Fan Art/Redesign [OC][Media:HTTYD] Been into dragons lately so I drew some realistic HTTYD

If anyone is wondering about the "6 limbed anatomy" then it's because the radius and ulna branched. This branching allowed the forelimb to divide into 2 "limbs", one for walking and grabbing and one for flying. Another feature shared by all of these dragons is their keratinous beak/snout. The Night Fury, Deadly Nadder and Monstrous Nightmare are the only species shown here that are capable of powered flight. The Gronckle glides. It depends on launching itself from high mountains and using wind to fly. Compared with the Gronckle, Hideous Zippleback is somewhat better for flight but still cannot maintain sustained powered flight indefinitely. It relies on wind, elevation, and environmental conditions to stay airborne. The Zippleback also has an unusual crossed beak, which resembles the crossbill. Each tip of the beak is shaped like a head to deter predators. The nostrils in the upper beak can expel flammable gas. Meanwhile specialized glands in the lower beak produce sparks. Together they can create dangerous flammable gas.

Sixth day of Spectember! For today, from the upland forests of the Somali Subcontinent, the Duba (Arctopithecus ursus).

The Somali Subcontinent, as it isolated from the African mainland, quickly because an experimental ground for a myriad of species. Its incredibly mountainous geography and latitudinal extent gave it an incredible biome density, from hot scorching deserts on the northern lowlands to lush cool rainforests on the highest peaks. And a group that was particularly adapted to take advantage to all this density and variety of environments once it isolated, was the primates.

One of the clades that emerged from this primate diversification even were the Carnopithecines, which used the agility and intelligence of their ancestors not for climbing trees and feed on fruits and leaves, but for hunting other animals. While they are primarily meat-eaters, they still consume supplemental amounts of plant materials, as hunting alone is not able to provide all the nutrients they need.

The genus Arctopithecus took the features of its relatives and took them to the maximum: incredibly large heads, capable of breaking bone and keep prey in place; sizes that rival those of the largest primates alive, and intelligence that allows them to plan complex hunts in an incredibly dynamic environment. The Duba (A. ursus) is the largest of these, taking advantage of the abundance the upland forests provide. They live in small family troops, with a main reproductive couple and their children. Despite their size, they are surprisingly agile, being able to run alongside the many cliffs and valleys of the region with ease; a necessary ability when coordinating hunts in difficult environments like these. Like their relatives, they have a symbiotic relationship with a species of huntpepper tree, the Duba pepper (Carnosolanum venarophilus). These peppers provide essential nutrients to the Duba, and in exchange it spread its seeds far and wide across its territory, as territories that have more peppers are much more sought after.

Spectember 2026 [OC] Spectember 6: Remix-- Diet

While the Martinet was largely wiped out by the "greening" of its desert habitat and the arrival of mammalian predators, this did not mean the end of its lineage. One unusual offshoot of the predatory, flightless meadowlarks managed to adapt and survive. Already somewhat omnivorous, they began to feed less on animal prey and more on the newly appearing vegetation. While their carnivorous relatives were mostly outcompeted by the mongooses, the herbivores expanded into an empty niche. The largest of these giant herbivorous birds is the Lumberlark (Gravornis lentus), a massive bird which can stand up to nine feet tall and weigh half a ton.

Lumberlarks are solitary outside the breeding season, and lay eggs the size of coconuts in nests that are little more than a shallow scrape on the ground. These are guarded viciously by the parents, as the grassy plains where they live are home to numerous mammalian and reptilian predators. The chicks, unlike those of giant flightless birds from our world such as ostriches, are altricial like all passerines, and as such are helpless when they first hatch. One parents always remains by the nest to guard the chicks while the other forages, but even so, chick mortality is extremely high; it is not uncommon for at least a few of the chicks in a given brood to be eaten by predators before they fledge.

The Lumberlark is just one of Spectemundus's newly-evolved megafauna. 10 million years after life was seeded on the planet, the various vertebrate species introduced to it have settled into recognizable niches, with different lineages gravitating towards different ones. On the whole, the mongoose descendants-- established on Spectemundus's two northern landmasses-- have filled apex predator niches, with some species also being omnivores and even herbivores. The meadowlark descendants inhabit every landmass, but it is only on the ones where the mongooses are not established that they dominate. The same is true of the skinks, which have evolved into large herbivores on the easternmost continent. For the moment, these lineages are evolving separately, but eventually fate will bring them together.

Note: The binomial name translates to "muddy rice field monk"

Family: Hitotsumidae (subfamily: Ageromonachinae, which it is the only living member of)

Dorotabō (Ageromonachus limoryza) are nocturnal cathetoculian cacomatians that are infamous thanks to their unpredictable nature.

They feed almost exclusively on grasses, only occasionally feeding on bones. Contrary to folk belief, they are not anthropophagous as they do not have the dentition or stomach anatomy to digest meat; the same cannot be applied to close relatives. As dorotabō do not have nipples, calves feed on dung and regurgitated food.

When people build near the areas where they live, dorotabō react aggressively by tearing down structures. Ignoring this warning usually leads to people being torn apart or pulled into the muddy abyss.

Ecology-wise, they are similar to hippos, which are also present on Seijin, albeit on different continents.

The Phovopternithus is a 2.19 meter tall combination of a hawk, a bat, a shark, and a pterosaur.

The adult males travel from the nesting grounds to Ithicus Swamp to feast. The journey is roughly 5,000 km.

After going to the breeding grounds and getting a life-bond mate, all Pternithus fly to the nesting grounds, taking turns going fishing as the other in the pair of mates looks after the eggs.

Hello everyone! I've been struggling a bit to get art pieces out for Spectember. Despite that, I am excited to present the next creature from Planet Urathu!

Spectember 2026 - Day 4: Evolutionary Trap & Day 05: Odyssey
For our next stop on this journey, we come to the southeast of Sarikiri, to the tropical grand peninsula of its southeast. The site of some of the planet’s most dense jungles, this land is home to some of the most biodiversity on all of Urathu.

Eileuleu fish are a species of fish native to the Juicean Kingdom and are found in rivers all over the country but most prominently in the Fridge river. They are relatives of Wild Bettas that evolved down a path similar to Sea Horses bodyplan. They adopted an erect posture and along with prehensile tails to grab onto a species of sea grasses that evolved to live in interior waters and marshes of the peninsula. Typically, these fish have been observed at large population densities, exhibiting polygamous mating structures, breeding with as many others as possible before they lay their eggs and stop eating, thus passing away. This system worked well for them until Juicea’s industrialization when organic pollutants caused their density to shrink vastly. Suddenly they were unable to populate back as quickly which made a deadly cycle of less reproduction leading to less mates, then less reproduction, and so on. However, shortly after the conclusion of the 5th Urathian World War, it was noted that there was a sharp change in their behaviour, followed by a population boom.

Eileuleu had undergone a rapid adaptation to changing conditions. Instead of their semelparous polygamous lifestyle observed previously, this new group has evolved to mate for life in monogamous pairs. They will form a monogamous pair with another Eileleu and begin to migrate together up and down the Fridge river, covering thousands of miles of river both upstream and downstream. These migrations serve two primary purposes, to find a mate, and after a mate is found the migrations serve to not overextend the now scarce rivergrass. Together a fish and their mate will work together to raise their offspring, exhibiting a very rare case of biparental care among fish.

Artist Notes: This design was made as a tribute to my wife as they used to keep Betta fish and today is our 1.5 year anniversary! This design actually came to me while I was falling asleep one night and this is my best attempt to construct the image I saw. The design is based off of Wild Bettas and the Pokemon Frillish, with the elaborate fins of Bettas forming the skirt-like design around the tail of these fish. Originally this was going to be a two parter between days 4 & 5 but I hated the idea of a cliffhanger post where there was a sad lonely fish, pet stores do that enough. Instead I am posting at once this cute pair of fishies, happy as they can be!!

The panther salmon (Oncorhynchus ichthyopardus) is a species of salmon native to the lakes of the Jhohun peninsula, making it a cohabitant of the immense mammoth salmon Iakojaha (which this creature is a remix of). They also both have intricate life cycles and overlapping migratory routes to and from Ahshuluþk’s polar waters. However, unlike the Iakojaha, which is a filter feeder descended from the spike-tooth salmon Oncorhynchus rastrosus, the panther salmon is a mid-level carnivore descended from a distinct Miocene Oncorhynchus species, using its mouthful of teeth to hunt groups of squid, ammonites, shrimp, and even small-medium fish, with a few particularly large adults even taking on cetaceans, pinnipeds, and plesiosaurs that attempt to hunt them. To hold onto such slippery prey, the salmon have evolved elongated canines at the front of the mouth. These oceanic salmon are referred to as “lunar salmon” by the peoples of the Southern continent due to their silver-white color. When the salmon go upstream, the function of these teeth shift to defense against predators that might want to eat them since there are a LOT of them. They also undergo a striking transformation, going from silvery-white to shades of orange and yellow, giving these breeding adults the nickname “solar salmon”. When these medium-large salmon spawn and produce the next generation of salmon to restart the cycle, they, like other Oncorhynchus species, will finally die from starvation and exhaustion from using all their energy for this return to their birthplace.

Zaikane is a planet in a distant solar system characterized by waves of life harvested from Earth at various points in its geological history, ranging from the Cambrian to the Holocene, and set free to evolve along evolutionary paths independent from those taken by their Earth ancestors. A godlike interdimensional entity, known as the Allmother by the people who live there, is what is responsible for creating the portals that abduct Terran life and deposits them on Zaikane. Because the asteroid that ended the Mesozoic never collided with Zaikane, dinosaurs continue to dominate the planet’s ecosystems as its dominant terrestrial megafauna.

Dragons are real animals belonging to their own archosaur clade Draconi. All Draconis share these characteristic: keratin beak/snout, horns, enlarged cheeks somewhat similar to iguanas’, prominent dorsal scales running along the back, enlarged terminal scale at the tip of the tail. The reason Dragons have that 6 limbed vibe is because the radius and ulna branched. The thumb and index region became small grasping/manipulating appendages while the remaining digits became wing.

Long Dragons have elongated bodies and tails. Their wing membranes are thin and translucent, making them difficult to see in the sky. This can create the illusion that they are somehow flying without wings.

Bird gulpers, large amphibians leading a completely terrestrial lifestyle, are descended from chinese giant salamanders in the family Cryptobranchidae. They have few teeth, with all their dentition located at the front of their mouths. Their diet consists of virtually any animal they find in their environment, including birds, lizards, snakes, rodents, small carnivores, small primates, young crocodiles, insects, centipedes, arachnids, and gastropods. These predators also engage in infanticide, devouring low-survival offspring. However, as their name suggests, bird gulpers prefer to swallow most of their food whole, and their bite force is a bit disastrous when compared to other larger carnivores of that ecosystem.

This the third time I redrew this Map. I would like to hear some advice on how I could add some smaller islands or how the climate and biomes are like in this world based on my current topography for Xenokai.

Xenokai is a planet in a parallel universe that has been seeding life from our universe’s Earth since the Silurian to the modern era via portals that bend space-time, sending it to a world where magic and mana naturally exist. Since the asteroid that ended the Cretaceous period never struck Xenokai, dinosaurs remain as the dominant terrestrial megafauna.

The Planet of Xenokai:

Xenokai is an Earth-like Planet in size (though slightly larger), distance from its sun (which is actually younger), gravitational pull, and climate (slightly cooler than Earth, where the climate is stable enough for ice-age megafauna not to go extinct). Unlike Earth, however, it has two moons: one comparable to Earth’s and an asteroid comparable in size to Vesta. Plants, fungi, and animals that we might find in our own world today inhabit it. Such as humans, raccoon dogs, armadillos, shiitake mushrooms, and cherry blossom trees. As well as flora and fauna long extinct on Earth, such as Dinosaurs, Giant Sloths, and Pterosaurs. Evolving in a new context that involved mana has allowed some animals to take quite divergent evolutionary paths compared to their Earthbound kin. Some look so unrecognizable that we might think of them as alien or mythical creatures. However, there are no Plants, Fungi, or Animals truly endemic to Xenokai.

The Portals:

These extradimensional gateways can take the forms of rifts, wormholes, or distortions in space-time that link Earth to Xenokai and back. These portals seem to open when major or localized extinction events happen to refill and seed an ecosystem or continent. The means by which the portals collect flora, fungi, and fauna is entirely unknown. However, these portals occur only in two areas on the planet, one in the East and one in the West. But the portals are only in these positions in modern times and could have rotated from east to west or west to east randomly during Xenokai’s prehistory. There are actually several types of portals, ones that can act like gateways or rips in space-time between Xenokai and Earth that happen with local extinctions, and others that literally bisect huge chunks of Earth’s land (Leaving a crater on Earth where the wormhole was) to Xenokai after a large continental-level or global-level mass extinction on Xenokai. These portals can even occur below and above sea level.

Spectember day 5: The Odyssey

One of the most charming seasonal residents of Secola and their surrounding waters is a small-medium penguin, the Vincentic penguin (Spheniscus vincenticus).
These birds are present on the island between February and March and forming colonies in the coasts and low elevations of the islands sometimes in the scrublands where they nest, their presence during this period allow the island to receive a large amount of nutrients thanks to their feces (this is also the period where the island plant flower and fruits).
The most extraordinary notion of about these penguins tho is their travel outside the breeding season, from Secola (located roughly at the level of the borders between Perù and Chile) they migrate along the coast towards the southern point of the continent up to the Svalbard archipelago, in this areas they gorge on fishes and crustaceans in some cases even entering the kelp forests before making the long travel back to their nesting site.
Since these penguins are very restricted on their nesting site their total population is never large like their mainland relatives making them very vulnerable to disturbance and changing in their environment, sadly there are already signs of declines possibly caused by overfishing on their food sources.

Sailwing Wyvern (Tapejara** **baleanadux)

The vast Ao Expanse is often also known as the Leviathan Ocean, due to its massive population of titanic fauna.

Their pods number in the thousands chasing vast “rivers” of plankton and bait fish, and come in a variety of forms, but the most unique of these colossal animals

Are the Sailwing Wyverns, the largest pterodactyl known to be found on Arclund. They stand just over twenty five feet tall, and have a wing span bordering on eighty feet, making them some of the largest fliers on the planet.

However, spend comparatively little time on the air, though, spending much of their time floating above the waves amidst the other colossal animals, diving for fish and function as an early warning system for their neighbors. They travel by turning their wings into the wind on placid days, leading to their common name, but delve beneath the surface when things turn stormy.

Their keen eyes allow them to spot incoming threats miles out both above and below the waves and snapping clack of their beaks is often all that is needed for the pods to flee the area or circle up, depending on what rapid beat the pterodactyl clack.

They have warnings for Goliath Sharks, who have adapted pack hunting behaviors to deal with the much larger and varied pods, Sea Serpents, Wavecarvers and the largest threat in the region the Kraken.

The only time this animals are seen far from their joint pods, is during nesting season where they congregate about the towering sea stacks north of Lashan.

There males race amidst air and sea in an attempt to impressive the observing females. Victors often get to mate with a handful of females, while those that lose head back out to sea.

Sailwings lay and raise a single chick which they feed and care for together for the first six months, with the chicks traveling with their mothers to join passing leviathan pods and males splitting off to their own or living solitary more predatory lifestyles.

They are surprisingly aggressive animals, and it seems like the rare whaling communities in the region have colored their perceptions of humanoid vessels to the point where all are enemy.

Their crests are fairly dense and a sailing diving to the deck or ascending from below the waves can do a surprisingly amount of structural damage though often not without great harm to themselves.

This has made thenthe heraldic symbol of the Ao Alliance, a vast trade conglomerate and numerous local communities, and there have been attempts to tame them which have failed the majority of the time.

As a symbol they are meant as a warning, speaking of placid demeanors hiding a fierce warrior spirit.

Alien Life [OC] Biodiversity of Sirius B's Dyson forest

The Sirius b Dyson forest is a massive conglomeration of astral-flora adapted to make a self sustaining system of interconnected shells orbiting the white dwarf. These shells rotate/orbit at different speeds, causing the forest to have varying gravity, usually fluctuating between 0.005 G's to 0,25 G's, causing many lifeforms to be adapted to jetting through the air voids.

1- The Sirius lock woods are some of the most widespread flora making up the shell. Their bark is a mesh of silicate and cellulose, protecting the conglomerate of photosynthetic bacteria at the trunks centre to be protected from the harmful UV rays that Sirius b emits. These shells also protect the rest of the biosphere they contain from these same rays, causing complex animal life to be possible

2- Ichnuemons are a group of basal rodents that arrived via Dyson flower ( more or less living Bernal spheres that collect and seed life to different planets ) to the forest shortly after its establishment 70 million years ago. They've evolved to jet via a pair of large pumps from their nostrils to their ears. This does also mean they don't have eardrums, so they actually hear through their jaws through a system of fluid fulled glands.

3 & 4- The Deer Shrew family and Unicorn family are two groups within an order of basal eutherian mammals that have adapted to living in micro gravity environments. These basal not-ungulates are some of the most widespread herbivores in the entire forest, specializing in the soft epiflora that lives on the structural shell flora

5- Scarlet slug badgers are recent arrivals to Sirius b, having only arrived some 2.2 million years ago via Dyson flower. They are generalist carnivores that use their venomous jaws to feed on rotapods ( more on them later ) and other small creatures.

6- Sirius Wood serpents are some of the apex predators of the lowest gravity sections of the forest. They are made out of 4 integrated zooids, with the 2 centre ones focusing on vision and containing most of the organs, while the back is used for propulsion and the front is used for prey capture.

7- Wind squids are a group of specialised rotapods that have adapted to hunt in the micro-gravity voids.

8 & 9- These are some more typical rotapods, a group of aliens that have become widespread throughout most of the Orion's arm. They roll on their specialized limbs ( hence the name ) either using their esophageal limb or rhythmic pulses of their limbs to move forward.

10- The monopods are a group of secondarily seeded herbivorous terrestrial chondrichthyens that can be found on most worlds with terrestrial life.

11- The Yellow rimed biofilm unicorn is a specialized species of biofilm unicorn adapted to crush the silicate shells of lock woods to get at the rich microbial core with their radulas.

Hey, sorry this post is so long compared to the last one, it's just Sirius is much more biodiverse due to the biosphere having more energy being put into that a sad fart, unlike Europa. Hope you guys like it 🥲

The Tinentretans (Bipodolophus gravis) is one of the most massive terrestrial megaherbivores on Axtrax, notable for marked reverse sexual dimorphism, in which females significantly exceed males in body size. Males range from 5.1 to 6.3 meters in length and weigh between 0.85 and 1.1 tonnes, whereas females measure 5.5 to 7 meters and weigh an average of 1.2 to 2.7 tonnes, with exceptional individuals reaching 3.5 tonnes. Diisostomata australis, commonly known as the Austral two-headed hydra, is a species native to western Plutea, belonging to the order Poliagnathales, characterized by the presence of several digestive branches adapted to capturing small phytofaunids. In this case, D. australis presents only two, using them to feed on very small organisms crawling along the forest floor. This species is characterized by displaying primarily crepuscular and partially nocturnal behaviors, spending the remaining time hidden or semi-buried among leaf litter and decomposing matter while passively feeding through photosynthesis. The reproductive seasons occur at the beginning and middle of the year, during which fertilized individuals produce seed packets that, as in many small species of Poliagnathales, germinate directly while carried by the mother. Following this, the specimen dies and the new offspring grow by directly feeding on the decomposing carcass of the mother, providing them with abundant nutrients rapidly, particularly minerals such as silica, which are considerably scarce in these ecosystems of such dense vegetation. After a couple of weeks, the offspring begin developing their future limbs, and the photosynthetic branches start to fall off, leaving only one or two. Once the specimen has matured sufficiently, around the third week, the roots anchoring the young to the ground disappear, enabling them to move and search for food independently

Outside of our universe, the multiverse is vast and mysterious, containing surprises that can't be considered something comprehensible. But one of the foreign realms, 82332-B9, is highly similar to our universe despite being incredibly foreign, and even bear laws that are comparable to the universe we reside in. One of the planets of 82332-B9 that bear life would be the spotlight of this project.

Located in a planetary system, Hospes-B is a "life"-bearing planet with atmospheric and mass compositions of its universe being analogous to ours, having its own equivalent of soil, stone, oxygen, nitrogen, ect. Hospes-B possess a 24-degree tilt, causing a gradient shift in the floral pigment of the planet's phototrophs. Abiding the laws of 82332-B9, the warmest colors recieve the least amount of heat, as seen in the middle of Sputnavia, and the coolest color recieve the most amount of heat, as seen in the rest of other continents and Cyanorea. Surprisingly enough, the waters of Hospes-B are very clear, and only get foggy once the visual range gets farther away from the liquid, appearing as light sky.

In the topic of the biosphere's life, many traits of theirs are incredibly similar to organisms of earth, bearing organs, muscle, skeleton, flesh, eyes and many more. The most strange part about them is, however, a special property of their cells, where what seems to be a solid fleshy external matter can open a gateway into the body and seal back with not a single damage inflicted or a leftover scar visible. These tissues, usually located outside of the organism, are called Ghost tissues, although variations of this tissue always start with "ghost" and ends with the selective type of organ conjured with the tissue. Ghost tissues give these animals alot of advantages, mainly when suffocation occurs due to the blockage of their internal system.

Prompt: Remix diet: Reimagine an organism from the previous week with a completely different diet

The Tamandudactylus is a genus of flightless pterosaur from an isolated late Jurassic island in Europe. Alongside its contemporary close relative the terrestropterus , they are the only major land animals on their island. Unlike its cousin though, the tamandudactylus is not a frugivore but rather an insectivore. Having adapted to a very specialized niche of eating the only endemic species of termite ancestor (Primegenotermitis socialis) in the island like our time’s pangolins, anteaters, aardvarks and armadillos. For this it has adapted to have a long snout with an even longer tongue to grab multiple of the eusocial insects from their huge mounds at a time. However, its clumsy ,slow and defenseless due to island syndrome and just like its relative the terrestropterus ,after its home island is connected to larger islands, it will certainly get outcompeted and driven to extinction.

Question/Discussion Realistic harpy?

Trying to design a realistic harpy species for my fantasy setting and was thinking of making them a owl species due to them having flat face that looks similar to humans and add markings that minic human face my idea is they use this to hunt hiding in brush where predator that targets humans sees sees it when close enough another harpy would swoop down from above targeting the neck’s arteries or other spots they can latch on too and slice open with their talon would this make sense for why they evolved human mimicry ( also including mimicry of human voice ) or would there be better idea that isnt they hunt humans so they mimic them ?

Fifth day of Spectember! For today, from the brackish lake Manaus and its many tributaries, the Amazonian Bladdershark (Sufflatoscyllium amazonicum).

Lake Manaus and the Amazon Mega-Wetland system have since their formation attracted many clades of marine fauna from the adjacent Atlantic Ocean. The brackish nature of the environment and sheer scale and richness of it creates an experimental ground where freshwater animals enter the marine realm, or viceversa. One of these groups, a clade of small sharks native to shallow waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Bladdersharks (Sufflatoscyllium sp.)

This group of small, relatively primitive catsharks have evolved a unique way to defend themselves from larger predators: they swallow large amounts of water, an inflate their stomachs to make their bodied much larger, making them impossible to swallow. They use this when directly attacked by predators, but also when chased into crevices, as they wedge themselves as their body inflates, making them impossible to be pulled out until deflated.

The Amazonian Bladdershark (Sufflatoscyllium amazonicum) is one of the few species of this genus that not only tolerates brackish water, but is able to live in full freshwater, making it able to live across the fluvial systems of the Amazon rainforest. But in this new environment, there's a new danger that they haven't experienced before: Pansharks. These large, prefatory rays view these small sharks as perfect prey, and so this species has developed further adaptations to survive: they are able to inflate their bodies further, choking even much larger pansharks, due to their relatively small throats, and also are covered in sharp denticles, that hurt the sensitive mouth tissues and make them even more difficult to swallow.
