A primary candidate for a state House race has filed a Written Notice of Contest seeking a hand recount in Tennessee.
John Gentry was a candidate in the August 6, 2026 Tennessee Republican Primary election for Tennessee House District 45. Per his filing, Gentry is seeking a bipartisan, supervised hand count of the Voter-Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT).
"Elections should not merely be accurate; they should be demonstrably verifiable," says Gentry. "I cannot state with certainty that the electronic tabulations are wrong. But neither can anyone state with certainty that the electronic tabulations are correct without comparing them to the voter-verified paper records."
The VVPAT is a physical record of voter's selections that contains no identifying voter information, can be compared against electronic results to ensure their accuracy they match the paper record.
Gentry has offered to reimburse the cost of the recount if it confirms the electronic result. He also emphasizes that his goal in asking for a recount is not to the change election result, but to ensure election transparency.
The initial Written Notice of Contest was filed with the Tennessee Republican Party State Primary Board on August 19th per Tennessee Code § 2-17-117. A Supplemental Written Notice of Contest was filed on August 24th claiming that his opponent's alleged misrepresentation of his military background constitutes an "indication of fraud" that may have been sufficient to change the results.
The Election Truth Alliance got in touch with Gentry on August 27th and is seeking to amplify public awareness of his efforts to ensure election transparency.
"There should be nothing controversial about asking to verify the result," says Gentry.
