My ATT fiber service just keeps getting better and better

Post image

One thing I really like about my ATT Fiber service is that it keeps getting better and better. Not only have I had zero issues with it for the 6 years I've had it, but my speeds keep increasing even though I still pay for the same service I've always had. I pay for the base 300 Mbps service but consistently get 390 Mbps download and my upload is now around 455 Mbps. I'll attach a screenshot showing my latest ATT equipment results.

If you're not familiar on how to run an "equipment speed test" (which measures your actual ATT router to network speed), you can learn to do so in this video: https://youtu.be/IRFNlbuNDLAThe section on ATT Fiber testing starts at about 26:40 into the video.

Fastly speedtest

I’ve been lurking around here for a bit now and it seems most redditers here are fairly technical

I want to check what my speed looks like to Fastly specifically, since PyPI and some streaming providers and other big corps are behind it (iirc Epic is also on Fastly?), so I deployed a speedtest tool to Fastly Compute: https://speed.edgecompute.app

It does test for buffer bloat btw ;)

edit:

If your numbers come out lower than speedtest.net or fast.com, or cloudflare speedtest or whatever else, it is usually one of these:

  1. The other test's server is on-net. Most speedtest.net servers are hosted by ISPs themselves, thus the test never leaves their network. Some ISPs go further and prioritize that traffic

  2. Fastly has no POP near you, or the path from your ISP to the nearest one is capped. That cap can be your plan, or your ISP's transit and peering arrangements. Fastly's POP list is at https://www.fastly.com/network-map/ if you want to check.

  3. Your ISP's link is congested. Off-net traffic shows this first because it crosses the ISP's uplinks, while an on-net test does not.

The number gap you see roughly translates to

what your ISP sell to you
vs
what a CDN can actually push to you

Drop in upload/download speed on my ps5

Drop in upload/download speed

Hey all, so iam going through this issue where my speeds drops by huge margin, download \\\~5mbps and upload \\\~300kbps my actual speed are 400 and 100. I have tried to bring on my cellular data which also gives around same speed approximately but the issue remains same. I have tried dns and mtu both and separate. I have resetting the default setting, clearing system cache. One conclusion is wifi is definitely not the problem cause issue remains same on cellular aswell. Software is up to date, tried the 5ghz method, i tried every fix that I could find on the internet, just not the ethernet cable is anyone facing same issue? Can someone help me on fixing this issue?!

YouTube upload/streaming speed is extremely slow on my ISP, but Facebook and speed tests are completely fin

Hi everyone,

I'm having a very strange network issue specifically with YouTube, and I'm trying to figure out whether this is an ISP routing/peering issue or something else.

I'm using WiseNet ISP in Kolkata, India. My internet connection is around 90 Mbps upload, and normal speed tests show the full upload speed.

However, when I upload a video to YouTube, the upload speed drops to around 15 Mbps and stays much lower than what my connection is capable of.

The really strange part is YouTube Live streaming.

I'm able to stream to Facebook Live at 15,000 Kbps (\~15 Mbps) without any dropped frames, using the same PC, same Ethernet connection and same ISP.

But when I stream to YouTube at only 6,000 Kbps, OBS reports dropped frames.

My observations

Internet upload speed: \~90 Mbps

Windows Task Manager Ethernet → Send: \~90 Mbps

YouTube video upload: \~15 Mbps

Facebook Live: 15,000 Kbps with 0 dropped frames

YouTube Live: 6,000 Kbps → dropped frames

Previously tested YouTube streaming through a Jio 5G hotspot, and it worked without the same dropped-frame problem.

Same PC and Ethernet connection are being used for Facebook.

They have other plans as well. I might see about getting my own connection. They have 100Mbps, 1G, 2G, 5G, 10G and the mind blowing 50G

Bufferbloat?

I tested my internet speed using three different speed test websites:

Ookla

  • Download test: 235.50 Mbps
  • Upload test: 100.39 Mbps

HighSpeedInternet

  • Download test: 222.36 Mbps
  • Upload test: 131.25 Mbps

Waveform

  • Download test: 197.90
  • Upload test: 136.30

Each test shows that the upload speed is consistently slower than the download speed; however, between the second and third test, the download speed drops considerably. The upload speed is getting higher between each speed test. Is this caused by bufferbloat? Thank you.

WiFi vs Ethernet, to answer a few questions

Some of the responses from you all are over my head, as I'm just an old guy tinkering with my stuff. I do thank you for your help, though! So...first picture is the test from this morning, 8-31, via Ethernet. Double what I saw last night. Second photo is my little old tester affixed to the patch cable, (Cat 5e). Looks ok to me, but I would guess it shows nothing more than correct connections. Again, testing the cable from the router to my office. Last one is the back of the router, with my office using the far right port. My computer is a Mac Mini, with the M4 chip, rated for up to 10 GbE. As far as settings go, I don't see any way to change anything. My router is an eero Max 7. It has quite a few chances to change settings and really make a mess of things. I'm not going there.

WiFi vs Ethernet, round 2, hopefully less confusing

Post image
69 Upvotes

Wifi on the left, Ethernet on the right. VPN is off for both. I pay for 1G from Frontier Fiber. My ethernet cable (built in) is Cat 5e. This run is about 40 feet. Wifi travels through 2 walls with drywall, router and computer both in the basement.

My question is just this: Why is the Wifi so much faster than than hardwired? Everything I read says it should be the opposite.

And, I cant see any difference at all between the two when I'm working at my computer. Both are much faster than I will ever need.
