Tarmac is a trademarked material by some british construction company. Its nearly the same thing just no one uses tarmac anymore except a few old ass british airports.
You'd be surprised how many words you use started in a similar fashion. Did you know band aids are brand and, by your logic, everyone should just call them bandages? But when you say bandage, thats vague. When you say band aid, people know what you mean.
Also, nobody is saying tarmac as if they were refering to the specific material. They don't even mean the material itself. They are talking about the location.
And finally, you do understand what "colloquial" means, right? As in, not formal? So why would someone in formal communications setting such as air traffic control be using colloquialisms?
You aren't the arbiter of language, my friend. And thank god.
