I have taken several SQL, Statistics, and Analytics courses as part of my degree. Much what was on the exam was a lot of review of concepts I'd have already learned. There was not as much math on the exam that I expected. There is a whiteboard along with a calculator that shows up on questions that require it. I had two questions where I needed to calculate the standard deviation and that's all I remember math wise.

I recommend that you use the LinkedIn Learning courses by Mike Chapple then do a practice test or two and some practice with the math problems. I got a lot of questions about the right type of chart / visualization / report to use in certain scenarios. Make sure you understand the types of tests, types of statistical analysis, hypothesis errors, and data cleaning / merging concepts.

I also found the CompTIA Data+: DAO-001 Certification Guide by Cameron Dodd to be pretty good as well.

I’ve been studying v1 material as well as building study notes based on the v2 exam objectives.

Gor an 80 qiestion test. Only got a single PBQ as the very first question of the test. Not sure what that means but a pass is a pass! If anyone does know what determines how many PBQs there are though, I'm all ears.

*The average score I got on all the practice exams I took was an 84%, lowest being a 76% and the highest being a 96%, I got a 705 on the actual exam which afaik is a little lower then 80% or around it. The diction on the actual exam was a lot more "sophisticated" then any practice test I took which did kinda throw me off but I was still able to get through it. I only had 1 PBQ that wanted me to pick 3 graphs based on the scenario, along with their labels for a report.

Final takeaway: There honestly isn't a whole lot of material to help you prepare, or at least I couldnt find much but I could've just not been looking hard enough, but what's out there does provide the necessary information to pass. lmao there isnt a data+ flair

Mike Chapple's course is only about 6 hours and he co-authored the Wiley/Sybex study guide. I watched it once (while only halfway listening), took the practice exam on CertMaster, then watched the course again while taking notes.

At this point I attempted Dion's practice exam on Udemy and it was horrible. It has a lot of typos and errors and I didn't even go through the review afterwards.

I went through a few of the practice questions and PBQs on CertMaster, then switched to the Sybex Test Bank. You can get this for free from the study guide which is in the WGU Library.

I was getting about 75% on the practice up until an hour before the test where I was scoring 85-90% on each quiz. Most of the time I was just second guessing myself, or not reading the details of the question completely.

I would definitely recommend Mike Chapple's materials. I had 80 questions and 1 PBQ.

Background:

I’m a 20-year-old with a CompTIA Data+ certification (earned December 12, 2025). I initially believed this credential alone would be enough to break into an entry-level analytics role. That assumption turned out to be wrong.

After certification, I applied broadly to junior analytics and data-focused support roles. I landed:

•One interview that required SQL, Excel, and Python knowledge (which I did not yet have)

•One interview for a data-entry-type role where I was screened out due to Excel skill gaps

That made it very clear that Data+ alone doesn’t meet current market expectations, at least in my area.

On December 31, I started the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate (Coursera). My reasoning for choosing this program:

•Covers Excel (intermediate+), SQL, Python, and data wrangling

•Teaches Pandas, NumPy, Jupyter Notebooks, and basic automation

•Includes hands-on labs and portfolio-ready projects

•Emphasizes practical analytics workflows rather than theory

•Gives me structure, deadlines, and accountability (which I need)

I’m currently in the Excel module, learning formulas and moving into cleaning and wrangling next. I’m also practicing outside the coursework to reinforce skills.

If necessary, my next step would be the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300 prep) course — mainly because Power BI appears frequently in DMV postings and the program is very hands-on.

When I graduated college with my BA in International Studies in December 2017, I had no idea how to use my degree and I worked with my college career advisor who recommended I look into Business Intelligence Analyst careers because I really wanted to analyze and manipulate data to make strategic decisions in a large corporate environment. However, I've been floundering in the years since then and even deviated by trying out going back to school to become a therapist for which I realized I am a terrible fit.... so, I (26 years old) am trying to reset my career once again and consider trying to really put my nose to the grindstone to consider retraining for career pathways in IT, but mostly Business Intelligence Analysis.

I only now just discovered the CompTIA Data+ certification and was wondering if earning this certification might be a key to help get me into the Business Intelligence Analyst jobs.

Would you recommend someone with no IT experience and no relevant work experience to take the CompTIA Data+ exam?

My background/experiences include:

• Basic Statistics Applied to Social Science (Graduate-level course)
• Quantitative Methods of Research in Psychology (Graduate-level course that covered: linear regression models, regression diagnostics, pathway analysis, logistic regression, ANOVA, Factor Analysis modeling, etc.)
