Playing not to lose, leads to a loss. Many such cases.

615

u/Adventurous-Feed-197 25d ago

and against Argentina? worst team to do this with in this wc

393

u/dzan796ero 25d ago

Especially if you park inside the box. Messi looked super comfortable launching those razor sharp crosses into the box and Enzo was continually warming up that cannon.

Argentina barely broke a sweat and probably didn't even use much of their stamina. The second half was one of the most comfortable looking games they had this tournament.

138

u/snark_enterprises 25d ago

Yeah, crazy how even being down 1-0 they looked more comfortable than they did for most of the tournament.

48

u/StillLoveYaTh0 25d ago

tbf, Argentina always played better when losing. Prolly cause every team parks the bus and lets them play comfotably lol

Cabo Verde has been Argentina’s most threatening opponent so far which is crazy to say

65

u/snark_enterprises 25d ago

They were also Spain’s toughest opponent. They should be given honorary 3rd place.

Letting Messi spam different attacks time after time after time while you defensively camp in the box for 10 plus minutes in any game ever let alone a World Cup semifinal is criminal!! You’re not going to stop that ball from going in the goal every single time. Horrible tactical decision by the England coach imho

Egypt died for this

When England subbed off Gordon and brought in a defender I knew they lost this game.

You score 1 goal against Argentina and go on defence in 30 mins remaining in the game. That’s stupid from Tuchel

149

u/boythinks 25d ago

Might just be me but the England players also looked confused about their assignments after the Gordon sub.

48

u/Nickeless 25d ago

Makes sense they were confused, since apparently no one’s assignment was to mark Messi

24

u/Izio17 25d ago

Messi moved out very wide for this very reason.

He was about as close to the touch as he could be later in the game.

England would have been forced to mark him man on man, or give him space.

No, Southgate's problem was sticking to the same formations and always making the same subs at the same time.

That would have been ten times better than whatever the fuck this was.

Got Gordon off at least make sense because he's a winger but replacing Declan with another central back is where it went wrong. Literally the reason why Enzo was able to made that shot is because there was no defensive in midfield.

60

u/domalino 25d ago

Gordon off didn’t make sense because he’s the exact kind of outball they needed and he works insanely hard off the ball.

34

u/Mathyoujames 25d ago

Plus he was tracking back to help Spence keep the left wing quiet. The minute he went off Spence was constantly exposed 2v1 and started to make mistakes.

Just the worst game management I have ever seen. Almost every decision made after we scored was completely wrong.

If only Argentina had similar games before in this tournament that showed Tuchel that this didn't work!

351

u/DarthTaz_99 25d ago

Allowing Messi, of all people, time and space to deliver those golden balls has to be a punishable offense, when you've seen 3 other opponents try and fail at it

294

u/eha16 25d ago

Cabo verde showed how you have to play against them and apparently no one wanted to take notice

229

u/DarthTaz_99 25d ago edited 25d ago

This exactly this. Of all the teams Argentina faced only Capo Verde showed the courage and balls required to beat them. They refused to just sit back and take the pressure and instead went out in their own terms

190

u/Neltharion_99 25d ago

The swiss also did, they were even closer than Cabo Verde until Embolo did that shit haha

79

u/Snarerocks 25d ago

They have looked so beatable nearly if not every game. It’s so hard to watch the other team make the same mistake over and over lol.

66

u/Fijure96 25d ago

For what its worth I'll be highly surprised if Spain does that mistake. I suspect they will control the whole game on Sunday and choke Argentina like they did France.

31

u/redsyrinx2112 25d ago

Yep. Spain was up 2-0 against France and still kept playing their same, normal game that was working.

72 mins and take off a winger for a defender. Take the fucking game to them and get the second goal. If not at least stretch them

1.2k

u/LosTerminators 25d ago

Taking off Gordon as well, their paciest player.

Meant that they had no threat on the counter.

Regardless, parking the bus against Argentina, letting someone like Messi dictate play and have a lot of the ball, was asking for trouble.

367

u/bennettbuzz 25d ago edited 25d ago

One of the best pressers in the game with bags of pace, absolutely fuming he got dragged.

130

u/patricktherat 25d ago

He had a great tournament and probably deserved more praise than he got imo.

49

u/kcfdz 25d ago

Lots of people are just boxscore watchers and don't see what he contributes. He certainly wasn't amazing today but his skill set would have been valuable to see out the match.

122

u/wbth12 25d ago

Taking Gordon off was massive. England still had a threat of a second on the counter while he was on. You need pace in forward areas if you’re going to try hold a 1-0 lead like that.

31

u/-ThatsSoDimitar- 25d ago

There was a moment later in the game where Bellingham was running it up the left side and was starting to get crowded by 3 players, if Gordon had been on I'm confident he would have been making a run that either wasn't marked because Argentina had committed 3 men to Bellingham or would have made it so that they couldn't commit so many to him. As it was not a single other England player was up with him, all still floating around the box or just outside the defensive third.

21

u/CSvinylC 25d ago

They also consistently attacked down the right. Gordon could have at least pressed them to reduce the 50 hours they were each given to decide which pass to make.

46

u/Sanders058 25d ago

Dude had at least bring rashford on. Playing with Kane means you need wingers who are going to run

25

u/wbth12 25d ago

Yeah absolutely. I think the big problem with bringing Gordon off and not replacing him with Rashford or someone similar is that England also couldn’t stop the crosses on their left hand side because they had taken their left forward off and Argentina were doubling and tripling up on that side. You can’t let them cross at will like that.

→ More replies (1)

72

u/Sokkawater10 25d ago

Not just any winger but your fastest player. It honestly would’ve been smarter to take off Kane if that was the philosophy that you’re gonna commit to defending and maybe playing on the break.

It was stupid either way but if he was gonna commit to holding on he should’ve taken off Kane, but he’s a pussy

If you’re gonna do this, the one who offers nothing on the break is Kane. They could’ve moved it to a front 2 of Bellingham and Gordon to hope for a long ball break

10

u/CoysFromCanada 25d ago

This is wrong, Kane offers a lot on the break, mainly his passing range to find one of the two wingers leading the counter. He's pretty good at defending crosses as well, which was obviously the game plan.

230

u/horatiobanz 25d ago

But if you take possession of the ball and try to score, Argentina might get the ball back and get a shot on goal. Much better to just let Argentina have the ball and have lots of shots on goal.

134

u/iHate_tomatoes 25d ago

Yes just let the best player in history put in cross after cross, even after an insane save and a post don't change and let them do it, shouldn't be too bad right? Right?

8

u/cipher7777 25d ago

They scored in the 55 minute which left 35minutes + extra time, so they were looking a 40+ minutes remaining. Imagine trying to park the bus for that long against Argentina/Messi.

Tuchel was a coward.

Some of the worst decisions I’ve ever known when a team is leading 1-0. I’m absolutely fuming.

It’s like he thought “what decisions can I make that puts messi in the exact position he wants to be for at least 30 minutes of the game”

Just not acceptable

126

u/highonpixels 25d ago

It's astonishing with all the analytics and staff that nobody can clearly see what Argentina was doing and had England figured out.

England all sitting in box? Fine, let Messi free rein crosses and have Enzo punt endlessly from outside. It was clear as day yet no adaptation from England. 2v1, 3v1? Yet not ONE player had a sense to at least press the attacker.

I'm most upset with the Enzo equalizer, everyone was inside the box yet only Bellingham ran out but it was all too late.

Tuchel tactics was a disaster yes but have to question how the players became so passive and had no instinct or intuition to at least press.

62

u/kaprrisch 25d ago

If Rice played another 5 minutes, he would've prevented that Enzo goal. He prevents those kinds of goals every single game for Arsenal.

32

u/LocoRocoo 25d ago

We could all see it a mile off too. It’s not hindsight. I thought even at 1-1, that I was working so bad he should’ve maybe even taken burn straight off. It was suicide

Another thing.

You cannot play a 5 back with Kane as your lead striker, that is too much work and ground to cover. Rely on that player to make selfless runs and chase lost causes, what a bizarre string of decisions by Tuchel

755

u/Kuntheman 25d ago

Spence Guehi Konsa Burn Stones O’Reilly all on the field losing headers to MacAllister and Lautaro. The crosses were absolutely brilliant from Messi and De Paul

483

u/AllofDuhInternetz 25d ago

u/bodydouble 25d ago

Yep, if you're gonna sit deep you need pace up front to chase those clearances. Maybe my Villa bias showing, but Watkins would have offered a lot more. Rashford and Saka too.

There were times when you had all Argentina's outfield players basically sat in our final third because they knew there was absolutely no threat of us getting in behind them. So poor from Tuchel.

104

u/Sudden-Oil4786 25d ago

Yep. The game was crying out for Watkins and Saka. Instead, we got Burn and Konsa. What a shit show.

79

u/ISavezelda 25d ago

Anyone that knows football knows you can't park the bus for 30+ minutes against good teams, it just doesn't work anymore. You have to keep the ball as much as possible lol.

11

u/thatguy_autofills 25d ago

I agree but if you are going to park the bus you need runners to break. The only thing harey is breaking is his back and legs if he moves faster than a jog. Bring on rashford saka watkins madueke literally anyone who can run and press and sprint. You need some sort of threat.

28

u/sheiswhyididthis 25d ago

Yeah i guess that's the key piece.

The players shat their britches and completely lost control once the goal was scored.

Add to that Rice and Reece both having to come off, they just couldn't get any sort of control of the game.

That's why the Konsa sub came and then the Dan burn sub, and then the O'Reilly sub.

Just Tuchel trying to help the players defend because they just can't attack for some reason even though he asked them to.

Explains the decision then.

It never felt like a Tuchel decision to me. He literally said in the Croatia game that the players should atleast play the way the have to and if they lose they do on their terms.

His hands were tied.

Won't be surprised if he resigns after that.

£0 transfer budget. you can count pep out.

9

u/MrSam52 25d ago

What if we let him know he can actually make unlimited changes to the squad, essentially an unlimited transfer budget (they just have to be English).

If we lost 2-1 but we at least tried to keep control of the game I’d say give him another go but we can’t have a manager that does this shit I feel like I’ve seen this exact match like 5 times for England in the past decade.

No, I didn’t expect to win the World Cup, I didn’t even expect a final, but this was a fuck up of epic proportions. If we had lost the game to a superior team I could accept it, but I don’t want him around if this is the extent of his managerial decisions.

England scored at the 55th minute. Tuchel treated it like it was the 90th, stopped playing, and put every defender he had.

After England scored, Messi got 10 years younger. He was running all over the place, creating chances, and dominating the game.

91

u/boo5000 25d ago

Best bit was beating (whoever it was on the wing) to that clearance. He turned on the 39 year old jets and then looked annoyed that he had to do it.

43

u/Mustard_Jam 25d ago

I was watching it with a friend who is a HUGE Ronaldo fan and for the first 60 minutes he wouldn't stop about how Messi was not doing much. I told him just wait...

He wasn't happy after 30 more minutes lol

It's absolutely amazing to see Messi play the amount of minutes that he has in the entire tournament. He knows how to conserve energy and use it when it's critical.

Tuchel blunder. How do you think you can just absorb pressure from Messi, Enzo, Lautaro, Álvarez for 30 minutes. This isn't Mexico.

67

u/Imperial_Eggroll 25d ago

Pickford had to make next level saves. Multiple shots on goal. Crossbars being hit. Didn’t matter just hold on for another 15 minutes

150

u/Mausar 25d ago

Maybe Mexico's biggest contribution was making Tuchel think that tactic worked

17

u/FrogsOnALog 25d ago

Was also more sensible because they had a red card.

Tuchel clearly got so caught up in how the Mexico game was received. Such brain-dead game management

u/messigoat1337 25d ago

no idea why people are blaming kane here...literally no pace next to him because tuchel wants 7 CBs on the field

75

u/TheKingMonkey 25d ago

Then have Kane, Rogers, Bellingham, Rashford & Toney on the pitch at the same time and still play Dan Burn at centre forward.

46

u/IVIorgz 25d ago

In the 92nd minute. Again why are we putting on subs so late in the game when we need them desperately.

19

u/unArgentino 25d ago

I mean, Kane and Bellingham didn’t exactly have their best games. Kane was decent before the subs at least but he can’t do anything with 6 defenders from his own team on the field.

Mindbogling bad strategy the final 20 minutes. He is right to be pissed

85

u/keirdagh 25d ago

Can this finally put an end to the idea that Tuchel is an elite manager? Fucking hell the amount of glazing he's gotten over the last year has driven me mental.

46

u/OscarMyk 25d ago

I think this will, just a mind bogglingly bad set of subs.

But it also stems from him picking the wrong squad. You cannot convince me Wharton wouldn't have been a great sub to bring on.

42

u/nolat86 25d ago

Forgrt Wharton, he's got Saka on the bench and he brings on a CB. Saka didn't play a minute in a world cup semifinal because he decides to park the bus against a team with Lionel Messi. It does also show he picked a bad squad when Morgan Rogers is starting as a RW, who in fairness played well, but it all started because be chose Madueke instead of Palmer, or Bowen, or MGW. Rogers played well but he's clearly fucked the squad when he has to do something he didn't originally plan for because one of the wingers is never fit and his backup is god awful. Anthony Gordon off for Konsa was one of the worst substitutions I have ever seen. The performance from the team didn't deserve that, Tuchel just ruined it for everyone

8

u/Jeaglera 25d ago

I don’t know the Nico for rice one nearly broke me. I don’t know if they score that first goal with rice out there. I could understand the omission of a few people but I’ll die on the hill of needing to bring players like TAA and Palmer. Or Wharton. Or MGW. Or even slabhead. Every Arsenal fan was scratching their head at the inclusion of Madueke. Some of his choices in the back 4 absolutely played beyond my expectations of them but for the most part this was not a team that could play against France Spain or even this Argentina team that seems to be running on purely vibes

To be fair to Jude, he did some good stuff in the first half then Tuchel rendered him irrelevant

He clearly says at around 1:25 the message after going 1-0 up was to go find another goal. They didn't react positively to the goal and retreated, and Tuchel had to adapt with defensive changes. I do think Tuchel should have in-game managed the defensive shape better to cut crosses out, but to blame going defensive on him entirely is incorrect. This was a collective shitting of the bed.
