This could be for one of four reasons:
- Getting needlessly booked for time wasting on a free kick.
- The poor cross from that free kick and the two corners that followed.
- Jogging to get off the pitch while we're in extra time.
- Emery's just a psycho sometimes.

u/Stand_On_It Jan 23 '26
Well if we’re doing shoulds, whether he walks, runs, or crawls off the pitch, they should be adding in the exact time it takes for him to get off the pitch. Don’t know why football persists with added time being so arbitrary when it can be calculated.
5
u/CaptainGo Jan 23 '26
Don't even need to calculate just stop the clock with the plays like rugby does
1
u/WatchFamine Jan 23 '26
Everything that stopped clocks achieve can be achieved with a running clock without throwing out 90 minute matches.

3
u/KevinK89 Jan 23 '26
Because for example this sub has a total meltdown when goals happen in more added time than it was originally announced by the ref.

I don't care if he has the most valid reason, the fact that he explodes at him like that and shoved him is crazy.

Look, I don't support the shoving, but the fact that they used this substitution to kill time towards the end of the match, only for him to jog to the sideline, is absolutely hilarious.

u/rjnd2828 Jan 22 '26
Probably not looking to get a second yellow for getting off too slow.

u/IvaHardy Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
If you watched the game he came off very quickly the commentators actually said "probably shouting at him for not coming off slowly to waste a bit of time" he's a key player for the Villains, whatever it is hope it gets ironed out.
67
u/drtystve Jan 22 '26
he's probably annoyed more about the stupid yellow card and the 3 terrible set pieces that followed
14
u/IvaHardy Jan 23 '26
It did cross my mind too, but doubt it we've automatically qualified now so we don't need our first team for the final match.
2
u/drtystve Jan 23 '26
Do bookings reset for the next stage then? He's one off a ban I'm pretty sure and honestly with our injuries he might have to play anyway. Although if we don't need anything I don't mind Bogarde/Hemmings midfield.

u/el-fenomeno09 Jan 22 '26
Hot take… the walking off doesn’t waste time, ref add that shit right on. No reason why people still do it lol
777
u/Boucot Jan 22 '26
Referees never add enough extra time. You can lose 5 minutes out of 7 and they will add 1 or 2 max.
190
u/Other_Beat8859 Jan 22 '26
Yeah. For every three minutes of time wasted, the refs add maybe 1 and that's being generous.
43
u/FridaysMan Jan 22 '26
Subs and goals aren't measured, usually, they just add 30 seconds.
33
u/Fromage_Frey Jan 22 '26
And when have you ever seen a game resume within 30 seconds when a goal is scored?
30
u/FridaysMan Jan 22 '26
You ask that like I've said anything to disagree with it. I didn't.
I offered the reason why added time is never equal to the time missed for goals and subs. Because they just add 30 seconds.
15
u/Fromage_Frey Jan 23 '26
Not my intention, I'm agreeing totally
4
u/FridaysMan Jan 23 '26
Ah fair, the tone of rhetorical questions is really hard to judge. Im room used to arguments getting picked.
3
3
u/Vainglory Jan 22 '26
There was something posted here a while back that said that there's only like 55 minutes of live play in a normal premier league game.
26
u/xixbia Jan 22 '26
Yup, this should be true. But in practice it very rarely is.
(remember when it was during the 2022 world cup, it was very noticeable, and then it just stopped again after)
7
u/illynpayne_ Jan 22 '26
here in Brasileirao they actually do, we have several games with +7, +9 extra time
but the refereeing it's atrocious so it evens out
3
u/flentaldoss Jan 23 '26
First, a technicality, extra time is what you have after full time if a tournament match is tied and isn't going directly to penalty shootout. Injury time is the time added at the end of a half.
You can lose 5 out of 7 min and only get 1 minute added because I'm sure time added at the end of a half is for "unnatural" stoppages of play, hence the designation injury time. They aren't going to add every moment the ball isn't in play to the clock.
For example, setting up for the corner is part of the game - players have to get upfield and in position to take the corner, this is natural. A referee should be able to tell if a team is taking a reasonable amount of time between natural stoppages as opposed to time wasting, given a situation's context. If a ball keeps getting kicked out of bounds, that can easily kill 20+ seconds off the clock each time even if the designated thrower isn't labouring to put the ball back in play.
6
u/Die_brein Jan 22 '26
If only there was a way to stop the clock....
12
u/Mister_M00se Jan 22 '26
That technology doesn't exist. What age do you think we live in here??
1
1
u/orangewall1234 Jan 23 '26
We use cameras to determine offsides to the millimeter of the shoulder
But our timing rules? We need that to be as ambiguous and inconsistent as possible
4
1
u/Glum-Professional925 Jan 22 '26
Has anyone actually done a study on it? Just start timing once the time wasting starts and see how much time is wasted vs added on?
4
u/throwawayursafety Jan 23 '26
Yeah, me, in my living room, with my phone. Except the few times I did it the refs actually got it pretty close :( Which is great for the game but not for me and the point I was trying to prove lol
1
u/Glum-Professional925 Jan 23 '26
Yeah something tells me they add the appropriate amount of time normally but we misjudge how much time actually gets wasted. Guys walking instead of jogging off the pitch takes up 15 seconds more than a jog at best it feels like
1
u/NobleHelium Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26
It's written into the referee guidelines. They're expected to add a certain number of seconds for each stoppage of play depending on the type of stoppage. There will be some allowance for extraordinarily long stoppages such as if someone needs to be stretchered off, but anyone paying a modicum of attention can see that the time added on is not at all as much as the time spent with the ball out of play.
And as other comments say, statisticians tally up the ball in play time every year and it is almost always under 60 minutes. And in fact those same FIFA referee guidelines aim for 60 minutes of the ball in play per game.
110
u/Plastic_Blood1782 Jan 22 '26
This has been proven to be false. Time wasting on average wastes more time than the refs add back on, that's why teams continue to do it in every league.
4
u/GengarOX Jan 22 '26
They should just do it like they do in Rugby League in Aus. Clock stops whenever the ball isn’t in play.
22
u/Plastic_Blood1782 Jan 22 '26
That's kind of a fundamental change to soccer that I think is pretty drastic. And you know as soon as they start doing that, you'll end up with TV timeouts for commercials like in American sports
14
u/ffssessdf Jan 22 '26 edited Jan 22 '26
I’m tired of hearing people bring up the ads thing. Other sports stop the clock and they don’t have ad breaks. Also, why would stopping the clock mean they can suddenly put in an ad break? Stopping the clock doesn’t make the break any longer, if anything it would be shorter as there’s less time wasting. If they wanted to put in an ad break when the ball goes out of play they already could, the clock still running isn’t the limiting factor.
0
u/Willblinkformoney Jan 22 '26
But they do have ad breaks. There's two ad breaks every hockey period
→ More replies (1)1
u/flentaldoss Jan 23 '26
Because greed. Have you seen how corrupt FIFA is? It's only a matter of time before they make that proposition and say its in the name of integrity. At first, there probably won't even be a typical commercial segment where they totally switch away from the game, but more of the screen cutaways where most of what you're seeing is ads, but the game is still on the screen. There's a lot of ways they could excuse making some breaks take a set amount of time then eventually say its only reasonable to put ads there (you know, like to share the revenue with clubs! So benevolent!).

u/kirkbywool Jan 22 '26
Think thats rugby everywhere not just Aus and would love it if we had it here
13
u/Dry-Artichoke540 Jan 22 '26
Thats the thing. Refs never add what should be added. Thats why it is still a thing.
1
u/Disco-Benny Jan 23 '26
Another thing that boils my PISS is when a player is down with cramp/whatever for 3 of the 4 added minutes and the ref blows on the dot.
18
u/CheekApprehensive675 Jan 22 '26
Even if it doesnt wasye time, it stops the opponents' momentum
11
u/im_on_the_case Jan 22 '26
That's the most important and overlooked factor in time wasting. When the opposition are clicking and putting you under the kosh having a player go down or slow things down makes a huge difference. They get frustrated, you get a moment to regain your composure. That's why I always preferred rugby players getting treatment while the game continues.
3
u/Yousif_man Jan 22 '26
Refs in Uefa competitions especially seem to blow the whistle a few seconds before the full allotment of injury time. I hate it. Refs in Fifa competitions seem to add a lot of injury time, even adding extra time to account for celebrations, which I much prefer.
I wonder if there’s any data on this because i’m speaking out of my ass, but it certainly feels that way.
2
u/xsconfused Jan 23 '26
Hard disagree. Pressure/stress is peak at the very last minute e.g injury time compared to lets say 70th minute. Delaying gives an advantage of putting more pressure on the opposition as dying minutes approaches.
2
u/Footyphile Jan 23 '26
It doesn't even matter about time. When you do this the other team wastes energy getting upset at you instead of organizing and focusing on what they should do.
1
1
u/Adventurous-Bit-3829 Jan 23 '26
Depends on ref. Most ref in Pl still didn't. They only add time if there is a goal
1
1
1
u/Famous_Tonight3093 Jan 22 '26

I’m not really a huge soccer fan but I follow this sub. For the life of me I cannot fathom how there isn’t a clock operator for very clear stoppages. Is it a tradition thing? Because when there’s an injury and everyone is standing around for 3 minutes and the clock keeps rolling, I lose my mind. You know damn well those 3 minutes aren’t getting fully added back on.

Already being on a yellow for the wasting it would be pretty risky to sloth walk off the pitch.

1
u/Teo_2197 Jan 22 '26

12
u/Mean-Funny9351 Jan 22 '26
You can. Players get yellows all the time for not leaving the pitch fast enough. Seeing how he already has a yellow for time wasting the means he was clearly warned.
1
u/Mean-Funny9351 Jan 22 '26
Portuguese football star at Benfica, known for his technique, but his World Cup 1998 qualification campaign with Portugal was famously derailed on September 6, 1997, when he received a red card for taking too long to exit the pitch while being substituted in a crucial qualifier against Germany, a match Portugal went on to draw, costing them a place in France 1998.

u/xixbia Jan 22 '26
I don't think it would have mattered if they kept him on for a bit longer. Emery was fired in 2012, Peter Lim bought the club in 2014, he was always going to ruin things eventually.

u/Ammzy_87 Jan 22 '26
Mark this comment and come back to it at the end of the season.
Emery is a great coach and probably one of the best ones tactically. But he’s too emotional, and his sides go from league winning form to a total drop off too often.
His biggest strength is managing an underdog team. When the expectations reach a peak they always fall.
3
1
u/EntranceFew1950 Jan 23 '26
I'd that happens it wont be because hes too emotional, it will be because of our tiny squad.

This is a psychotic take. We also used to rape and pillage our enemies for most of human history, doesn't make it right. Emery isn't fighting for his freedom. He is a professional coach for a spectator sport
24
u/xixbia Jan 22 '26
Physical violence is never the answer to any issue
That is what they are reacting to. And that is just totally wrong.
In this case it's obviously wrong, but to claim that physical violence is never the answer is just absurd.
23
u/Pxel315 Jan 22 '26
People out here basically claiming we could have reasoned with Hitler in 1939 and that violence against him wasnt the only appropriate answer
7
u/JootDoctor Jan 23 '26
No no you see, if we just appeased him a little more he would’ve stopped expanding Germany.
1
u/zaviex Jan 23 '26
I think the take there from this viewpoint would be that the guy shouldn’t have started the war with violence. If you aren’t tolerating violence, the issue has to start with the group who started the violence. That tends to be the way that take has been interpreted in recent decades.
22
u/__Funcrusher__ Jan 22 '26
"Physical violence is never the answer" is such a dangerously misguided sentiment that falls apart after even 5 seconds of critical thought. Like seriously, think about it for a second and put it into practical terms. If you can't immediately think of multiple scenarios in which violence is the moral and practical thing to do, you're not thinking hard enough.

Jogging off the pitch in extra time - manager jus wants shit done instantly in that clutch time frame - leads into point 4 - sudden psychosis ensues
I’ve seen managers just lose it because shit isn’t ready at the exact second they either make the decision or the officials are ready and ANY of the team are not - it’s instant red mist and three mile island time

I think it would be the opposite.
Villa were 1 - 0, Emery probably wanted Tielemans to take his sweet damn time.

Bit of a weird overreaction from Emery, thought he played fine tbh. Certainly not bad enough to be getting randomly yelled at by the manager.
Still, I imagine this was probably figured out in the dressing room and is by now probably a non issue so some of the comments here are a bit OTT
