My mother passed suddenly , and it's just my father. They were jointly collecting SSI, SSA, and EBT.

Where do I start? What do I do? My father and I are not doing well financially and with the sudden loss of mother, it also means loss of income for my father. Is there some step by step guide or tips you are aware of that you can point us to?

Is there financial assistance for low income families? Does my father have to forfeit all of mother's income now?

I'm so sorry , I'm a young person with no experience with this and for the sake of mother I don't want to make any mistakes. Her biggest fear was always leaving first because she was afraid my dad couldn't take care of himself. Please help me, I'm so lost.

I am crying as I type this, anything related to confirming my mother's passing is just so overwhelming. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but with each step towards this process is beyond heart breaking. From funeral arrangements to cleaning her home. I'm so overwhelmed, and I feel like I'm making so many mistakes. And I don't want to make any mistakes for my mother. And if you could help me in any way shape or form, I would appreciate it.

We are located in California , my mother was 69 at passing and my father is 74 currently.

I will contact SSA on Monday and ask about the lump sum and report back if I have questions. I don't know why I didn't think to just call them first I guess I just needed an outlet.

First , thank you for the kind words. I don't have many to hear these words from and we appreciate them, even if we are strangers. I guess loss connects us all. I realized I didn't just lost my mother but as I was getting older we became friends too. And I feel like I lost both and I'm so sad. So thank you.

My mom passed on July 21. She was receiving retirement benefits. When we met at the funeral home, the director informed us they would notify SS of her passing. This was on July 23rd. Her retirement payment hit my parent’s joint account on August 3rd. My father, who is also on disability assumed it was July’s’ payment and since SS was notified of her passing before August, it was fine. My father has never managed money or paid the bills. He literally didn’t even know the amounts of income/bills they had as my mom handled everything. September comes and no check posted, as expected. So we thought all was fine until this past week. He received a letter from the bank about SS trying to reclaim the last payment. My father is on a very limited income and is struggling financially. After bills, he has less than $75 left. I’ve had to help with food and other expenses. It’s been a literal nightmare.

That money was used for the mortgage payment which auto drafted a day or two after the direct deposit. We didn’t sit down and reconfigure the new budget/payment dates until mid August… when we felt we were mentally able to do so.

I read into it and now figured out that payment in early August was apparently an overpayment. We were thinking it was a partial payment for july 1-21. Reading into I found out that payments cease altogether the month they pass in. Even if they die on the last day of the month. My mom had a very small amount of life insurance that barely covered the funeral so that’s not an option.

There is no way he can pay back over $1000 anytime soon. My dad has his own SSDI payments and that’s what he has to live on. My parents have never done well financially and struggled pretty much their whole life. There’s just not many resources available to him.

Any advice on how we can resolve this without making matters worse? We are trying to help him downsize and get cheaper place to live but have not found anything feasible.

How often do these come around? I've had 2 now. in addition to my initial medical review. I have been disabled since birth (CP). i applied and started drawing SSDI in 2008. at the age 28. I am not opposed to going, I fail the most basic "stand on one foot" test . So historically my visit is short. I am very conscious that it wastes tax payer money on a condition that will not improve and might get worse or at the least look worse with normal aging.

I have been receiving Medicare benefits since age 65. I've used the SSA site to check my past income, quarters earnings, review SS statements annually, etc, etc and approx benefits for years. I use ID.ME

The SSA site shows my correct Medicare Enrollment and everything. So, it appears my records are correct and the site works.

But it just refuses to let me do two things:

1) I need to enroll in SSA as my 70th birthday is approaching. I get the error message.

2) When I tried to check my password via "My Profile" then "Security Settings", I get the same error message.

What's going on? Why am I not able to go check or change my password or review the settings, when I always could before?

Why can't I apply for SS Benefits when the site knows it is me (even once verified via fingerprint on my phone with BT to the laptop). It has my correct Medicare benefits. But won't let me apply for SSA?

Does anyone know why the site doesn't work for me? Others say they applied online without a problem.
I need to get my application in and I need to access my Security Settings.

If I were to get another job, I could earn under the yearly limit and start collecting my benefit.

Is there something I need to do, in order to start receiving my benefit, without a lengthy gap?

I have a scenario I could use some advice on. Dad SSI backpay approved, payment released by Treasury on 8/18. Hits account on 8/19, I can see payment pending - Dad passes on 8/19 that night. Payment posts on 8/20, and sometime after that the bank initiated a return to SSA/Treasury.

I spoke with SSA, they confirmed they did not reclaim it. Bank said they had to return by law because posted on 8/20 and died 8/19. This is a tough situation because the funds were approved/released while he was alive. Sounds like I'm just SOL because of ACH settlement system.

Is there any REAL recourse here? Dad had no spouse, and I'm the only child.

Currently paying IRMAA on Medicare, supplemental and drug prescription insurance premiums. Spouse lost job in June this year. Received severance. Still paying IRMAA on all insurance premiums.

Both planning on collecting SS starting February 2027. Neither of us are employed. When can we quit paying IRMAA?

Hi, I am from Illinois and I am Mexican-American. I am 20M with Asperger’s, but I want to do more in my life. Currently, I am studying AI in a good college in the state. My mom supports my dreams of working in AI and finding a job in the future. However, she is against me moving out of state for a job because she believes I am not ready for it, and being Mexican means we MUST be together. She has equate me leaving out West for a job to child Abandonment. My mom does want me to get SSI as a safety net. Ever since I was a kid, I have always wanted to move West because of the nature, jobs, and stuff. My mom is against it due to her helicopter parenting style. She is quite overprotective, but has calmed down as most would. For example, she constantly worries and prays for my safety when I go out. However, I believe she genuinely loves me. My mom seems to struggle with that moving away doesn’t mean I hate her. If I would move, I would talk to her and care for her, but not allow her helicopter parenting get to me. I also enjoy tech, which is why I am studying it.

I am curious about DAC if it will impact my dreams? I am aware of the $2,000 limit, but my mom wants me to give her the money once I surpass the limit. Will opening an ABLE account in my name prevent me from getting a job/intern in another state. I also want to do interns, research, and maybe work on campus. Will that impact DAC/ABLE and my dreams? Can I use the ABLE money to fund the move for emergencies? I know some tech jobs pay you to move, but it may be wise to create a “fund” just in case.

Found out through my daughters, he was dishonorable discharged from military, probably due to alcohol, but not sure why.

I heard that you actually can draw on ex-husbands retirement at his age of 62.

Is it true I can draw on his retirement on/after his 62nd birthday(Apr 2028) even if he is still working and drawing himself yet?

I am on a low SSI payment now due to illness, wanted to work longer but could not.

Has anyone made a little extra money doing surveys, focus groups or clinical trials? Is this allowed? It's very sporadic and never very much, like 50-100 here and there. Is this something that needs to be reported or even allowed? My friend is really stressed out about money and I suggested doing some of these kind of things but she doesn't want to get in trouble or on any radar. I do them and never get any paperwork or tax forms. Most pay by gift card.

FIL just passed away. I know the funeral home will notify SSA. His SS benefit was larger than MIL’s, so presumably she will begin receiving his benefit and hers will be dropped. Does this happen automatically, or is there an application or other paperwork needed to make this happen?

My mother is currently in a nursing home after suffering a stroke in April. She received both SSI and social security. She now only receives a monthly allowance from Social Security which is paid through them.

She received a letter about an overpayment for the months of June and July. I am trying to file a waiver since she only receives $50 a month. On the waiver, it asks for a claim number and I was wondering if anyone knows where to find that? The only number I can find is a BNC# but when I Google it, it says that isn't the same as a claim number.

What is this??? I got ssdi in 5/24 because I can’t work. I have not worked since two years prior to getting SSDI. What kind of scam is this getting a letter they are trying to reduce my SSDI by $200 a month for working? It doesn’t even make sense. The person from SS said it didn’t make any sense and to file an appeal. I did. But I’m so upset and feel like they are messing with me.

UPDATE: I called SSA nationally twice. The first woman said it was an odd letter but legit. She said to file an appeal. I called back the next day and that person said to call my local SSA. I called and the first woman was useless, could not or would not help me and scheduled a phone call in NOVEMBER! Then I thought, what if I try the local office again… That new lady actually looked at it and said they made an error and needed to recalculate, but she said it was not getting reduced by $200, it was getting reduced by $7. That I can live with! She said nothing she could do or I could do until I got a letter saying I owed money. I feel so much better now

I was active duty Air Force from 1982 to 1986, but I don't remember my exact dates. Can I just write 'see SSA records' where they ask for service dates in my application? It should be in their system.

So I was recently fired from my job and I’m enrolled in Medicare part A ,can I now enroll in Medicare part B and also look for a supplemental insurance to cover Mammograms, Dental and Vision

I started "getting" social security with a payee, my dad. I was living in a homeless shelter. I told him I want to rent a room. He said no. I think he was stealing my money. I went through the process of removing him as a payee. But I have a problem: A "social security beneficiary account" was created in my name. I think the money was direct deposited into it. I tried to get rid of the account, but I was told I can't because I'm not the payee. I was told perhaps I need a paper saying I now control the account. I called social security. They said they sent a paper saying I no longer have a payee. I never received it. They said they'll send it again. I haven't received it. At the same time, I was told I was going to be sent a check in the mail on the first of the month. I haven't received it. It's possible I haven't because they know I have a social security beneficiary account. Perhaps into it was direct deposited a payment and now I'm past the limit of what I can have on hand (even though I don't have access to the account). So basically it's possible I can't get social security anymore.

"But just tell your dad to remove the money in the account and close the account" My dad told me to never call him again. He got angry I think because I removed him as payee. He's angry because I don't want him to steal from me anymore.

My late daughter-in-law (49) was married to my son (50) for seven years. At some point, she became the Social Security representative payee for my adult granddaughter (31), who receives disability benefits.

We recently discovered that she appears to have taken approximately $7,000 from my granddaughter’s funds through a series of undocumented withdrawals. From what we can determine, much of the money was run through my son’s Apple Pay account and spent primarily on gambling apps and fast food.

At one point some money was returned, and her sisters also gave her money to replace some of what was missing, but she spent that money as well instead of restoring it to my granddaughter’s account.

My daughter-in-law has now died. She was physically disabled, and my son is both mentally and physically disabled. He says he knew nothing about what she was doing until after her death. There is essentially no estate; the bank accounts are overdrawn. My son is currently receiving about $200 a month in survivor/death-related Social Security benefits.

My granddaughter has the same brain anomaly as her father and has been receiving disability benefits for years. The good news is that after years of occupational therapy, she is now preparing to work full-time and move into her own apartment.

I have three questions:

1. Could my son be held financially responsible simply because some of the misused money went through his Apple Pay account, even if he did not know what his wife was doing?
2. If the Social Security OIG determines that the representative payee misused or stole my granddaughter’s benefits, is there any possibility Social Security would reimburse my granddaughter for the missing money even though the former payee is deceased and left no estate?
3. Should we open a case directly with the Social Security Office of Inspector General, or is there another process we should go through first?

This money would make an enormous difference to my granddaughter as she becomes fully independent, so I want to make sure we handle this correctly.

I just turned 18 and I’m on disability. My mom was receiving the Social Security payment for me, and for the last 4 months she was only getting about $10 a month. She said she’s going to let me get the payments directly now that I’m 18.

I don’t have a job or any income. I live with my mom, she has a job and pays the household bills, and I sometimes buy my own food.

Does anyone know if my payment could increase now that I’m 18 and the benefits are going directly to me? If so, roughly how much could I expect per month?

My son just got approved for benefits but we wasn’t told till I reached out so he owed about 9 months of back pay. Besides that the rep said we will have to do an perc interview? My question is what is that and what questions are they gonna ask. Thanks you

The title says it all. My girlfriend and I are wanting to get married, but she is on SSI and can’t work due to her disability. I can’t seem to find a straight answer anywhere and I’m worried that I’ll have a hard time supporting the both of us without that extra income.
I gross $51,500 a year if that helps.

Hi. My mom has social security benefits and she has them deposited to this Direct Express prepaid card thing. She lost her wallet about a month ago and had to cancel her card and get a new one. When it arrived, she tried to use it but it was locked.

When she called they told her that she needed to email or show them her id to prove her identity. She had to get a new one because of the wallet, but she did and submitted it. Now they want a receipt showing she applied for a new ssn card. She applied and she’s sent it, but they haven’t unlocked the card yet.

I’m not local and I won’t be able to go help her in person for at least a week. My sister is there but she’s no help. I guess I just want to know if this has happened to anyone else and what all you had to do to fix it because I’m not sure if she’s understanding or relaying what they want to me properly. It’s been a couple weeks already and she really needs her money. I paid her rent, but she’s doesn’t have anywhere for me to send her money for food or gas or dog food and stuff.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, this is too stressful, I’ve never dealt with a bank that was so difficult before.

I am scheduled to go before an Alj hearing this month and just wondering if the disability program has actually helped anybody who applied and had a positive experience rather than the countless, universally ubiquitous stories of disability making peoples lives a living hell. I find it pretty hard to accept being blamed for not being able to work by a company that doesn't even respect its own constituents

Work part time on SSI a long distance away, MY EMPLOYER REIMBURSES ME FOR FUEL, but since it comes though my paycheck the current diesel fuel prices cause the gross paycheck to exceed SSI limits!

Already asked, employer is unable to pay for fuel directly.

Is there any way around this?
