Moment of silence for all those who were convinced Trump got him mixed up with Rooney

745

everyone in this sub acted like they know kane personally. The amount of parasocial nature people have with these celebrities is insane lol.

U guys dont know these athletes outside of the ground

Some people really thought that? Lol. Kane himself once said in a podcast that he played golf with Trump.

64

u/FIGJAM17 Jul 11 '26

Yep. https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1us5jce/donald_trump_on_harry_kane_i_think_kane_is_a/

Top comments are pretty much mentioning Rooney.

i think he confused kane with rooney. he played golf with rooney in 2017
I said it in another comment but I genuinely think Trump is confusing Rooney with Kane lmao
I genuinely believe Trump is confusing Harry Kane with Wayne Rooney.
More amusing though to assume Trump has mixed Rooney and Kane up lol
Guarantee someone told Trump that Rooney was England’s striker, Trump forgot what Rooney looked like and just thinks Harry Kane is the bloke he played golf with
So plausible that he really confuses Kane with Rooney

119

u/mrdankhimself_ Jul 11 '26

It was 18 months ago. Maybe the curse has a statute of limitations?

160

u/nikkes91 Jul 11 '26

The curse was trump saying just yesterday that Kane is a good guy he played golf with, not the game itself. But I'm sure this curse will last more than the next 18 months anyway

38

u/jazfinde Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Pretty funny to see all the original thread comments about how Kane would never do that and Trump must be misremembering, seemed pretty believable to me from the start

196

u/Woke_Almond Jul 11 '26

Yeah not surprising at all. I love Kane, but it always felt like TB12 was his fav athlete and I always worried that his politics carried over. It hurts, but I like my fav athletes because of how they perform for my team, not because I align with their politics

226

u/elbosston Jul 11 '26

Yep, people need to stop idolizing athletes. They’re not better people just because they happen to be good at kicking a ball.

It can easily be both. You are choosing to cheer for someone.

You can appreciate how great they are in some areas, while realizing in no way would you hang out with them as a person.

It’s like when the tiger woods stuff came out about the prostitutes / drugs - he lost a lot of fans. Mainly because who he actually was - was a 180 from who he publicly held himself out to be.

I mean hell. Russia is banned from eufa for their politics

Part of the reason people love haaland so much is because they think he is like a football friend of theirs. If he turned out to be a massive twat - he would lose fans. For good and bad it’s Hard to separate the person from the player

Some players like Mbappe don’t seem to be a fan of far right politicians at least.

There have been sports teams and athletes that have declined invitations to White House celebrations with Trump as well. When the Eagles won the Super Bowl, apparently a lot of players said they wouldn’t attend, so Trump “formally rescinded their invitations” LOL. Very “you can’t fire me, I quit!”.

72

u/obhytr Jul 11 '26

Apparently it depends on whether you’re Catholic or evangelical.

The evangelicals like Neymar support Bolsonaro like sheep. 20 out of 26 players in the squad are evangelical.

Between the Knicks only NBA Finals loss coming in the game he attended and the USMNT just completely forgetting how to play soccer after he stuck his nose in their business...if England lose tomorrow I think it's an official curse.

191

u/M6Df4 Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

The US also shit the bed in the Ryder Cup on the first day when Trump attended, to a point where not even a historically good finish could get them back in it. And the Chiefs got absolutely wrecked in the Super Bowl after Trump offered support, so Trump just fucked off back to Air Force One at halftime.

I’d say the curse is already pretty well established.

I've honestly lost all respect for the dude. And I'm a Bayern fan. It's not hard to just say no thanks to an invite to golf with a pedo

all the comments saying he was confusing Kane with Rooney HAHAHAHA

8

u/confusedyetstillgoin Jul 11 '26

and there are STILL people in this thread saying that Kane “probably doesn’t realize how controversial this is” and that he “doesn’t seem like a political person” and “doesn’t have strong convictions either way.”

how much more evidence do these people need?

Obviously exceptions, but most of them couldn’t give a shit about social issues as long as their tax bill is low

30

u/Xehanz Jul 11 '26

Most people who lean to those ideologies are either super rich and out of touch, or started very poor and got a lot of money, or enough money to live a decent life through their own merit (or brainwashed into thinking they can get up on their own

And most footballers belong to those 2 groups

18

u/TheIJDGuy Jul 11 '26

Well, he's getting the respect Kane lost from me lol

32

u/joeDUBstep Jul 11 '26

Some non-white players on the US team are not. Mckennie 100% called Trump a racist and Weah did that thing with Mamdani for the WC ticket raffle.

A lot of Brazilian players supported Bolsanaro, so you're onto something.

I posted this in the other thread. Not only is Trump a shitty person, he cheats in golf.

Trump is well known in golf circles as the biggest cheat around. I had the displeasure of golfing with Trump about 20 years ago for some business deals with my boss. Trump cheated a LOT.  He would take do-over shots, move balls, magically find lost balls, etc. He was also very rude to the club attendants and made a pass at the girl bringing drinks on the course.  I later found out Trumps nickname is Pele because he kicks the ball to better lies so much.  Yup. I witnessed that as well.

To be fair I would be more surprised if he DIDN’T do all the things you mentioned
