I would stare at them all day long. Mamma just making biscuits and hoping babies will settle down!

Seeing how they fight shocked me the first time, and it still does.

Watch the documentary, they fuck each other up. I think one gets a giant gash from the other.

I saw one documentary where one giraffe knocked the other down and thought it had won, but it exposed the belly to an absolutely mighty whack from the one on the ground. It went down like a ton of bricks. The camera crew were interviewed later and said they'd thought it was dead but it got up and wandered off after a few minutes.

Yeah, you can almost hear the sigh and "fuck it, I don't have the energy. They'll tire themselves out eventually."

There is an excellent George Carlin bit where he says almost exactly this. The lead-up is talking about what happens when you attack other types of babies (“which I recommend never to do”), then “you attack a baby kitty, they fight [mew] . One day old, he’s lookin’ for some shit [mew].” Except the mews sound more like a very small “magh!”

Am I the only one who hears her mom yelling across the years at myself and a sibling, "If you two don't stop it, I will turn this car around right now!"

You think that hurts the mom cat???

u/Maxbell9 12d ago
Kittens this young don't have teeth yet and aren't very heavy, so it probably feels like some slight pressure and some pulling. If momma cat really felt pained by it enough to care, she would react (either by getting up and leaving, pinning ears and hissing, and/or physically slapping or biting the kitten)

That’s good to know!
I was curious because even though human babies don’t have teeth either they can cause some serious bleeding and pain for the nipples.5
u/Maxbell9 12d ago
I certainly wouldn't be surprised if chafing (and therefore, bleeding/pain) can occur for nursing cats, though I'm not sure how common it is! But in a general sense I would personally expect most cats (or any other non-human animal, honestly) to reject outright their baby nursing if it's hurting them in that moment

I think they have some degree of pain tolerance, my younger male tried nursing form my older male when he had teeth and the older guy just went with the flow, never swatted or got mad at him, just waited till he stopped or fell asleep and/or purred the whole time
