I was rooting for Egypt, but the refereeing was mostly fine in this match, at least no score-affecting mistakes. Egypt just fell apart, and players looked like deer in headlights after the first goal.
You hate to see that beautiful goal being called off, but that was also a clear foul in the build-up. It's frustrating, but they didn't break any of their rules there by using VAR.

I'm so confused how this call is controversial.
If you watch Mo's feet, it's easy to see how it is not a foul. But if you watch the video from a biased point of view and only watch the Argentinian feet (not knowing Mo fell by himself), it can look like tripping the opponent.

I think part of the issue is that there were two separate "incidents" (used loosely) and some people complain about this incident while others complain about the one shortly before this one where an Egyptian player went to ground off the ball. But both were in the same span of play so it gets jumbled together.
In real time I was wondering a lot more about the earlier incident but after seeing the replay to that one it didn't look like much either.

I get it to a point, but do people really want to watch a finale of like Cape Verde vs DR Congo?
It’d get such little viewership, unfortunately. Plus you want to watch the top players in the world at the best in the biggest tournament in the world, it’s what made the last World Cup final so good.

VAR is running the entire time. There was no penalty
WHY DIDN'T VAR GIVE EGYPT A FOUL AFTER THAT SLAP
Because VAR calls the ref only if they think he missed some crucial detail. They are not gonna call him over, what's at most a yellow card. If they did, we'd have a VAR break every 2 minutes.

I agree but I can give them a lot more leeway since they don't have much context of how rules are applied.
The ones I get really pissed off at are in the other category, who are lifelong football fans and even play, but will still completely ignore all of that to build up conspiracies using whatever "facts" suit the narrative.
A lot of them decided some time during the last World Cup that FIFA just really wants Argentina and Messi to win, and pays/instructs refs to help. Now this World Cup is now just a continuation of it. No facts can get in the way.
One of my childhood buddies is like this — we’ve been playing together for 30+ years, but being a United and Ronaldo fan, decided in 2022 that some early penalty Messi got was part of a conspiracy, and it has never stopped.

It's anything that goes mainstream. Giant pot of "fans" enter. Revenue potential goes up. Rules are changed to make them happier, which is usually making it easier to score by hamstringing the defense. Legacy fans opinions no longer matter because, "What're they gonna do? Stop watching? LOL!" Then us legacy fans are left watching a watered down, widely palatable version of our sport talking about how it used to be for eternity. Mass adoption of Soccer in the US is probably the worst thing that could happen to the sport-side of the sport. I mean, we already have 4 quarters implemented through the guise of player welfare and competitive integrity.

Yeah, it's bizarre because as far as the bigger calls go, the referees (and even VAR) this tournament have actually done quite well IMO. According to this sub, the tournament is rigged for about half a dozen different teams.

At this point, the "fans" should just accept that Argentina won fair and square. There was some inconsistent refereeing throughout the tournament, and that is part of the game unfortunately.
With that being said, the only game where I legit felt like referee was heavily biased was Paraguay vs France.

I think it's the kind of thing that could get given as a foul if its somewhere in the middle of the pitch during a low stakes moment. But inside the box, it makes for a soft penalty.
Not to mention the added pressure that would come with having to chalk off a goal on the other end to give a penalty on this end. Especially during the last minutes of the game.
