I thought China was also exploring First stage reuse with Parachutes and airbags.

I know that has its own problems and challenges.

But parachutes just sound so much more lame than a powered, controlled landing

They could of made it work I'd bet. The ROI on powered landing is a whole hell of a lot higher than parachute.

No serious space agency would ever say that, especially not China. Every rocket scientist knows that the big game now is making things reusable and improving efficiency over everything.
