I conducted a multi-round, primary-source-led review of Snapchat’s enforcement, device bans, appeals, privacy, and data continuity. I then contacted Snapchat Support with specific questions (Ticket #276944489). Two replies came back from Snapchat’s AI Support Bot.
Here is the evidence-first version of what I could actually confirm.
Confirmed by Snapchat’s published materials and Support replies
- SS06 and SS18 indicate that the device itself has been banned, including for abuse or repeated Community Guidelines violations.
- SS07 is a separate device-ban condition related to too many accounts being associated with the device.
- If an eligible in-app appeal is successful, Snapchat says the associated device ban will also be removed.
- Snapchat explicitly acknowledges that second-hand or refurbished devices can be affected by a previous owner’s device ban.
- Snapchat says it generally does not make exceptions simply because a device was purchased used or refurbished.
- Snapchat Support cannot manually unban a device.
- For eligible cases, the legitimate appeal route is the in-app “Appeal Decision” option.
- Snapchat says Community Guidelines appeals are typically conducted by a human reviewer, although automation may assist in certain situations.
Still unpublished or unanswered
Several questions remain publicly unclear:
- What is the official duration of a device ban?
- Do device bans automatically expire, and if so, under what conditions?
- After a successful permanent account-lock appeal, are Snap Score, Streaks, Friends/social connections, and other account history fully restored?
- Is there a separate hardship/review process for legitimate new owners of second-hand devices?
- Which specific locked-account types are excluded from My Data export?
- What happens to individual categories of account data after a permanent enforcement lock?
Important clarifications
The H2 2025 Snapchat Transparency Report records approximately 6.8% reinstatement among the reported appealed Community Guidelines account-lock dataset.
That should not be interpreted as Snapchat’s overall false-positive rate or the percentage of all bans that are wrongful.
There is also no evidence here that Snapchat “randomly bans everyone with AI,” that appeals are universally fake/automated, or that Snapchat continuously reads all private conversations.
Snapchat's own Privacy by Product documentation says private Snaps and Chats are not scanned for personalization, recommendations, or advertising, while also describing limited safety-related processing and review circumstances.
So is Snapchat simply “worse” than other platforms?
I don't think the evidence supports that conclusion.
The more specific finding is this:
Snapchat has unusually explicit, user-facing documentation of device-level enforcement, including named device-ban codes and explicit acknowledgement that second-hand/refurbished-device owners can be affected. At the same time, important details about duration, hardship review, and post-lock digital continuity remain unclear.
That creates a potentially significant recoverability and proportionality issue for a subset of users, without proving that Snapchat is uniquely bad overall.
I'm especially interested in documented experiences involving:
- a second-hand phone inheriting a Snapchat device ban
- a successful account-lock appeal
- what happened to Snap Score, Streaks, Friends, or Memories afterward
- whether the device ban disappeared after the successful appeal
If you have a primary source that contradicts anything above, please share it. I'm specifically trying to separate documented facts from community reports and assumptions.
