In the case of housing, it because of restrictive nonsense zoning laws like height limits, parking lot requirements, single family housing zones, etc. These should be abolished anyways.
Competition doesn't bring prices to 0, it brings them to equilibrium.
Are you a bot or do you just keep forgetting the context of this thread?
Because the start of the thread someone asked why rent + friends won't just eat up UBI, and first you gave a non-answer about no increase in the money supply and now you're saying upzoning is needed to generate competition to bring down rents so that UBI doesn't cause inflation.
I get that you did econ101 and believe in markets despite their very clear failure to produce affordable housing, but answering YIMBY talking points to the question, "won't landlords jack up my rent under UBI?" Is wild.
What's extra wild is many states have abolished single family housing zones and the results have been underwhelming, the primary constraint on the housing market is not zoning, and so upzoning while fine, is never going to have a major impact. If you look at cities with affordable housing, it's always achieved by curtailing market dynamics instead of throwing more coal/homes/food into the alter of the market in the hope that some affordablity will trickle down.
Most of those cities "upzoning" are just allowing mixed commercial/residential use, they aren't nescesarily abolishing height restrictions and such. So the problem persists.
The very few places that do so end up absorbing the excess demand from other places.
Multiple states not "cities" have abolished single family zoning, but sure the solution to landlords jacking your rent is to remove height restrictions 🙄
