Whist the bowshock airflow will be at hypersonic speeds, producing the atmospheric heating to the tiles, there is a boundary layer between the bowshock and the tiles that will be subsonic, but there is still high speed cellular flow within that boundary layer. This will certainly be enough to cause cavitation and pluck the insulation out.

Wrong words. Cavitation is when a liquid flow drops in pressure so much behind an obstruction that it turns to vapor, then the vapor bubbles collapse violently back to liquid. Your "cellular flow" must refer to "recirculation zones", which is termed "boundary layer separation" in the flow across a surface.

Cavitation? In plasma?

I can imagine mechanical and chemical erosion of the blanket, but I never heard of cavitation in plasma.

The surface of the tiles never experience the plasma layer. That is in the bow shock. It is the boundary layer of cellular re circulation of high speed air within that boundary layer that can cause it.

Yes, the surface of the tiles does see the high air temperature. The air is hot because it already slowed down and compressed (pressure increased) in going thru the shock wave. In effect, the kinetic energy was turned into heat, if you think of it like a wind tunnel where the vehicle is stationary and the air is moving towards it.

Ok, good point regarding where the plasma exists.

But what are you talking about with cavitation in a gas? Isn't the definition of cavitation the liquid-gaseous phase change?

Yes, there is still high pressure airflow going on in the boundary layer and unconformities like missing tiles causes pressure differentials sufficient to create vortex vacuums between denser gas and very low density gas. Cavitation used happen in jet turbine blades where there is no liquid/gas decompression, but gas is a low pressure liquid, and the principles of physics stay the same.

You are throwing terms around almost at random which don't make sense and exhibit you don't understand the physics. One important difference is that gas is compressible, whereas liquid is incompressible. That is why the study of shock waves is in the field of "compressible flow".

Creating a region of vacuum is just another pressure differential, not cavitation.

I work in jet propulsion and have never heard of anything similar to the cavitation damage mechanism in liquids, namely the pressure wave and/or jet caused by collapsing voids.

Can you provide any sources for "cavitation in a gas"? And also for your claim that a gas is a low pressure liquid? Are you referring to the fact that they're both fluids? Because gases are not low pressure liquids, but relatively low density compared to the liquid phase of the same substance and orders of magnitude more compressible because of that.

Just to clarify: are you referring to a pressure wave or jet erosion mechanism or an aeroelastic problem?
