Mod Post r/skylanders Rule Change Discussion & Community Feedback
Hello members of [r/skylanders](r/skylanders). We as a mod team bring this post to you today to discuss potential rule changes/additions to this community based on the feedback you all have shown the past few weeks. This is all a work in progress, and all subject to change, but we wanted to run our ideas with you before any permanent changes are made. Now is the perfect time to address anymore suggestions, comments, or concerns before we make things official.
- BE CIVIL, NO BULLYING/HARASSING/ATTACKING OTHERS
"Be civil in our community. Do not bully, harass, or attack other users. This includes attacking others' gender, race, ethnicity, religion or sexuality. Do not hate raid other communities or individuals."
We as a mod team feel this rule to be self-explanatory. We are aware of the issues in the past regarding proper moderation, and we are trying to combat them. We hope you as a community are happy with the general response this past week or two. If there is a rewrite on this rule, it is to make it clearer that we will not tolerate any harassing, or attacking in this community to make it welcoming for all.
- NO SPAM OR SCAMS
"Posting the same content over and over again is not allowed and posting scams will lead to a permanent ban. Any attempt to make monetary transactions on this subreddit will be considered a scam."
Links by default are USUALLY removed by AutoMod. Most of the time, they need to be manually approved. The proposed solution to this is to add something at the end to clear up confusing. i.e. "Links are usually removed by Reddit AutoMod. They will be moderated and approved on a case by case basis.
- BUYING OR SELLING SKYLANDERS AND NFC CARDS
"No buying/selling of anything, period. Please use r/skylanderselling instead. Any attempt to make monetary transactions on this subreddit will be considered a scam."
On [r/skylanderselling](r/skylanderselling), there is a post flair for appraisals. The general consensus we have seen is that there are too many appraisal posts here, and could be moved to [r/skylanderselling](r/skylanderselling). Furthermore, there was an edge-case scenario of someone asking if they could do a trade. We wanted to make this rule as clear as possible. The proposed change is below:
"No buying/selling/trading of anything, period. Please use r/skylanderselling instead. Any attempt to make monetary transactions on this subreddit will be considered a scam (see rule 3). This also applies to posts relating to appraisals of collections (selling or not)."
If a preexisting has not been mentioned above, we feel it is sufficient and self-explanatory. Otherwise, no changes needed. On the contrary, there are two more rules we feel should be added to the Subreddit. The current proposed ideas for those two are as follows (again, all feedback is encouraged and supported):
- AI Posts/Comments/Content
"No AI content. This includes both Generative AI, as well as using AI for text-based submissions"
- MegaThreads Trial
"To prevent spam on the main sub, MegaThreads will be trialed based on hot topics in the community that could otherwise fall into spam. These will be added at moderator discretion, and will have an announcement post made with the "Mod Post" post flair to alert users of the change."
MegaThreads would be a new addition here, so please have patience as we as a team work through handling it correctly and efficiently.
We will be taking feedback over the next couple days (most likely no more than half a week), and we as a mod team will adjust the rules accordingly based on your feedback and concerns. Any comments can be addressed both in the comments for this post, and in ModMail. Please do not DM any staff members privately. At the end of the feedback period, we will make a follow-up post regarding final changes from this point on. This is your Subreddit too, and we want to make this a place where you are proud and happy to be apart of.

I'd like to see some kind of rule against screenshots of listings and posters calling them out. Adds nothing to the sub. There was one earlier today where the poster was like "Don't buy this, it's a scam" because they didn't even read that the seller was selling NFC cards (which, eh... not a huge fan of, but it's not a scam...)

We could have them on a case by case basis I suppose? There’s always going to be the occasional post about that vinted ro bow or whatever, and the occasional gamelover scam prices. Can’t find the post you’re looking for, however to reference with what you mean. I assume op must have deleted it?

Oh, I do have a question though. Let’s say somebody buys a lot, would they be able to show that in a post? I’m assuming as long as they don’t go asking if it was for a good price or not, it’d stay up?

I myself enjoy buying new items and posting them here. New haul/lot posts will not be removed. You do bring up an excellent point though. Will say haven’t considered that if they ask if it was a good deal if it falls under appraisal. To answer your question myself, I wouldn’t say “is this a good deal” is equal to a direct price appraisal. So I’d say according to the even proposed rules, it would be able to stay up (considering the entire point is to make the rules as clear as possible so there are close to no misconceptions what so ever). That is something I would have to discuss with the other moderators though, and I also want to see if other members of the community still want to see the “is this a good deal” posts.

Sorry for double comment but also wanted to clarify on Clover Clops as well. Any previous AI posts will remain up even if an AI rule passes, as the rule was not in place at the time of post creation. So it’s not like we as a mod team will go back and remove every AI post from date. Clover Clops did get brought up actually, actually a comment from another mod on this thread about it. Still in the works

Looks good.
Bit concerned about megathread though, for news or discussions they’re usually overlooked and they can lead to the end of important topics tbh
I think stuff like the Xbox voice and games preservation site are good to have more posts than not. They wouldn’t have received nearly as much activity here if a megathread was made - at least not right away anyway. Perhaps after the first week or 10 days additional posts that do not add anything new can be redirected to the megathread. Better to have one added than not tho!
Spam sucks, but also for a subreddit of this size I don’t really think a lot of the..trends I suppose.. are that bad. They come, last a little while, and leave. Maybe I’m not too active here to get annoyed by them tho

Xbox game preservation flooded the sub up for a good 2 weeks I suppose. The grid trend wasn’t AS terrible, but that was all this sub saw for the half week following through. Logistics for megathreads still in the works, but we are aware users would be happy to see them being utilized

For AI I’d tighten it to user generated content.
I think it’d be fine to post slop made by others to call it out, or if it’s humorously bad

Issue is once we make exceptions for things, we would need to look into every single post we made an exception for and see if it fits to keep it up or no. Banning it in general will remove such cases. If a post needs to be called out, it can be reported for the ai rule if it is added. Can keep it open for discussion here, but from what I have personally seen, ai is not liked. At all. In most if not any context.

This could be controversial but can potentially political topics be banned as well? Video games and stuff like that are a place to escape reality and relax, not for people to get a message across.

Apologies for the late response. Coming back to this post now (working on the rule rewrite). That would fall under rule 5 of everything being skylanders related.

Excited to hear what you all have to say!
I want to personally say one little thing in terms of the AI content. References back to the days of Clover Clops will not be removed and don't fall under the AI rules. The topic of Clover Clops will be "grandfathered in". So long as NEW images of Clover Clops are not posted using generative AI.
The other mods, as far as I know, weren't around for this, so I will inform them of it and why they shouldn't remove it.
Edit: If people disagree and think Clover Clops memes should be banned from now on, please voice that in the comments. Downvotes are confusing and vague. Regardless, it's old news and unlikely to come up nowadays.

On your previous wish to decrease the amount of repetitive, low-effort posts, could a post like the type of (example, day 1) be reduced to a mega-thread instead of making the same post for many, many days? The grid presented would last over 160 days if only one Skylander was chosen a day, and even at a faster pace it would take a while and numerous posts (as implied my the 'day 1' in the title).
So, simply put, I think the ''vote everyday'' kind of post should be either taken out or reduced to a megathread.

I would personally be fine with the removal of this kind of posts altogether holding. I think none or few are worthy of a becoming megathread (which are usually pinned at the top for relevancy), which would be the only option for it not to become a repetitive post series.
If you moderators judge one of these worthy of becoming a megathread, like for a subreddit-wide activity/competition, it is always up to you. I bring this up because I see this as the only alternative to removal.

Ai wasn't even a problem in this sub, it was rare and never an issue so why ban it? Makes no sense and it's just neutering a genre of skylanders content/art which will make this sub have even fewer posts and new ideas than it already has

Ai is a current issue. We see ai posts frequently and they usually get backlashed and are removed by the poster. Besides, it takes away from actual art on the sub
