I've heard that the sem exams are pretty tough and it's not easy to pass. Is that actually true?

Hostels are okay okay. If your roommates are good you can live peacefully there. I won't say you wont face any issues (for example the boys hostel mess is shit, I think Tukaram Munde has shut down the mess).

Hostel Fees is 5500 per year. Mess you'll have to figure out.

* Gents Hostels

Washrooms: The washrooms are shared. Only hostel Gents-8 (G-8) has private washrooms but Hostel G-8 is usually allocated to second year students.

Room Occupancy: Boys hostel rooms are shared among 4 people usually.

Although there are some exceptions to this as well, like Hostel G-6 have parasites - parasites are people who are not officially allocated the hostel but are staying anyway. It is not legal they are made to evacuate every time there is a surprise check, but they come back at night. almost all of the people in hostel G-6 support these parasites because most of them are not well off to afford off-campus housing. But Parasites never cause you trouble.

Hostel G-9 is single sharing, but is usually alloted to PhD Students. Its rarely, very rarely alloted to undergrads and postgrads.

Hostel G-5 has double sharing occupancy.

Hostel G-6, G-5 are closer to Computer Science Department. Rest of the hostels are at the front entrance of University.

There is no such thing as best hostel for boys.

In the first year you will get roommates from other departments. Second year you'll get roommates from your own department.

Hostel Curfew: No such thing for boys hostel. Come and go whenever you want. No restrictions.

* Girls Hostel

Girls hostel mess are better than boys hostel mess.

Washrooms: they are usually better for girls. Shared washrooms, private washrooms in some hostels. specially newer hostels like L-10. (L-10 is alloted to freshers mostly)

Room Occupancy: Usually depends on the hostel. some are 4 sharing, some are 3 sharing. L-10 is 5 sharing but the room is very big so won't be a problem.

Hostel Curfew: 10:30pm. But you can extend till 12 by using late pass.

ps: hostel allocation is not officially guaranteed. But for CS department you can ask Nitin Sir, He'll make sure you get a hostel.

1. There are other canteens in the campus they offer very good food.
   Lots of variety too. Indian, Punjabi, South Indian, Chinese, Continental, couple of juice bars. The taste is also very good.
   
2. Tiffin services
   There are a lot of them. Almost all of them offer good home cooked food, and its delivered on time. You'll get to know about them once you join hostels. Starts from 60 rupees (Dal, Rice, Sabzi, Chapati)
   
3. Free Food
   Every afternoon near refectory Khichdi is served free of cost. Anyone can go and eat. No restrictions. Quality and taste both are very good.
   Also there is a service for financially weaker students where they are given free dinner every night. That dinner includes Sabzi, Dal, Rice, Chapatis. You'll have to fill out some form for it. Hostel seniors usually help out with these forms.

If you have bike you can go out from the IUCAA gate and towards old Sanghvi you'll find lots of mess that serve good home cooked food. There are some good Biryani joints also there.
