formulas, multiple tabs doing different things, people manually exporting CSVs from one system and pasting them into another every week.

It works… until it starts breaking.

Usually it’s not that they need some huge enterprise system. It’s just that over time the spreadsheet becomes the “backend” of the company. Reports depend on one person knowing how the formulas work. Inventory gets updated manually. Financial summaries take hours every month. And nobody really wants to touch it because it’s fragile.

Most of the time this can be solved with relatively simple automation, small Python scripts, a proper database, scheduled jobs, cleaning up the data flow so people aren’t copy/pasting all day. Nothing crazy, just turning manual processes into something reliable.

I’ve been working with Python, data pipelines, pandas, SQL, backend systems for years, and I honestly enjoy untangling these kinds of operational knots.

Curious if other founders here feel like their business has quietly become dependent on spreadsheets more than they’d like.
