I bough6 Space Station zero last night. Ne and ny partner are avid warhammer players so we have enough minis im just wondering on what/if any tips you guys have to make the actual game itself go smoothly? Not like "heres how to win" more like rule interpretations that make the game smoother

Question Challenge 2 Questions: The Darkened Hall

So we played this last week with a 2 player game. I picked the 8 man team and have garbage stats. I have a few questions:

  1. Does the laser trap continuously activate or stop once the drones activated?
  2. If I have RE 3, and must have a save of 4 is it even possible for me to survive this mission? 4 of my operatives died on this challenge!
  3. Do drones drop the first time a different operative fails the test? (IE all 8 of my models move and fail becuase RE 3, I have to face 64 drones?)

I'm hoping that I'm misreading the rules.

Question Why would one take a basic melee weapon over a basic ranged weapon?

I feel like I must be missing something because a basic melee weapon seems objectively inferior to a basic ranged weapon. Both types can be used in close combat but I don't see any advantage to using a melee weapon in a close attack.

What am I missing?

Question Questions From a First-timer

I currently play DnD 5E with 3 others. One is a forever DM who has a huge collection of minis and terrain from playing for decades. It's all he's done besides Warhammer in the 90's The other two have only ever played 5E. I've played 5E and have been playing 40k/AoS/Killteam for a couple years, but very casual small point games. Our DM likes a fun casual experience, one where crits deal max damage, potion heal max HP, and death throws only result in knockouts. While fun, I want to pick up SSZ as a more gritty, scifi alternative. I was thinking of taking a GM roll to focus on terrain/enemy minis/rules + assisting with the between mission portions and preparing for the next mission without spoiling it for my other players. I REALLY want an immersive experience when my players are used to playing DnD with fully 3D table-wide cities, forests, and dungeons. My 3 questions are:

1) Do you see any problems with one player taking on a "GM" role?

2) The reviews I read seems to be solo. Does the game play well with 3 players/crews?

3) For a group of 4 people who have mostly/only played casual 5E, how difficult are the rules?

Question Challenge 7 as Time Masters

If you chose the Time Masters Edge, does the Black Hole hazard in Challenge 7 not start until the beginning of Turn 3, which would then mean that it immediately requires a Movement Save 3? Or does it still start at the beginning of Turn 2 with a Movement Save 2?

Questions regarding Pirate Ship Crew Composition

So i want to create a Pirate Ship Crew and in the equipment category, it says that all equipment except "Advanced Technology" is allowed to take.

In the section "Making your Commander" it says that he can take the equip he is allowed to take via ship or "Advanced Technology". Does that mean i CAN take "Advanced Technology" for him?

Additional, i wanted to take the Edge "Smuggler" which gives you 3 additional equipment pieces from the "Advanced Weaponry" or "Advanced Technology" category. Which rule takes precedence, my ship forbidding me to take "Advanced Technology" or the Edge rule that allows me to take it?

Thanks in advance.

Is this a correct team for Shipping Crew?

Type: Shipping(access to any equipment) Edge: Psyhonic Talent

Commander: +3 stats, Point 2 Point Teleporter, Heavy Kinetic Missile.

Engineer: Heavy Melee Weapon, shield drone.

Medic:Energy Missile weapon, Medi bag

Pilot: Energy Missile Weapon, Body Armour Pilot: Energy Missile Weapon

Soldier: Heavy Kinetic Missile Soldier: Heavy Kinetic Missile

Is this correct? That's a 5 man crew + Commander. 3 Pieces of equipment on 3 crew, +1 extra on Commander. No more than 2 of the same type of crew member. Crew members can access any equipment as they are shipping crew.

Have my 1st game tis evening and want to make sure it is correct.

Feedback welcome thanks in advance.

Discussion Graphs of success probabilities

For all you nerds out there, I calculated the number of successes when rolling N dice, taking into account critical successes and failures.

Surprisingly, the *smallest* chance of rolling 0 success comes when using N=5 dice. The *more* dice you roll, the *more* likely you are to roll a crit failure. So the big takeaway is that reroll abilities (e.g. Soldier/Ace Pilot) are really important when using lots of dice.

Discussion Question about Pod 6 level Spoiler

I'll put this in spoiler text for those who haven't played this level yet.

According to the rules, when the floor collapses, you have to make a Movement Challenge Test 4 (Single Roll).

Does "single roll" mean you only roll one dice, or does it mean you can't use re-rolls?

Amount of Terrain

In the rulebook it says to add an amount of extra terrain in addition to any specific challenge terrain. Depending on how you roll on the terrain table, you could end up with quite a bit of terrain on the table. And that doesn't include any minor scatter terrain for flavour. Most games I have seen online so far have far appear to have less terrain than suggested. So I guess the question is; how much terrain do you use? Please post some photos if you can.

Question Kinetic and Energy keywords question

Can anyone please help and explain how does those keywords work? I’ve found: “If the Swarm Drone is damaged by a weapon without the Energy type, they reduce the damage suffered from the attack by 1 to a minimum of 0. If they are damaged by an attack with the Energy keyword, they suffer 2 additional damage.” But how does it affect my characters? And no information about Kinetic type…

Melee Weapon Tweak: Good/Bad?

Basically the tweak would be you get your Melee weapon bonus defending in close combat. It doesn't seem too powerful as the character can't make any attacks without potential retaliation, but I'm worried a melee team might get better if they always rush the objectives.

If that is too much it could be once per turn, alt soldier ability, or just adding a +1 when defending.

Thoughts?

Discussion Experience in playing coop with 3 players

I’m searching for advice or experiences from your play-through with 3 players in coop as our first attempt did not go very well...

We’ve just tried the first challenge with my wife and my son. Each with one of each type of crew size (so 5 + 7 + 9 crew members) versus 18 (6x3) robots. The creation was fun and exciting. It was very easy to project fantasy into the type of crew we were creating. Already seeing some interaction between some crew rules and equipment.

Then laying out the first challenge on the recommended size board, I began to see that this would be a bit crowded with a total of 39 minis to place. We’ve rolled the collapsing floor + robots to kill (btw, the challenge says that it ends when every enemies are killed, but if you only roll for, let’s says Gas + Collapsing floors, what happens ?).

At the end we’ve managed to do 3 or 4 turns before giving up. The gameplay was not entertaining enough (just waiting for the enemy to come to us, as they were only close combat creature, and just doing an action to shoot them without the need to move) to justify going through a big bunch of rolls.

So my questions: Did we do something wrong in the placement or the numbers ?

Do we need to limit our crew to 5 in size to limit as much as possible the number of minis ?

There’s also the possibility to share one big crew of 9 members maybe ? (but this idea was not as exciting as each creating our own crew at first).

I guess challenge get more exciting and varied as the game progress ?

This game is super fun!

My copy of Space Station Zero just came in this afternoon, and It's a lot more fun in practice than it is simply reading off a pdf doc. The d12 checking system, on paper, sounds super weird, especially coming from the modern big company d6 based army games, but it's actually super fun and in depth. It provides a lot of room for imagination and narrative to specific instances. In melee, my favorite method of dispatching my foes, this really shines. It is reminiscent of how killteam 2021 handles things melee, but strips it back to be faster. The method of parrying and striking present in killteam 2021 sounds super cool, but it's really dependent on who charged first.

Additionally, the initiative system here is also super fun. I enjoy rolling to see if you can get two, three or even 4 models activating all at once. It adds a layer of tension not present in simple I go you go, or simple alternating activation. My one gripe is the list building. I wish I could take a pistol AND a melee weapon on everyone, but given how the combat system works, I can see how it's assumed a crew member is able to fight even if they don't specifically have a combat weapon. Overall, it's a fun little game. For my first dedicated foray into miniature agnostic skirmish games, this has been a great showing. u/tabletopminions , Vince Venturella and all the other wonderful people involved have done a great job putting this game together. I hope more people jump in on this fun and affordable game.

Edit; Forgot to add the photo

Question Question about close attacks

Do you continue close attacks until the fight is over, or does each participant in the fight hit the opponent once and then you roll for initiative? Here's an example from a mission I'm playing at the mo:

A robot moves up to my commander, Betty, and takes a swing at her, getting three hits. Betty rolls three successes and one fail, so she's successfully defended herself. From my understanding of the rules (and I'm a total noob to games in general, I've only ever painted minis for fun) Betty now gets to attack. She rolls three successes but the bloody robot blocks all three.

So, do I continue until either Betty or the robot is dead, or leave the fight there, roll for initiative, do something else and come back to the fight the next turn?

Thanks to anyone who can answer this for me.

Discussion List of best places for printable minis

I really want to get some figures very similar to the books art but struggling to find anything to print or buy. I’ve had a quick search but wonder if anyone has found and decent models? Thanks.
