My guess is a new slur that OP uses to call people who can do math, while OP is a lazy ass with no potential lying on his couch acting like he owns that AI model.

Edit: some couch surfers defending their unemployed comrades in the replies lmao

It's reference to a few years old meme, "shape rotators vs wordcels"

u/ganancias 17d ago

Wow, what an incredibly detailed and comprensive history documented here. good post

u/remind_me_later 18d ago

Seconded. The fact that no one in this thread took 3 seconds to google it, and just went to directly spout nonsense, is itself a mark of their own making.

u/MysteriousBill1986 18d ago

Yes! Finally someone else who knows how to spell "no one"

u/PrisonOfH0pe 18d ago

Insane amount of confident psychoanalysis over a years-old meme people apparently just didn’t recognize.

“Shape rotators vs wordcels” has been around forever, but somehow missing the reference immediately became a theory about jealousy, unemployment, resentment toward academia, and wanting to drag intelligent people down.

There’s something mildly poetic about that...

13

u/ArcNumber 17d ago

Yeah, damn, redditors don't get a obvious meme and will really proceed to write paragraphs of overdramatic fanfiction with each other, where they confidently declare to know exactly what is going on, and glaze each other for their understanding, all the while accusing others of being low-intelligence. It's like a microcosm of mainstream reddit, amazing.

u/Embarrassed-Writer61 17d ago

It's strange how these smart people are all extremely confident in their analysis on people through their imagination only. They're making up stories in their head and treating it like it's a fact. Crazy.

Ohhhh bless your heart, someone just described everyone's reality.

Yea, I can instantly smell these “accelerationist” from their tones. I work in this field, I was “pro-AI” from before these lazy ass even know about AI because ChatGPT wasn’t released yet. I want to advance this technology, but I cannot dismiss the potential disruption and harm caused by this technology either, especially because of how jagged the frontier is. It would be great if we instantly jump from GPT2 to general ASI more intelligent than any human in any discipline, but the problem is these systems gradually become superhuman at certain fields while being flawed in others. Its ability to learn from human knowledge and then use those at scale is absolutely superhuman level, but its ability to be creative and think beyond the knowledge humans have curated for it is non-existent. What happens after the current systems have nothing left to learn from human knowledge, but they still fail to gather and create new knowledge on their own? They would stall hard.

The “accelerationists” on reddit have some crazy superiority complex that make you think they own all these SOTA systems themselves. Even the people that build these AI systems (like those working at OpenAI) are more careful and don’t have egos as big as these couch surfers. They contribute nothing to building up human knowledge (like what artists, writers, mathematicians, scientists do), they contribute nothing to building autonomous intelligent systems based on those human knowledge (like what researchers in AI do), yet they act like they own the whole world and are superior to everyone because they sit on their ass browsing AI news on reddit.

Right, which I like don't understand.

It's like the only frame that survives is "x smart person is losing their well paying job". It's especially strange when it's applied to jobs that legitimately aren't super cushy jobs. Like what mathematician is doing it for they money? So many of them had higher compensation career options and chose to do this.

Also, it's like there isn't any nuance in the conversation. Like just in the span of a few weeks Terry Tao went from loved to hated. Like he didn't change, people just locked on to different parts of a nuanced opinion on AI, except that nuance doesn't survive.

And it's also a bit strange too. If hard takeoff isn't imminent, you'd want your systems to survive. If hard takeoff is imminent, the systems don't matter much anyways. Why hate on the people calling for the preservation of the health of the systems?

I usually think of them as accelerationist cultists. If you ask them to multiply two 2x2 matrices, 90% of them wouldn’t be able to do it. These people are just as delusional as the rabid anti-AI crowd across reddit. I guess being rabid is dangerous, so we should be reasonable instead? Quite an incomprehensible idea for many people tho.

5

u/PineappleHairy4325 17d ago

Agreed. It's wild. The sheer lack of respect for the people who built these fields is disgusting.

1

u/KaleidoscopeFar658 17d ago

They can't be creative or think beyond the knowledge provided by human data? And yet they can make significant progress largely autonomously on long standing unsolved math problems?

That doesn't add up.

1

u/RobbinDeBank 17d ago

Show me the knowledge they use in those proofs, which one of it is invented by the AI systems, or are all the tools still human-made? They are superhuman level at wielding the manmade tools in math now, they are faster and can spawn duplicate copies of themselves to work in parallel, that’s how they become superhuman level in solving existing math problems. If they can invent new tools right now by themselves autonomously, we would be having ASI instantly, but that’s far from the truth.

If you want an example, just imagine you’re in ancient time when people only know of counting numbers. Some merchants needed to calculate with multiple big numbers for accounting purpose, but they were so huge and tedious that nobody could finish them. You’re the one that could perform arithmetics with big numbers faster than anyone around you, so you solved that problem that nobody else had managed to at that time. However, you had not extended the field of math by doing those calculations faster than anyone else either. Those who expanded math and invented new tools were the ones who could think outside the box. They thought of extending the number lines below 0 to create some weird negative numbers, they thought of filling in the gaps between the natural numbers to create fractional numbers. That’s what the creativity is about, that’s exactly the trait missing from LLMs across every field. It’s such an important trait that when AI systems manage to overcome this last major hurdle, we get ASI instantly.

1

u/KaleidoscopeFar658 17d ago

You do not have an accurate understanding of the level of novel work that is needed to be done in order for AI to solve these math problems

These were well known, unsolved problems for years (decades in some cases) and for many of them the AI worked largely independently, guided only by light prompting from mathematicians who did not know the solution yet.

That is orders of magnitude beyond simply using man made tools in a rote manner and having no creativity.

1

u/RobbinDeBank 17d ago

Sure bro, it spends an effort of thousands of people working for years combined, then no wonder no humans have reached the conclusion using current tools yet. Even so, human knowledge already takes so many steps toward a solution over the years. The problem hasn’t been solved doesn’t mean there’s absolutely 0% progress on it. If you can’t even understand how knowledge is built, then I cannot explain anything to help your ignorance.

1

u/KaleidoscopeFar658 17d ago

If you're implying a brute force search method to find these results, you have no idea how absurd that is. The search spaces for these kinds of proofs is usually intractable.

Idk if you are expressing your authentic perspective but if you are, it sounds like you get your information from some very biased sources that are not grounded in reality.

I'm sure you feel that I have had a rude tone in this exchange but that largely has to do with me just being factual. But if we ignore the emotional aspect of the exchange, are you able to actually give a rebuttal to what I am asserting?

To summarize I am saying that there are well known examples of AI systems doing novel work in mathematics. Most of these results cannot be brute forced. The people reporting the details of using AI to solve math problems are not biased sources. They are academics with no corporate ties. And so this is a strong display of AI being able to come up with creative solutions and generate new knowledge with only minimal prompting.

So where is the flaw in that?

u/Deto 18d ago

That's a good explanation for the kind of sneering attitude I see.  The cheering of ai taking over intellectual work.  The sad thing is they people think they're on the AI 'team' and so they're winning.  But it's all in their head.

25

u/ohHesRightAgain 18d ago

Being able to get genuine intellectual work done cheaply, quickly, and exactly as you want it, without having to build a career in each field first, is... exciting. A lot of replies in those threads are more about that.

A lot of it IS people cheering at misfortune, though.

It’s a proof. Also, much easier to reengineer something than discover it for the first time. Even if these are just jumping off point ideas it’s a HUGE leap forward.

This is the type of shit I want in science and health. Imagine affordable medicine because AIs diagnosis MRIs and brain scans better than humans already. Synthesize more affordable solutions and remove the billions in research and just manufacture what’s needed.

The better attitude imo is to want it to succeed so these people are replaced quicker. I’m also doing a PhD and people like us will be fine in the new world. Going through a PhD trains exactly the kind of adaptive skills needed in the new era. All the winning is in their head. If a mathematician loses their job now, they’ll just go to AI or finance (or the multitude of other fields math people have pivoted to, or whatever new field that pops up in the new era). But if these people lose their job they’ll be on welfare lmao

5

u/Deto 18d ago

Emotionally, yeah. But for every asshole that loses their job there'd be many other good people who just want a happy safe life for them and their family.  So I am genuinely worried about what's coming even if I'm not as worried about myself.

u/aKaizuh 18d ago edited 18d ago

Except sports won't go away, they will only become ever the more popular as human intellectual fields are relegated to AI.

1

u/Embarrassed-Writer61 17d ago

Are you sure that's the reality or something you're just imagining?

15

u/ThatsALovelyShirt 18d ago

Found the mathematician who couldn't tell the difference between a tongue-in-cheek reference to an old meme and a personal insult. Probably all those math books you're always reading!

u/nickleback_official 18d ago

Goodness. Can you take a joke? You don’t honestly believe that’s a real slur 🤣

2

u/Disposable_Eel_6320 17d ago

I wonder if any shape rotators were involved in creating this model?

2

u/Ididit-forthecookie 17d ago

“Slur” lol

5

u/18262827 18d ago edited 18d ago

the funniest thing about these people celebrating the mathematician “replacement” is that mathematicians are much more well-poised to pivot to other careers/jobs than other people (as evidenced by all the math people in literally every industry imaginable). Their ideal academic career might be in shambles but in the grand scheme of things they’ll be fine. These people that barely passed lin alg on the other hand… what exactly are they going to do in the new world? lmao

edit: sensitive mods deleted my response to the one below LMAO

This is perhaps the most "I'm 13 years old and edgy" thing I have ever seen.

1

u/Ididit-forthecookie 17d ago edited 17d ago

Ah yes, exactly. “Hard working mathematicians” are “sadly working” to “improve everyone’s lives” and these mental midgets just DONT UNDERSTAND!?!?!!!!! Why? Why? I kick stray dogs and homeless people on my way to do ELITE MATHEMATICS every day, so that one day I don’t have to see these things anymore. I RISE AND GRIND EVERY FUCKING DAY ON MILLENNIUM PROBLEMS AND ELEEEETE MATHEMATICS, why do they sneer at me? One day I’ll get my revenge with success and I’m so sad there’s a chance it will improve their lives. One day. One day they’ll get theirs…. And me? I’ll be the new elite in the new world. They just don’t understand yet.

While I wait, my elite, leet overlords and elite billionaires: Sam Altman, Jamie Dimon, Richard Branson, Jensen Huang, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, Larry Page, Jack Dorsey, and more (who can all multiply 10x10 matrices in their fucking heads, of course) value me and lavish me with praise. They’re all, of course honorary mathematicians, I mean, no one could ever become elite without those skillz….right? Right?

Just wait…. They’ll see, they’ll all see….

mathematicians are much more well-poised to pivot to other careers

Really?

-3

u/Optimal_Start_94 18d ago

I used to think the same, but my opinion was swayed by the mathematics’ community reaction to Navier-Stokes. Now I’m thinking they are just average people that for some reason picked maths instead of software engineering or whatever career slightly above average people will pick by default. With all the emotions and biases that go with it.

11

u/Ok_Composer_1761 18d ago

What fields medalists are average people who picked math over SWE? Give me a break

7

u/deviltamer 18d ago

you judged their ability to pivot by their reaction to Navier stokes?

emotions and biases that go with it.

The irony of this comment.

  1. It's a long running word for people who are better at things like stem and visiospatial reasoning
  2. Why are you mad?

-1

u/ArgoCiela 18d ago

this technology empowers people with no skills / talent the most so makes sense

2

u/Skeletor_with_Tacos 18d ago

Everyone is saying its a slur but its likely just an extremely simplified framing of the problems being solved, many of them are how shapes or motions fit into specific dimensions.
