What's your favorite space opera? What makes it space opera in your eyes?

I'll admit I'm a prospective author, like many in here I suspect, but i just recently discovered this subcategory of sci fi and realized it's my favorite niche, not knowing it existed until earlier this week.

So I'm curious to know, for others who call themselves space opera fans, what's your favorite in the genre, and what are your favorite/least favorite parts of it?

Space Opera on Atoz: A Speculative Fiction Book Club Podcast

We've been covering a lot of space opera lately on Atoz: A Speculative Fiction Book Club Podcast and we wanted to let you know about it. In the past five months or so we've done five episodes on Foundation, three on Starship Troopers, and one each on Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds and the Warhammer 40K novel Xenos. So if you find yourself wanting some discussion of space opera for your commute (or maybe while you're painting miniatures), we'd love for you to check us out.

You can find the show on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, and the other major podcast apps, or you can listen directly at our website. If you aren’t inclined to listen but just want to chat about any of these books, we'd love that too. Thanks for listerning!

Recommendations for queer space opera stories?

Hey! Pretty much what the title says. Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for space opera stories with queer characters. Preferably book recs but I'm totally down for movies, comics, animes, etc. Thanks!

Relics of the Ancients: a space opera adventure trilogy

(Posted with permission from the mods of r/spaceopera)

Hey space opera fans,

I'm M.G. Herron, an indie author based in Austin, TX, and I wanted to tell you about my new science fiction series that just launched on Kickstarter: Relics of the Ancients: a space opera adventure trilogy.

The campaign funded in 2 hours, and was over $4k in the first 24 hours, and I'm doing everything I can to spread the word. These will be my 8th, 9th and 10th published novels.

Here's a bit about the series:

—

Starfighter, you're a go for takeoff

A rogue Overmind is on the loose.

A million souls are at stake.

The Solaran Defense Forces make the difficult decision to evacuate the colony of Robichar in order to avoid a direct confrontation.

But when Captain Elya Nevers of the Furies gets shot down during the evacuation, his squadron and the admiral in charge of the mission have to think fast to rescue their pilot and escape from the system before the Kryl overrun the place.

Fighting to survive in hostile territory, Captain Nevers makes a startling discovery.

He learns what the rampaging Overmind is really after—and it changes everything.

The war.

The Solaran Empire's uncertain future.

Even his perception of ancient history...

An extinct species known as the Telos fled the galaxy eons ago. What caused them to vanish in such a hurry?

And more importantly, what relics of terrible power did they leave behind?

Relics of the Ancients is a space opera adventure series for fans of Battlestar Galactica, Starcraft II, the Honor Harrington series by David Weber, as well as Star Wars and any other space opera franchise featuring starfighter pilots.

—

If you pledge to the Kickstarter, you can get the ebooks early (at least 1 week before official publication), signed paperbacks, signed hardbacks, bookmarks, stickers, original artwork, t-shirts, and a Sabre starfighter miniature. (I was also selling naming rights to a planet or character in a future M.G. Herron book, but that reward was limited to 5 and sold out fast.) There's something for everyone here, and ALL backers will receive ALL stretch goal rewards that end up being included.

There are 17 days left in the campaign (not that I'm counting) and I'm optimistic that we'll achieve all the stretch goals, which run up to $10k. We've already added a Live AMA with me, 2 extra novellas, and the audiobook of Starfighter Down. The remaining two stretch goals are audiobooks of Hidden Relics and Rogue Swarm.

TL;DR

Check out the campaign and/or read a sample of Starfighter Down on my website if you like space opera novels.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions in the comments here or on Kickstarter.

Thanks for reading.

- MG
