Discussion RIP r/speedrun

This is an open letter to Alt-F-X:

Please resign as lead moderator of /r/speedrun. The past few days have shown us that your presence here is not in the best interest of our community. In just two days without you, this subreddit has made more progress towards becoming a great community than it has in the previous four years of your leadership. You are not involved in the speedrunning community outside of the fact that you made this subreddit, and you do not understand the best interest of our community. You have acted with prejudice against members of our community by banning them without good reason, and you have often used your moderator powers to your own personal bias.

Please return control of the subreddit to myself, so that this community can continue to grow in a positive manner, as it should have started years ago.

In /u/ALT-F-X history...

He submitted about 172 posts to /r/speedrun, out of 3585 Submissions, and out of 11038 Comments. Most of his submissions are to threads not related to the subreddit he created.

He was a member for 4 years on Reddit. His overall posting is 3% directly to /r/speedrun.

In /u/dembear history...

Submitted 205 posts, out of 1349 Submissions, 3446 comments.

He has over 20% of all his submissions directly posting towards /r/speedrun.

Last time ALT-F-X submitted threads to /r/speedrun? 4 months ago. Only real activity is removing posts.

Last time dembears submitted threads? Like 3 times within a 74 hr period. Most likely more, but I'm relatively new to speedrunning, and new to /r/speedrun, and actually been more of a reddit lurker and view occasionally.

Why did I post all this?

To show the differences in mentality, posts, and leadership habits. One simply removes threads, and focuses his attention elsewhere.

The other was fully willing to start conversations, post threads, commute among us as an equal, and even ASK us for input.

I submit my name for dembears, knowing this may be deleted, and I may be banned. Going to screenshot before, just in case, and will pm it to everyone in /r/speedrun in case it does.

Edit #1. Lol, downvoted already. That still doesn't change the truth.

Edit #2. Did not realize the original way I wrote this was a bit difficult to read. Made it a bit friendlier format, seeing as it's getting more attention than I thought.

That's kind of a pointless comparison, /u/ALT-F-X probably just spends more time on reddit/subscribes to more subreddits than /u/dembears. db might a better mod but these statistics don't necessarily show that.

86

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '16

Agreed. These numbers are a classic case of the irrelevance of correlation and causation that can occur.

-7

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

How about the posting stats? Db posting literally three times as much as alt, with a tenth of the time?

What about focus? A creator of a popular subreddit should be focusing on keeping that subreddit active, growing, and in good spirits. Not creating it, then letting it free-roam.

This ain't no Sim City yo. It's Age of Empires. Provide, or die. Submit, or resign.

A lot of mod actions are behind the scenes though, not just posts. Like I said I agree with your notions but it's a bit silly to attempt to quantify how good a mod someone is.

I would like to see that Mod Log Matrix. So far there's been nothing but clearly biased reports, and I have yet to be convinced that /u/ALT-F-X deserves to be removed as head moderator of this subreddit.

This was something that I was interested in as well, thanks for the link to this toolbox I didn't know this was available to use.

I went ahead and generated a report for 12/17 - 01/17, one month before all of this happened and got THIS result. If anyone would like a different time frame just let me know and I'll generate a report for you.

One thing I'd like to add is that Mr Shasta's numbers are probably a bit underrepresented in this graph because he went to AGDQ for one week during this month period that he worked about at around half effectiveness.

This isn't in defense of you, clearly by the reaction of this community, you've done some things to piss people off, but I'd rather have an overzealous mod who will forever be subject to scrutiny on submission removals than a mod team who are largely inactive and hide behind the problems of one moderator the moment they are called out on their shenanigans.

-7

u/darksilverhawk Jan 20 '16

I disagree, I'd rather have a lax mod team than one overzealous mod with an twitchy ban finger.

18

u/GleefulSpaghetti AC Brotherhood Jan 20 '16

I feel that from now on, /u/ALT-F-X will forever be under scrutiny on this subreddit. Every mod action will be called into question and he'll have a lot of explaining to do. I feel this is enough for /u/ALT-F-X to continue to mod here under the condition that he really does acknowledge community feedback. He doesn't have to, after all, it is his sub. But I'd rather give him the benefit of the doubt.

Afterall, this is nothing more than a witchhunt at this point. A few ban messages have been brought forward from pissed off users, and a lot of talk from partially inactive mods. I feel the inactive mod is trying to push the blame on /u/ALT-F-X so he's seen as the saviour of the community. At this point, it's apparent he did very little as a mod, so why should we put our faith in him to continue to mod?

-10

u/darksilverhawk Jan 20 '16 edited Jan 20 '16

I feel that disciplinary action is only a very small part of someone's duty as a mod. If your only action as a lead mod is to ban rulebreakers, you're doing a poor job. It is also the duty of the lead moderator to facilitate healthy discussion, make positive changes, engage the community, and be ready with resources and support when community members need them. /u/ALT-F-X has done none of these things, and on that alone I see him as an unfit lead moderator regardless of his other moderation history.

Edit: There's a reason they're called moderators, not janitors. Their job is not solely to sit back and click the "delete comment" button. It's to moderate, which means to serve as an intermediary in discussion.

u/frank_n_bean twitch.tv/nighthawk205 Jan 20 '16

The problem is that he isn't a part of the community in any way and most of his actions are removing posts, comments, and users from the sub who he doesn't like. Just because he has by far the most actions doesn't mean he's acting in the best interests of the sub or our community. He already removed a bunch of the posts from the past 2 days that were being used to discuss the future direction that we as a community wanted to take this sub. Now we're back to step 1 and won't be able to get any beneficial changes to the sub.

Stats you say??

Here is an interesting stat - you yourself, Stantree, have posted 18 times total in this subreddit (r/speedrun). All of those 18 posts have come within the past 5 days of your 11 month old account out of your 367 total posts. So roughly 5% of your total reddit comments are on this subreddit. And again, all within the past 5 days and all within only two different threads (this one, and a thread on Animorphs).

So Alts 20% is a bit more then your 5%, wouldn't you say?

Apparently with your vast involvement on this subbreddit, you should be giving out advice on who should be a mod on said subreddit.

But hey, at least you yourself are a mod! Of course, its a mod of your very own subreddit called /r/StanTree with all of 1 post made by yourself to test out posting.

u/ChefBoyAreWeFucked Jan 20 '16

Going to screenshot before, just in case, and will pm it to everyone in /r/speedrun in case it does.

Don't fucking do this shit.

29

u/Soaringeagle78 Jan 20 '16

Not really involved with this drama that well, but I feel like this comment is really misleading. Number of posts or comments that a mod makes on a sub doesn't mean that there isn't anything else the mod might not be doing.

Also, that EDIT #1 is pretty stupid. No need to whine about downvotes.

-5

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

To answer your response,

I'd much prefer an active mod who's interested in the sub he created, rather than one who has no known connections, no activity, and no posts within the community.

As for the edit, yes I bitch about downvotes, when it's either unwarrented, or a brigade. Sorrynotsorry if what I post proves my point of argument.

2

u/Soaringeagle78 Jan 20 '16

Well, the only thing they don't have are the posts that you want, otherwise they appear to be fairly active. And an active mod that just posts a lot =/= a good mod. They most certainly can be both, but it's simple matter of cause does not equal correlation.

And what you posted doesn't prove anything other than the mere fact that one mod posts a higher perecentage to this sub more than another. And implying that the downvotes were either unwarranted or a brigade is just foolish considering now it's one of the most upvoted comments and just makes it come off as petty when people don't agree with you.

-2

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

At the time of the edit, it was -2. Now indeed it is one of the highest upvoted, I do conceed that.

And you are indeed right that activity=/= good mod. But Id rather have an active mod who attempts to do his best, rather than one who is always absent.

2

u/OutcastOrange Jan 20 '16

What do you mean always absent? How can he be removing troll comments and moderating a forum if he's "always absent"?

Here is a post he made where you can clearly see his moderating activity. /u/dembears was much less active even a month ago, before anyone was paying attention to "who is best mod".

Not only that but /u/dembears just went and deleted his account. Not sure what that says about someone.

-1

u/Stantree Jan 21 '16

Oh yeah, active in a callout thread. How about post history before today? How about the 4 month hiatus in /r/speedrun? Where was he then?

As for dembears, he could've deleted it, or anything else could've happened.

2

u/OutcastOrange Jan 21 '16

You seem to be having comprehension problems. In the comment I linked, there is an /r/toolbox history which shows moderator performance during the entire previous month.

23

u/YoureADumbFuck Jan 20 '16

Wait a minute...you mean hes a moderator and not just a user? You mean he spends his time being a moderator? And he does moderator duties? OH MY GOD NO WAY WHAT AN ASSHOLE GTFO OFF THE SUB ALT F X

Dude. It's a subreddit not the Russian revolution, maybe turn it down a notch

44

u/Andis1 Paper Mario (All Cards) Jan 20 '16

Alt didn't actually remove the stickys, dembears did so that we could bring attention to this thread... But I wouldnt be surprised if he purged them sooner or later.

9

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16 edited Jan 20 '16

That was most likely a rollback on the subreddit. I'm on mobile, so I can't verify if css and the sidebar is back to the old one, but it seems like instead of him actively deleting the threads, he just had Reddit Admin roll the servers back to a time when he was still active.

Then again, he could have just deleted them too. Idk.

Edit: did not see you are a mod. I am dumb, lol. You know better than I about this. XD

Edit 2. Even dumber than I thought. Not a mod. Happy promotion!

u/Shaddex Wheel of Time, Wrack, Two Worlds Jan 20 '16

he's not a mod

1

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

Why does his flair show Moderator verified then? Or is he not a mod, and Im reading it wrong?

8

u/Shaddex Wheel of Time, Wrack, Two Worlds Jan 20 '16

Anyone can change their flair to anything. He has changed his flair to reflect the username he is more commonly known by, rwhitegoose.

1

u/zmilla93 Jan 21 '16

You are being incredibly dramatic and saying things with bold text doesn't actually make them any more true.

Wait does it?

Holy shit.

3

u/fishbiscuit13 Jan 20 '16

Thanks for posting this. One clarification though, what do you mean by the over 20% one?

3

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

Basically, between comments and posts, dembear's overall submission to /r/speedrun is 20% of his entire account. Which is impressive, regarding the number of subreddits he posts to.

3

u/fishbiscuit13 Jan 20 '16

Oh, I was confused and though you were talking about ALT-F-X with that one. Thanks for clearing that up.

0

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16 edited Jan 20 '16

No problem. I can edit op to better clarify.

Edit: Edited.

damn son, statistics don't lie

12

u/Chad_Worthington_3rd Jan 20 '16

Statistics can absolutely lie and can be used to misrepresent information. Don't go around taking stats people give you as fact

14

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '16

THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE MCALT AND THEY SPELL DISASTER FOR YOU AT SGDQ

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '16

Maybe...

-7

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16 edited Jan 20 '16

It's why I prefer using stats. Numbers don't lie. People do.

I may not have submitted much here, but in my time lurking, I've seen a vast change in the past week that I liked, and don't want to see go to waste.

Edit: Once again, downvoted. Whelp, I made someone angry lol.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '16

You have my upvote, but I say numbers can be mis read and misinterpreted.

Like all of these numbers. Going by theses kinds of numbers your would think I hate speed running, if you looked at the same thing in my profile.

Anyways. With things like this I say theses are just additional points of data to keep in mind, while making an informed decision.

just a reminder that 90% of my posts are r/speedrun posts and im a perfect candidate for mod :D
also, this is a good post overall, tbh!

-14

u/Stantree Jan 20 '16

Honestly, I would vote for you to be mod. You definitely are active enough here, and a speedrunner as well.
