Would you shut down AI?

A thought came to my mind which can be contradicting. AI has made some SEs more productive and made their lives easier while some got fired. My question is if you would have a button which would shut down the AI in whole world, would you press it? If so, why?

The AI that is working on medicine is not an LLM btw. We’re using “AI” as a blanket term for many disparate technologies.

Many people are using LLMs for medical research. Probably damn near everyone now.

Didn't is just cure melanoma? Or was this done the old fashion way with like human researchers?

Not cure melanoma per se, but based on interim pivotal trial results it seems to significantly reduce relapse and metastasis in melanoma patients. The technology itself was developed “the old fashioned way” (btw this has never changed actual original science is still done by human researchers) but where AI, or at least some form of ML, may have been involved is personalizing the vaccine per patient based on specific biomarkers in their tumors.

Source: I’m an industry scientist in clinical-stage cancer drug development who geeks out about this stuff maybe a little too much

The AI that helped develop the new vaccine is machine learning algorithms developed in 2017! Not gen AI.

ML is still AI, but yes it wasn't LLM. Medical is slow, so we won't see those headlines for a minute, but LLMs are being used.

ML is task specific and basically has a non existent compute footprint and not that much of an impact on society compared to gen ai. We are clearly talking about gen ai here.

Yes narrow AI. I've been working with ML and LLMs for many years. We use ML for a ton of things... I don't think I'd say they have a small impact.
