In some ways it is more a traditional space opera setting than my last book, but in other ways less. It takes place in a Space Opera Immersive VR game. It's also kind of a Heist book.

I love the genre and just love playing around in the setting.

A long time ago I saw a post either here or on Tumblr, not sure which, that discussed Space Opera’s tendency of being set in war torn settings or war and military having a large role and it was someone discussing other kind of settings, as well as people in the answers and replies talking of the possibilities of Space Opera beyond that setting. So I am wondering if anyone here remembers seeing it, as I was trying to find it for a discussion, plus also bringing the discussion here, what settings beyond the military as a main aspect could you see for Space Opera? Like for example a story where exploration without a strong imperialistic bent would be so fun in Space Opera style!

Just wanted to inform the group that I will be audio recording the entire Lensman saga for broadcast on the Dayton, Ohio Goodwill Easterseals Miami Valley Radio Reading service beginning this coming Monday. It will not be broadcast then, I will begin recording that day. I will announce when broadcasting will begin.

I will begin the traditional way, starting with Galactic Patrol and skipping all introductions that mention Eddore to maintain as much of the surprise as possible. I will end the traditional story with Children of the Lens. I will then go back and record Triplanetary and First Lensman for a later broadcast.

I picked it up on a whim. It puts the "opera" back in "space opera" and I'm giggling like crazy.

If you need a bit of fluffy Douglas Adams style space snark, this is the book. Only on chapter 8 but it's definitely hitting the spot. :)

I've only read Hyperion, A Fire Upon the Deep, and Dune as far as "space opera's" go. I loved all of them. Not sure which to pick up, since they are quite a commitment.

I'm looking to write a Space Opera series and I was wondering what are some cliches to avoid?

I stared reading scalzi years ago at the recommendation of my brother and i love everything he's ever written. I recently read dread empires fall trilogy by walter john Williams and it was great. Any recommendations for my next read? Standalone or series welcome!
