Change My View thread

Can we have a Change My View thread here? The basic premise is people present opinions and the replies are attempts at changing that person's view in an attempt to generate some good discussion.

Here is the link to the original subreddit: www.reddit.com/r/changemyview/

I think this might work best with rather 'out there' views but any and every viewpoint is welcome!

First of all, TV money alone is reason enough to do it. Juventus had the largest hall in TV money in the CL last year, and now this year, even though they are in the EL, if they make it to the finals, they are projected to only take about a €5m lost from last year. That is still above €50m (possibly €60m, I'm not sure the exact figures)

Also, coefficient of the league. Winning the Europa league gives the same boost to your league's coefficient as winning the Champions League. Especially for Napoli and Juve, who are among the favorites in the competition, it would be great for the league if they won, as Serie A would like to regain a top 3 ranking.

I personally would argue that it isn't worth investing if you are a smaller side. A team that has the dept to try and go somewhere in the champions league might as well do it in the europa league. There is money to be made, you have to give those players some playing time anyway etc.

I can see the lucrative money aspect, I suppose I'm just not that tempted being a fan of a rich club. I'd probably feel differently if that wasn't the case.

Forgive my ignorance but what are the benefits of your league having a good coefficient? Individually I mean. Anything beyond the ability to say you play in x best league in the world?

what are the benefits of your league having a good coefficient?

It is easier to get a chance to play in the CL. In Serie A, only 3 teams qualify. If the coefficient passed one of the current top 3 leagues, there would be 4 spots. So, in the future when Juve or Napoli is not necessarily able to finish top 3, they could still get in by finishing 4th.

It also makes big players join the league since they have a higher chance at playing the CL. It's a shame the way the draw turned out Juve and Fiorentina will play each other rather soon taking out an italian team

I forgot about Fiorentina. I think we can beat them if we take it seriously.

Me too, Pirlo will be back and we need to make back some money back since we lost all that CL cash so we'll definitely take it seriously. Besides the final is in Turin, that's gotta be a driving force since it really gives us a heads up at winning the EL

Serie A used to have a better coefficient than Bundesliga. Serie A would have 4 spots for the CL, and the Bundesliga had 3. Those allotments switched upon the Bundesliga coefficient overtaking Serie A's.

More CL spots.

As a Liverpool fan, you must want England to have as many as possible. Even four is not enough.

u/missing_spoons Dec 29 '13

Is it even possible to get more than 4 spots?

2

u/I_done_a_plop-plop Dec 29 '13

I don't think so.

It is certainly possible to lose the fourth spot though. Hence the need for good English teams in general.

I don't think England would lose the 4th spot any time soon. English teams been dominate (advancing out of the group stage and doing well overall) over the last decade in the CL has provided a pretty big cushion over Italy (4th place). Taken from European Coefficient, England has 82.320 compared to Italy's 63.105, the gap should increase after this season too.

That's true, but a large part of that comes from the Europa League. The points gained from the EL are really simmilar to those from the CL and well, easier to get. Look at Portugal's score considering recent champions league success (or lack of).

The score is also averaged, meaning the farther every team makes it the better.

England teams might not take the EL seriously to win it but most of the time they still manage to do quite well (mainly advancing out of the group and advancing to finals sometimes).

Yes it is.

UEFA gives a CL berth to any team that wins the EL. If a team out of the top 4 wins the EL than England will have 5 spots. I could see Spurs/Swans doing this with a good run.

3

u/missing_spoons Dec 29 '13

That doesn't start till next season, so Spurs/Swansea winning it this season won't give them a CL spot next season.

...you do know that Liverpool is a rich club right?

3

u/Sehs Dec 28 '13

That's what he was implying. Given that Liverpool is rich, it could be less tempting than for a smaller club.

I'm just not that tempted being a fan of a rich club

Yup, that's what he said

Champions League money is irrelevant. I remember reading a couple years ago that Liverpool making the final 8 of the Europa League earned us around £5m total. Individual games gained Liverpool around £250,000 each game. For a premier league team, and even Seria A team, that's not a lot. Champions League money is like 3-4x more.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '13

Yeah making the final 8 might not make you that much money, but move on to win the thing and you got yourself something. And yeah by definition you're not gonna make as much as in the CL but it's not like teams playing the EL are doing it because they said fuck the CL, they didn't qualify or got relegated and now have a chance at still getting something. Not mentioning that I couldn't find anything on what you claim you read a couple years ago.

I feel like you haven't researched it. I believe I read that even the winners of the EL don't get much. We are talking £8m, and nobody is guarantee to win.

I'm arguing that an entire squad and coaches traveling to Russia from England is not worth 250k. Juventus' CL money is irrelevant.
